View Full Version : BAD DAY

First my work calls me when I get home to tell me that they're going to cut me down a days work, i work 50 hours a week. I just got health insurance through them and the only reason i got it was because i had those extra 10 hours,it was the only way i could afford it. i don't get paid much as it is ($330 a week with the extra 10 hours to probably a little over $200 when i drop to 40!) and the insurance is $100 A WEEK from my check. so now it looks like i'll have to cancel it only a month after getting it. on top of the insurance issue, its also the start of the holiday season and my husband starts chemo nov. 19 so i'm sure he'll be taking a lot of sick days. this is so the wrong time for this!
and to top it all off my laptops power cord shorted out and its $104 for a new one!

That's pretty low for them to tell you over the phone like that instead of to your face. I really hope things get better for you. I know im feeling the pinch too. I can't even afford health insurance either, I only have coverage for my son. Times are tough. Just try to stay positive.

Man I feel for you guys with the health insurance thing. Right now, I don't have the extended benefits you get with work, but at least I still have emergency and hospital coverage.
You can call it what you like, but I hope Obama can do something for the healthcare in the U.S. and make it more like Canada's. We don't cover everything (prescription drugs, etc.) but hospitalization and surgery is always covered (unless it cosmetic).
Hopefully the chemo won't hit your hubby to hard this time around. Each treatment can be a little different.
I think you're going to see more and more companies cutting back like yours. It's the jobs "on the edge" like that, that are going to be hit the hardest. :(

I really hope that Obama will come through with his whole "health insurance for everyone" thing too, that would be great.

Honestly, I just don't understand why the U.S. has never adopted that already. They easily could do it. It's mostly run by the provinces (the equivalent to your states). Sure, our taxes are a little higher, but when you're struggling and get ill, the LAST stress you need is how am I going to pay for all this. Or worse, going bankrupt. Just think of it as contributing a bit to an insurance fund each year rather than getting hit at one time with a $100,000 medical bill.
Contrary to what a lot of conservatives think, Canada is just as capitalistic as the U.S., but some areas are more socialized - not totally socialist. There's a huge difference. Sorry - I know I'm going a bit off topic here, but it's always bothered me. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to get injured or sick and have to question whether a trip to the hospital was "worth it" or not.
Why so many republicans are against that I'll never understand. Even our conservative government is totally for it. It just makes sense.

I have done that, where your sick but you really don't want to spend $150 or whatever it might be just to see the doctor. It's not a good feeling.

And dangerous too - think if things were really tight. You're stressed already. Then you get some chest pains - maybe some nausea with it. You don't go to the hospital because it's going to cost a fortune in ECGs, etc.. Two weeks later you take "the big one" and it could have been prevented with emergency bipass surgery. (That actually DID happen to my father, but it wasn't because he couldn't afford the ER trip - he was just stubborn).
It evens out financially in the end sometimes for the government - people don't let things go as far so diseases are caught earlier and treatment is cheaper and easier for all involved.

A friend of mine also put off going to the doctor. She was having bad pains in her legs but she refused to go to the doctor. Finally she went and they found out she had bone marrow cancer. If she only would have gone in sooner as soon as the pain started in her legs they could have caught it in time before it spread. I miss her so much. She passed away a few years ago. :(

Exactly. Drives me nuts when people refuse to go to the doctor - but in the U.S. I can definitely see it - I know I'd probably be on death's door before I went.
Our annual physicals are all totally free and they encourage you to go. Actually, that said, I should make an appt. myself. There's a lot to be said for preventative medicine. Look at Tara's thread today even. I hoped she hasn't waited for a while either. :(

I was surprised to see this old thread resurrected. Thank you for thinking of me Monika, you're so sweet. I love that pic of Sam by the way. I have it in a book, only its b/w and was actually going to scan it and send it to you to use for an avatar but you beat me to it, yours is much better anyway being in color and all. Bewitched is on my XMas list - seasons 2-5 (don't like 2nd Darrin) Anyway, for starters, just a few weeks after starting this thread they gave me my extra overtime day back. Although I was upset at first, I was starting to enjoy Sundays off but am glad I'm back as times are rough out there and extra money never hurts. My husband is having his 4th chemo tomorrow and then after that just 2 more to go! Aside from being exhausted and irritable, hes tolerated it pretty well and has missed few days of work. We're looking forward to the new year as he'll be starting it off in good health with his treatment over. However, he hasn't quit smoking yet, although he's tried cutting down on how much he smokes and went from smoking regular Marlboros to this type called Marlboro 72's which are very short cigs. And as far as the laptop cord goes, my husband bought me a new one 2 days later. All and all, I can't complain too much. Although, it was a rollercoaster ride of a year, its closing out as a happy one. We spent more than half of the year in debt until we were luckily bailed out just before the economy turned sour, gas prices went up and then down, my husbands cancer came back but is still non-aggressive and he now has preventitive treatment under his belt (no pun intended), I went from having no health insurance to having my first doctors appointment (Dec. 22) in probably 10 years, and best of all I went from being an SO lurker to having the courage to become an active poster and have met the most wonderful, thoughtful, inspiring, intriguing, kindest and dearest people. I really feel that I've started some true friendships on this board and hope they will grow in the new year. Thank you for all the inspirational and encouraging words you sent me throughout the year, Monika. I really did take it all to heart and most times it was all that made my day to see a reply from you and know someone was thinking of me. All the love in the world, Kimberlee

Tripper, the reason why so many Republicans here in the US are so against it is because the Republicans are the party of big business - and health insurance companies have deep pockets when it comes to such things as campaign contributions and lobbyists. Why mess up their gravy train while millions go suffering is the GOP's logic.
Either way, Punky, hang in there and try to stay positive! I know it's hard - no one's job (or future) is safe at this point - even once powerful corporations and store chains are now either on the brink of going under or are already gone. I hope everything goes well with your husband's chemo this time around - all the best from me to you! :D

 Hey Monika -as always I love your avatar! I haven't been as active lately on here, I've been lurking but not posting as much, its nothing that happened or anything like that, just taking a little break - although I didn't feel the need to announce it (although I guess I am now) because A. I'm not really a prominent member and B. I'm not sure of how long a break it really is - it'd be silly to announce it and then come back 3 days later. Its not that I don't have the time, its just I lack the enthusiasm at the moment. Sometimes I just feel I have nothing to offer lol can you say self esteem issues. Anyway it might have to do with having the post-holiday blues. Not that the holidays were that enjoyable for me anyway this year, but nonetheless January is a blah month and after the 3 months of the build up toward xmas (oct-dec) after its over theres nothing but a long winter to look forward to.
Anyway, my husband had his final chemo last week (YAY!) - glad thats over and hopefully there will be no recurrence in his April checkup although he has yet to stop smoking. Although we spent most of the weekend arguing (over me lighting candles again! ) And my finacial worries are still haunting me. I admit the last time around I was the big spender but I have really become a minimalist since getting out of that mess in August. However my husband has run our paypal account up to a $1000 buying fishing equipment off ebay and has put almost $2000 on our credit card (it only has a $5000 limit) and now i'm terrified we're going to be in the same predicament again! He keeps assuring me hes going to pay most of it off in the next 2 months by making 2 big payments but yet I keep seeing new charges!
And lately my job has been really bothering me. Its become a chore to go to work. My body can't take third shift much longer. Third shift is so boring at the homeless shelter and the novelty of staying up all night has worn off. Its so hard for me not to call out every day, I have 2 weeks vacation every year but have never taken it but I'm strongly considering doing so because I'm burning out . I can't wait for fall - I know the year has just begun but fall is when I will be taking classes to become an emt and get out of this dead end job. And my husband's soc. sec. doubles in the fall so I'll have less financial worries.
For the most part though I can't complain even though I just did  . I hope everything is alright with you sweetie and thank you for always checking up on me :bighug:

It's good to hear from you Kimberlee. Don't ever think you're not an important poster here.
I know what you mean though. The holidays sucked, but now it seems even worse. The real winter depression has set in for me now too.
I started chemo last week. It's been rough because of all the snowfall we've had and none of the males that have been chatting me up in the neighbour have offered to shovel my driveway for me. One actually stands there and wants to talk while I'm doing it! They even all know what I'm going through. Incredible! Anyway, I went out to shovel last week and slipped on the ice. Fell hard on my hip and my head hit the pavement. I also pulled all the muscles on the right side of my back in the fall. I just have NO strength left to do anything.
My employment insurance runs out in two weeks and I'm no closer to finding a job than I was 4 months ago. There's just NOTHING out there right now. I'll have to dip into my life savings (which isn't much).
Seems like 2008 was a really lousy year for a lot of people and of course, it's dragging over to this year.
I just feel like hiding under the covers for the rest of the winter. ugh!
Hang in there Sweety.

oh cathie:bighug: i'm so sorry to hear everything you're going through. men.... . (no offense to the good men) if i were there i would shovel your driveway for you sweetie, thats for sure. some people are so insensitive. that story reminds me of my 2 male cousins who lived right down the street from my elderly grandfather and had a truck with a plow on it yet neveer came over, so i this little teenage girl at the time would take a bus there and shovel it for him. yet they had no problem showing up when he was going to pay for their dinners (that was the only way he could get them to take him out to eat)
i'm so sorry you were injured...especially hitting your head! i just want you to know you're in my prayers cathie and please take care of yourself. don't sweat the small stuff right now, just focus on you sweetie. i know that sounds like a bunch of fluff but its necessary to stay well. things will work themselves out in the end. God is watching over you sweetie and he will take care of you.

I'm really sorry that your job is doing that to I would think they would talk to you there in the bosses office exc, to explain to you why they are doing this to you.
But I understand where you're coming from with the Insurance that's not cheap. But i really do hope thing's get better for you down the road, just talk to you're boss just say you really need the extra hours of working so you can keep your insurance, see if he/she will understand. But you have my thoughts and prayers with you.

That's actually a very good idea Holly. Often, even though you think they know, bosses haven't a clue what's going on in their employee's lives (especially if it's retail / parttime, etc.). If you're a good worker and he/she likes you, you'd be surprised what they'll do for you if they can.
Heck, I found out the day I got laid off that had my company known I had a brain tumour, they would have kept me on and put me on short-term disability instead. Meanwhile, I kept it a secret from them because I was afraid of the opposite (what ended up happening anyway). Give it a shot - you've got nothing to lose. And now that your husband's through with his treatments, maybe it'll do you both good to spend a bit more time apart. The stress can put more stress on a relationship for sure.
And thanks Kimberlee and Monika for your sweet words of encouragement.
And yeah, I don't want to man bash here, but guys....if you really want to impress that girl...forget the gym....forget the top executive job....grab a #$@%&%* vacuum cleaner or a snow shovel and show us what you can do with THAT!! ;)
