Anthony LaPaglia was injured by an explosion during filming of the political thriller Balibo, in Darwin.

LaPaglia was hurt when an explosive device designed to simulate a gunshot discharged into his arm.

Shooting for the film at Darwin's Stokes Hill Wharf was halted as LaPaglia was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment,, the Northern Territory News reported today.

The incident happened in July.

Balibo recreates the events surrounding the shooting of Australian newsmen Brian Peters, Greg Shackleton, Gary Cunningham, Malcolm Rennie and Tony Stewart in the East Timorese border town of Balibo during the Indonesian invasion.

LaPaglia, the star of US TV series Without a Trace, plays Roger East, an Australian reporter who attempts to discover the fate of the five journalists who were deliberately killed by Indonesian troops.

A source told the NT News the explosives accident happened during filming of the scene in which LaPaglia's character is shot and killed.

"It was the scene where East was going to get shot," the source told the paper.

"They put the explosives on back-to-front."

Rather than exploding outwards, giving the appearance of a gunshot, the device exploded into the star's arm.

Producer John Maynard played down the incident, telling the paper it was a "tiny thing".

"It was only a scratch," he said. "It didn't stop us from working."

Balibo is scheduled for release mid next year.
