Okay, here goes nothing. I love writing but I've never even attempted a fanfic before, so please show mercy!
** 1983 **
Pacing back and forth on the floor of her room, Jinny Exstead was consumed with feelings of fear and anxiety. She had never felt so nervous in her entire 17 years of life. The Exstead house was empty that night--her father, John Sr. was at work; her younger brother Kasey was at a friend's house; and her older brother John Jr. was out at Richard Moffat's party. The same party she had been invited to, the same party she had been looking forward to all week, and the same party that was now going on without her. There was no sound except the grandfather clock ticking monotonously down the hall: tick-tock-tick-tock. The noise made her even more nervous as thoughts flooded her head. Thoughts about graduation, her plans for college, her life. She wanted more than anything to become a cop, and now that might be ruined. The phone ringing in the kitchen snapped Jinny back to attention. She didn't feel like talking to anyone right now, and she tried to ignore the phone. Finally after seven rings it stopped, and she breathed a sigh of relief. Jinny looked down at her watch and took in a deep breath. It was time. She slowly made her way through the dark house and into the bathroom. The same bathroom in which her mother had killed herself almost 3 years earlier. But she barely took notice, as her numbed brain was transfixed on her current situation. When she reached the counter and touched what she had come for, she closed her eyes and said a silent prayer to God to save her from what she knew was coming. With shaky fingers, she hesitantly picked up the piece of plastic on the counter and forced herself to look at it. 'Oh G-d,' she managed to whisper. 17-year old Jinny Exstead was pregnant.
Honestly--should I continue?

"And that, my friend, is how you catch a robber!" Jinny Exstead concluded matter-of-factly, as she and her partner Magda Ramirez walked into the locker room at the SFPD headquarters. Magda gave another laugh in Jinny's direction as she headed for the bathroom stall. "Tell me again, Jin," she said as she closed the stall door, "how many times did you karate chop this guy?"
"Enough so that he begged for mercy like a little baby." This time Jinny laughed herself as she recalled the night's earlier events. Adrenaline was still pumping through her body from her spectacular fight with the unfortunate robber. It had been a while since she'd responded to a robbery call, but she happened to be driving two streets away from where it was happening. Magda had been off duty so she was catching all the details now. Jinny was getting a water bottle out of her locker when she heard the toilet flush. Startled, she quickly shoved the bottle back into the locker as Magda opened the bathroom door. "So," began Jinny, not wanting to sound flushed, "What's the story on Alfred Hancock?" She was referring to CD's and Angela's current case. Magda smiled at this question.
"Full confession," she answered, as she finished up washing her hands.
"Yeah? I knew the pipsqueak wouldn't last one minute in there with CD." The two of them looked at each other and knew what each other was thinking--CD could be one tough talker. 'It's gonna be a long night,' Magda thought as they exited the locker room and entered their working space. Surveying the scene of ringing phones, tired and shouting cops, and shuffling papers, Jinny was thinking the same thing. She took a deep breath when she walked over to her desk and saw the enormous stack of paperwork for her to do.
"I thought rookies did the paperwork around her," she said aloud, not expecting an answer. In fact, no one probably could have heard her anyway. Angela and CD walked in at that moment, and spotted the two of them. "Hey, I need the Robbins report tomorrow morning, Mag," CD directed to Magda. Magda nodded wearily in acknowledgement and, mumbling something about how much she hated the night shift, walked back to her desk. Angela looked around at the chaos and caught Magda's eye and looked at her and her paperwork in pity. "I'll see you guys tomorrow," she said, smiling weakly. Jinny looked up from her desk, and was about to say a sarcastic remark about Angela leaving them amid this mess, but she caught herself when she remembered that Angela was leaving early to catch a train to see a breast cancer specialist--just in case. A chorus of "See ya tomorrow"'s followed Angela out the door. Jinny sighed as she looked down at the stack in front of her. 'Where to began,' she thought, rather amusedly.
"Jin, can you come in here please." Jinny turned around at Captain's voice. Kate, usually strong and authoratative, looked a bit worn out tonight, Jin observed. 'Oh well,' she thought. 'Must be the hectic holiday schedule.' Jinny got up slowly, slightly irritated because she wanted to get on that paperwork so she could get it done. She glanced over at Magda, who also looked up at Jinny. Magda had a mildy worried expression on her face--It was usually trouble when Jinny was called into Captain's office. CD was too caught up in her workload to have even noticed Captain's query. Jinny followed Kate into her office and managed to hide her anticipation. She couldn't remember messing up on any recent case. "Close the door, Jinny...and have a seat." Silently, Jinny obeyed the commands. "Jinny, it's not my business to get involved in your personal life," Kate began. Jinny let her breath go and sank into her chair. She knew where this was going. She knew *exactly* where this was going. "But I had no choice this time--"
"Of course you have a choice," Jinny spat out angrily. "This is my life and--" Kate abruptly cut her off, but not too harshly. Rather unlike her, Jinny noticed.
"Jinny, this isn't about any of that." They both knew what 'that' meant. "Someone called my office today and asked to speak to you." This unusual information made Jinny suddenly attentive. "Now you know that I don't take personal calls for my officers, but she said something to me that she wanted me to relay to you." Jinny was deeply confused and was doubled over with curiousity by now. "Jinny, she asked me to leave a message for you." Kate stopped for a moment. "Jinny, she said to tell you that your daughter called."

** Back to 1983 **
Jinny knew her brother Kasey would be home soon. She would have to clean up the mess in the bathroom. Barely able to see through her teary eyes, Jinny picked up the home-pregnancy kit and its box and shoved them deep into the wastebasket. She almost never let herself cry, but this was different. This was her entire life that was ruined now. She sat on the toilet seat and cried bitterly. Incomplete thoughts shuffled around inside her head: she had been so careful....who was the father......how would her dad react. A slamming door tore Jinny from her thoughts. "Jinny!" It was her dad, John Sr. Pity was overcome by terror at the thought of her father seeing her like this. In her current state, she might accidently tell him everything through her tears. And she didn't want him to find out. At least not yet. She shot up from her crumpled position and wiped her face with the back of her hand. 'Come on, get with it Jin,' she told herself. 'You idiot, don't let him see you like this!' she berated. She could hear her father coming down the hall. "Jinny! Are you here?" She paniced and froze on the toilet seat. Her dad walked into the bathroom, huffing and puffing like he'd just run a mile. "Oh, Jinny girl!" He was so relieved to see her that he failed to notice her red puffy face. She managed a weak "Hi Dad."
"I was so worried about you! The message machine didn't kick in so that means you didn't turn it on, which meant you were home....and you didn't pick up the phone--" John stopped when he finally noticed his daughter's state and her transparent gaze. "Jinny, are you okay baby?" He took a few steps closer to Jinny, ready to scoop her up in his arms like he used to do when she was just a little girl. But Jinny held out her hands and motioned him away. Then John realized that his daughter had been crying in the bathroom that her mom had killed herself in, and it seemed to make perfect sense to him. "Okay, honey, I understand." Jinny didn't know what he meant, but then it clicked with her too. He thought she was crying over mom.
"Yeah, Dad," she said weakly. "So, can you please, uh, leave me alone for a little more?" She hated herself for using her mother's suicide as an excuse.
"Sure, baby. I gotta get back to the station anyways." John Sr. started to back out of the bathroom, since it made him extremely uncomfortable. His daughter-in-trouble emergency sensors had been replaced by standing-in-wife's-suicide-position, need-to-leave sensors. "I'll be home in a few hours." He hated leaving his daughter like that, but he was immediately relieved as he stepped into the hall and away from the memories. Jinny sat there on the toilet until she heard the front door close behind her father. She took another deep breath and tried to stand up, but her legs felt like jell-o and wobbled unstably beneath her, and she fell back down to the seat. A few more tries and she finally managed to get herself to the hall. When she passed the mirror in the hall, she saw how bad she looked. She was covered in sweat and her hair was all oily with perspiration. Her nightie was sticking to her flesh as if glue was present. Jinny stared at herself and wearily fell into a daze. Just then the front door opened again. "Bye, thank you again!" Kasey was half inside the door, calling to his friend in the drive way. He fully entered the living room and started strolling down the hall, only to freeze when he saw his sister. "Jinny!!" His brother instincts kicked in and he tore down the hall to help his sister, who looked about ready to collapse. Jinny was disoriented by the night's events and had gotten lost in her thoughts again. "What's wrong, are you okay?" Kasey asked, extremely worried. But then he realized she must be drunk. It was a common occurrance, after all. "Okay Jin, let's get you to bed," he said, putting one of her arms around his neck. He half dragged his sister to her room and layed her as carefully as possible on her bed. "Jin....," he murmered lowly, staring at his half-conscious sister. "Why do you do this to yourself." Kasey looked down at the floor, and realized something was different from the previous times he had helped Jinny in one of her drunken stupors. First, he noticed, there were no beer cans on the floor. And second, he didn't smell alcohol on her breath when he had brought her back to her room. Now he was really worried about his sister. She was the single most important thing to him. Without her, he didn't feel like he could go on. Then a terrible thought crept into his head: what if Jinny had stepped up and was doing drugs now? It was all too much for him to take, and he slowly left his sister's room, gently closing the door behind him. Funny, he thought, on the other side of the door, how she seemed so peaceful, laying there in bed like that. Maybe it was better for her to deal with things her own way, he decided. Then he got mad at himself for thinking that. Of course it wasn't good for her to do what she did, and now maybe doing drugs on top of all of that. How could he stand by and watch her do that to herself when she was always there for him, helping him when he needed someone? Terribly sad and confused, Kasey went to his own room and closed the door. The only person he could talk to was the one person who he felt needed him the most.
Back in her bed, Jinny was half awake and thinking, and half asleep already. Even though it was early for her, about 11:00, she wanted nothing more than to sleep. She was emotionally tired more than anything else. For some reason, her thoughts drifted to the party she was missing. And what she knew she would be doing at the party, she thought bitterly. And once again, she surrendered herself to the tears.

** 2001 **
Jinny could hardly believe what she had just heard. Her *daughter*? That was impossible! She was lost in a daze and couldn't understand what Kate was saying. Finally she heard Kate say "Why don't you go home and take the night off, Jinny?" Jinny nodded her head and walked out of the office. She failed to see Magda and CD look up at her with worry and confusion as she walked out, and she barely remembered getting herself home. The next thing she *did* fully remember was the refreshing taste of the booze as it ran down her throat and throughout her entire body. Kate's words, "...your daughter called..." repeated over and over in her head until she was too buzzed to remember them all. As she began her second, third, and fourth beers that night, different thoughts began to surface. Painful thoughts that she had tried to forget for the past 20 years...
** 1983 **
Jinny awoke the next morning feeling very refreshed, until she remembered the horror of the previous night's events. 'Thank G-d it's Saturday,' she thought, as she couldn't even imagine herself being able to function at school. She glanced at her clock--7:30 a.m. Thoughts raced through her head despite the early morning hours, and she got up to take a shower. Her sweaty body had soaked her sheets during the night and she was covered in perspiration. She began to undress herself, but stopped to look down at her stomach. It was very sexy, as any boy who had seen it could attest. She managed to keep in tanned, even in the winter, and she worked out at least 4 times a week, making hers ab muscles very toned. But it was still very feminine, and she had never really stopped to admire this part of her body. Jinny placed the palm of her hand flat on her stomach. She knew that a baby was in there, and it was going to grow. She really hadn't paid attention during the various health classes she'd taken over the years, so she had no clue when she would start to show. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. She jumped in surprise and quicky grabbed a towel to cover up her naked body. "Yeah, Kas?" she asked, slightly annoyed at being disturbed. "Actually, it's me." She was surprised to hear that it was her older brother's voice instead. "What do you want?" she asked coldly. She was in no mood for dealing with John Jr. right now. "Geez, don't jump all over me, sis," he said in his usual cocky manner. "Besides," he added, in a low whisper, "You don't wanna get me mad, since I know someone jumped all over *you* and knocked you up." John Jr. was laughing at his perceived humor as Jinny ran to the door and tore it open, despite wearing only a thin towel. John Jr. stopped laughing when he saw that Jinny was giving him a look that could kill. Then he broke the silence, pointing at her stomach area and saying, "I think you're showing already!" That was too much. "Why, you son of a...." Jinny screamed and hurled herself at her brother. In a flurry of fists, feet, and towel, the two of them began to fight violently. Kasey heard the struggle and ran out of his room, still in his pajamas. "Jinny!" he cried, seeing the mass of fighting siblings on the hall floor. "Dad, dad!" he hollered. John Sr., fully suited up in his police uniform, was already on his way from the kitchen, where he had been waiting for his ride. "That's enough!" he screamed at the kids. John Jr. and Jinny froze when they heard him, and they turned to face their father. Jinny noticed part of her femininity was viewable, as her towel had been knocked aside during their struggle. She blushed and pulled it back up over herself. "I've got to get to work," he said sternly. "But we're gonna talk about this when I get home. No one goes out tonight!"
"But Dad!!" John Jr. protested.
"I mean it!" There was enough conviction in his voice to keep John Jr. from further protests. A honking from the front drive way told John Sr. that his ride was waiting for him. He looked like he was about to say something else, but decided against it. With that, he turned and stalked down the hall and out the door. Kasey just stood there, gaping at the scene. "Close your mouth, you look like a retard," John Jr. said, pushing Jinny off of him.
"Don't talk to him like that!" Jinny shouted at him. John Jr. just got up and pushed past Kasey into their room, slamming the door behind him. "Jin..." Kasey began, but Jinny just held up her hand. "I don't wanna talk about it Kas," she said weakly. She gathered herself up and went into the bathroom to take her shower, leaving Kasey alone in the hall. 'I hafta let dad know about my suspicions,' he thought to himself. 'I owe it to Jinny to look after her, like she's always looked after me.' He decided to tell his dad that night his suspicions that Jinny was using drugs.

** 2001 **
The doorbell rang and woke Jinny up the following morning. She lifted herself up out of bed but immediately regretted it as she felt a wave of nausea rise from within her. Hangover. The buzz sounded again, and she called out that it was open. The door opened and closed, and a few seconds later, Teddy dear was at Jinny's side. The first thing he noticed was the unbelievable amount of beer cans all over the bedroom floor. He had always suspected there was a problem, but this still surprised him. She was so glad to see him that she hugged him for what seemed like an eternity. "Are you okay Jinny?" he asked. "I went to see you at work today and you weren't there." Then he felt something wet on his shirt. He realized Jinny was silently crying, and he pulled her even closer. "Kate....Kate told me what happened last night." he murmured, stroking her hair gently. By now, Jinny's crying had become anything but silent. She tried to tell him everything at once, but it came out too illogically too understand. Finally, Jinny regained her composure and told Teddy the story she hadn't dared to think about in years.
** 1983 **
Jinny kept to herself the whole day, and John Jr. did the same. The two of them were playing 'the silent treatment' game, but neither really knew why. Of course Jinny had all the reason in the world to be angry at her brother, but she also knew that John Jr. dealt with stuff by being a jerk. She hoped that deep inside, he really did care about her situation, because she knew she would need all the support she could get. Kasey, meanwhile, had hidden out in his room all day, avoiding everyone. He couldn't bear to look Jinny in the eye, considering how he felt like he was about to betray her. But he was ready to face her wrath if it meant saving her life. Finally dusk arrived and their father pulled up in the driveway, via his partner's car. John Jr. was watching TV in the living room and Jinny was in her room reading. Kasey bounded out the door when he heard the car pull up, and John Jr. got up to look out the window to see what he was doing. He had sat their father down and was talking to him with a serious look in his eye. John Jr. just shrugged it off and went back to the TV, assuming it was something stupid Kasey wanted to tell Dad about. About ten minutes later the two of them walked in, father first, son second. John Sr. had a serious look on his face, and John Jr. remembered the promise of a 'talk' later on. His dad was never one to follow up on those things though. "Jinny," he called up the hall. Jinny opened the door a crack and looked down the hall. "Yeah Dad?" she asked. "What is it?"
"Will you come into the living room please. I have something to talk to you about." Her father's seriousness kind of scared Jinny. She had no idea what to expect. She speculated as to what was going on as she wandered down the hall. They didn't have a dog, so it couldn't have been that a pet died. And it couldn't be a family member--. She stopped herself on that thought. Besides, she was already in the living room. John Jr. and Kasey were there, too, and John Jr. looked really annoyed. 'Dad must've interrupted his TV programming' she thought, and not without a smile.
John Sr. stood at the front of the room, looking over his children slowly. "There's a serious issue that has been raised in this house," he began. All at once, Jinny's smile faded and her palms begin to sweat. 'John Jr. told Dad!!' she thought with hate. Her fists tightened as she imagined them strangling her older brother. Her father didn't seem to notice Jinny's sudden mood change, or else he ignored it. "Jinny, I think we need to know the truth, here and now." Jinny couldn't believe what was happening. If her father *had* found out, there was no need for him to announce it this way. 'Oh G-d,' she thought, horrified. 'Not with Kasey just sitting there like that.'
"...and I think that there's something we need to do about it," her father was saying. Jinny jumped up and stopped her father with a hand to his shoulder. "Dad," she started. She could feel tears well up inside her. "It's true!" she sobbed.
"I can't believe this, Jin!" her father yelled. "Alcohol is one thing, but actual drugs?" He lowered his head, weakening. "I thought I...we...I...raised you better than that." Jinny was suddenly confused. "Drugs?" she asked, bewildered. "What are you talking about Dad?" Now it was John Sr.'s turn to look confused. "That's what this meeting was about.....your brother had concerns that you were using drugs...." He saw Jinny's face and saw that she was just as confused as he was. They both turned to Kasey and John Jr. John Jr. gave a 'don't look at me' kinda face, but Kasey just dropped his head. "I'm sorry Jin...I was just so worried, and concerned about you....I thought you were doing drugs....." Kasey trailed off as he began to cry. "I'm sorry Jinny" he said through tears. "It's okay, Kas," she said, sitting down next to him to give him a sisterly hug. Jinny couldn't really be angry with him. After all, she *had* been acting weird the past few days. "Well, I guess I'll be in my room," Jinny said, as she popped up from the couch. "Okay...." her father answered, still confused about the last few minutes. "But wait Jin!" Jinny stopped in her tracks, about half way up the hall. "Yeah, Dad?" she asked, turning slowly. "What were *you* talking about?" Her dad's eyes narrowed. Jinny closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She figured she couldn't hide the truth forever. She walked back towards the living room and faced her family. She glanced up at John Jr., but instead of seeing a snicker on his face, which she suspected, he actually looked empathetic and concerned. That sign gave her enough courage to continue with what she had to say. "Dad, I have something really important to tell you."
I have more ideas, but should I continue?

"And so that's how my father found out." Jinny was directing her words to Teddy, but she was staring at the wall the entire time. Throughout the entire story, Teddy hadn't said a single word. Instead, he had just sat there, listening to Jinny tell him about one of the most personal things in her entire life. "He of course was really upset," she continued, wiping away another tear. "I...I actually think Kas took it the hardest...it took him years to fully recover from what had happened." Jinny stopped, choosing her next words very carefully. "And you would have thought that I would've learned my lesson, that I would've stopped being so....so promiscuous..." Her words trailed off.
"Jin, don't do this to yourself!" Teddy pleaded. "You're making yourself sick." He brushed Jinny's hair out of her face and kissed her forehead. After that, there was complete silence for a long time. Then Jinny spoke up again, barely in a whisper. "But I didn't....if anything I started to sleep with even more guys..." Teddy started to say something but Jinny stopped him. "I couldn't finish high school, and I wasn't allowed to graduate with my class." Jinny was still talking to the wall. There was another long silence, before Teddy hesitantly asked, "What happened to the baby, Jinny?"

Sorry for takin' so long. Here's some more:
** 1984 **
It was a Saturday night in July and the Exstead house was empty. John Sr. was at work fighting crime, Kasey was at a friend's house sleeping over, John Jr. was at some party getting drunk, and Jinny was at the hospital giving birth. She had been at home watching TV when her water. She had managed to call her friend Susan up, and Susan had driven over and taken Jinny to San Francisco Mercy Hospital. While a team of nurses and doctors intercepted the two of them inside the ER, Jinny noticed how everything looked the same in the hospital since the last time she was here. It had been five years ago when Kasey broke his leg and Jinny had sat in the ER, waiting for the doctors to tell her Kas would be okay. Jinny remembered how worried she had been. Her thoughts were interrupted by Susan telling her that she had to go into the waiting room. Jinny smiled weakly at her only friend and nodded. Thirty minutes later Jinny was met in the hospital room by her doctor, Doctor Mendez. He was telling her that Social Services had been called and were on their way. Jinny nodded in understanding. She didn't have to ask what he meant by that, because she already knew. As soon as she gave birth, her baby would be taken away from her to be placed under the care of the adoptive parents, who had also been notified. The Exstead family had decided that adoption was the best solution, and there was no way to see what the father wanted, because Jinny had no idea who the father was. And as it turned out, no one ever came forth to claim responsibility anyway. Jinny didn't remember a lot of what happened that night. She was tired and scared, and the nurses kept poking her with needles. She didn't know that her father had been called and that he was in the waiting room. Susan had gone home hours ago. She also didn't know that her two brothers were there with her father. All she knew was that this was the most pain she'd ever felt in her entire life.
~ The Next Morning ~
"Jinny girl..." Jinny was awakened by the sound of her father's voice. She slowly opened her eyes and saw her father looking down at her. She managed a weak smile, only to be followed by a slight frown. She didn't really know why she was frowning. After all, she had all the reason in the world to be happy. It was finally over, and she could go on being another normal teenager. "Are you feeling okay?" John Sr. continued.
"I'm fine, dad," Jinny lied. The truth was that she was as uncomfortable as she'd ever been in her life. She was drowning in her own sweat, she was exhausted, and of course she had just given birth the night before. "When can we go home?" she asked tentatively.
"The doctors said everything went fine, and you can go home tonight." Jinny glanced over at the door and saw her two brothers standing in the doorway. She noticed Kasey's shell-shocked state and John Jr.'s all-too-familiar indifference. But beyond John Jr.'s facade was a deeply worried older brother who had beat up countless guys for spreading stories about Jinny's pregnancy over the past 9 months. When Jinny made eye contact with Kasey, he immediately dropped his eyes to the floor, not wanting to stare at his sister. The four of them stood there inside the hospital room in silence. They were all relieved that this nightmare was over, but Jinny couldn't help feeling a little sad at the thought of never seeing her little baby again. But when she looked up at the three men in her life and realized how much of a burden she'd been lately, she berated herself for feeling that way. She made a solemn vow to herself to never think about this night again. 'It never happened,' she said to herself. 'None of this ever happened.'

** 2001 **
After Jinny was done telling her story, Teddy sat there in silence. He had no idea what to say or how he could comfort her. During the story, Jinny had leaned back on the bed, but Teddy continued sitting in the same position he had been in for the past hour. "And then this call came in," she said weakly. Teddy then laid down next to Jinny, taking one of her hands into his. Jinny buried her tear-streaked face into Teddy's shoulder, just like she had tried to bury the memories of her daughter. The two of them laid like that, without another word, for the rest of the afternoon.
The ringing telephone woke Jinny up. She was disorientated and realized she had fallen asleep in Teddy's arms. Teddy was gazing down at her, and asked if he should answer the phone. Jinny nodded her head and closed her eyes again. "It's Kate," he said, covering the mouthpiece with his hand. Upon hearing that, Jinny snapped back into reality. She sat up and suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of shame for opening herself up like that to Teddy. ‘You're so stupid for telling everything to him' she thought to herself. She regained her lost composure and got out of bed, Teddy following her with his eyes. "Tell her," she said, walking over to the closet, "that I'm coming into work today." Teddy was about protest but Jinny stopped him. "I'm okay, Theodore," she reassured him. "I hafta get on with my life." Teddy hesitantly put the receiver back up to his ear and relayed the message. By the time he had hung up, Jinny was already on her way to the shower. Teddy had no choice but to get up and leave her, despite his concern. "Bye, Jinny," he said, giving her a parting kiss. "I'll see you later, Teddy," Jinny answered, rather nonchalantly. Her tone was back to normal--it was as if nothing out of the ordinary had ever taken place. And once Teddy had left and she had gotten into the shower, Jinny kept repeating to herself over and over: ‘It never happened...it never happened...'

** PART II **
The next few days at the Division went pretty much like normal. Captain hadn't spoken to Jinny about what had happened, and Jinny hadn't dared bring it up to Captain. Other than a few brief glances in each other's directions, it was as if nothing had happened—and that's exactly what Jinny wanted. Magda knew that Jinny was hiding something, but she could tell Jinny was uncomfortable about it, so she didn't pry. Jinny's memories of what had happened gradually faded, and she was back to her usual self—but not for long.
It was a lazy afternoon in San Francisco; a cool breeze was coming off the ocean and not a single cloud marred the beautiful blue sky. Jinny and Magda were off early, and they decided to meet up with Gabriel and Teddy and shoot some pool down at Club Rock. "I don't see how it could be anyone but Kristoff," Magda was saying as the two partners walked out of SFPD headquarters. They were having a conversation about their latest case, a double homicide. "I know that it looks like him, but I just have this....this gut instinct that he's not our guy," Jinny explained. When they reached the front of the building, a voice behind them called out, "Jinny, Jinny Exstead!" The two cops turned to face a young woman who looked about 20 years old. She was gorgeous with a beautiful face and trusting green eyes. She wore her hair long, and she bore a striking resemblance to Jinny. "I'm Jinny Exstead," Jinny answered casually, slowly approaching the girl. The girl drew a deep breath upon hearing the reply.
"Jin..." Magda whispered, noticing the ironic similarity between Jinny and the stranger who sought her.
"Who are you?" Jinny asked slowly, as surprised as Magda at how familiar the girl looked. ‘It's like looking right at myself, only 20 years ago,' she thought in astonishment. She then rejected notion, because with it came unwelcome possibilities. The girl drew an even deeper breath. "I'm....I'm your daughter."

"To my daughter." 18 year old Jinny Exstead read the first line of the letter out loud. "No, that's dumb," she decided. She crinkled up the piece of notebook paper and threw it into the wastebasket. She was laying across her bed on her stomach, pen in hand. "Hmmm..." she wondered. It had been three months since Jinny had given birth to and given up her daughter. It had been three months of resting and catching up on old habits—which included drinking. But this afternoon she was completely sober, as she worked on something she really wanted to turn out well. Things were pretty much back to normal, except for Kasey, who seemed a bit distant ever since the adoption. Jinny pulled out a fresh piece of paper from her notebook. ‘Dear daughter,' she began writing. "Nah," she scowled, and threw that piece into the wastebasket, too. This continued for a few minutes until there was a knock at the door. She threw down the pen and paper and covered it all with her pillow. She wanted to keep her letter a secret. "Who is it?"
"It's me Jin." Her father's strong voice sounded a little muffled through the heavy wooden door. Funny, she thought, and walked to the door to open it. But before she reached it, John Sr. came bursting through the door with a funny looking grin on his face. Jinny immediately knew he had been drinking. "Let's go watch TV together, Jinny girl," he said, slurring the words so that it sounded more like "Les go waz Ti-vee tugethar, Jinee gull." Jinny sighed; she knew the drill. Still, she was slightly annoyed as she led him down the hall to his room and guided him to his bed. "It's time to sleep, Dad," she told him firmly. "Okay, Jin," he answered. He laid down and closed his eyes, and Jinny knew he would be okay like that. She crept out of the room and turned the light off, which didn't do a lot of good since it was still light outside anyway. On her way back to her room, she suddenly had an inspiration. She knew what to write to her daughter.

Jinny Exstead stared blankly at the girl who had just professed to be her daughter. Thoughts spun around in her head and she had a million things to say, but she said nothing. The surroundings began to lose their focus, and she closed her eyes tightly, hoping this was all in her imagination. Magda looked incredibly confused, but she recovered before Jinny. She looked from the girl, to Jinny, and back to the girl. "What did you say?" she asked, thinking it was a case of mistaken identity. ‘Jinny doesn't have a daughter,' she thought. ‘What is going on?'
"I'm Jinny's daughter," the girl repeated, a little scared this time. "Don't you know about--"
She was cut of by Jinny coming back to reality. "Nothing!" she exclaimed, still a bit nauseous. She pointed to the girl. "You," she said with a touch of anger. "Stay here!" She glanced up at Magda and motioned for her to walk back into the building together. As soon as they rounded the corner, Magda turned to her friend, and asked "What the hell is going on Jinny?" She looked angry, but her tone spelt out frustration and concern. "Look, I don't want to go into this right now." She looked over Magda's shoulder and saw the girl still standing outside, her back towards them. "I need you to do something for me, Mag," she said nervously. Magda was taken aback by Jinny's unfamiliarly pleading type of tone. She was also worried about how pale and tense her friend looked. After a brief hesitation, she said, "Sure Jin, just name it." Jinny looked a bit relieved.
"Okay, go ahead and meet the guys like we planned, but just tell them—tell them that I'm staying late on a case." Magda was about to say something else but Jinny stopped her. "Just please do this for me, no questions." Jinny looked almost desperate.
"Okay Jin," Magda replied, still confused by the entire situation. Jinny nodded in thanks and watched Magda exit by herself, turning around to look at Jinny one last time before turning the corner. Jinny stood there by herself a few moments and tried to regain her composure. ‘So...so it's my daughter,' she calmed herself. ‘So what? I don't owe her anything, and there's nothing she needs from me.' Jinny would be wrong about that one—dead wrong.

Inspector Exstead took a deep breath and walked back outside to meet a daughter that she hadn't thought about in almost two decades. She walked up behind the girl and cleared her throat. The girl turned quickly and stared at Jinny. There was an uncomfortable silence, accompanied by two uncomfortable individuals. The loud noises of San Francisco faded into the background as mother and daughter looked at each other clearly for the first time. "So...you're the one who called," Jinny said finally. It wasn't really a question, but the girl replied, "Yeah." They continued to stare. "My name is, uh, Rebecca." Jinny nodded and stopped herself right before she was about to say, "My name is Jinny." Obviously Rebecca knew that already. "So, how did you find me?" Jinny asked, in hidden awe. "Well it's kind of a long story," she said.
"Maybe we should go somewhere else to talk," Jinny suggested with uncertainty. Rebecca looked around and laughed nervously. They were standing on one of the busiest, crowded streets of San Francisco. "Okay," she agreed. The two of them shifted to the other foot at the same time, reminding them of their genetic bond, and caused them both to look away in uneasiness. "How ‘bout the little cafe at the end of the block," Jinny said casually, in hopes of easing the tension. But he entire scene remained tense, as biological mother and daughter continued their first-ever conversation. "Sure," Rebecca nodded.
"Well, my car is in the employee lot," Jinny said, pointing down the street to the station's private parking lot. "Yeah, my car is in the visitors section." More silence.
"Okay, well then I'll see you in a few minutes," Jinny said, with overacted sanguinity. "Okay," Rebecca replied. The two parted and began walking off to their respected parking lots, each with an uncountable number of thoughts swarming through her mind.

Yeah, you've been going to church, but you just don't buy all this Holy, Holy stuff. You take a bite of your peanut-butter sandwich, which is your breakfast. During the process of angrily honking your horn at a slow milk-truck in front of you, with about 40,000 bumperstickers on it, a wad of peanut butter gets stuck in your throat. You start coughing, and the car swerves uncontrollably. You run into the milk-truck, and it turns over on top of you, spilling milk all through your windshield and flooding your car. You stay there, almost drowning in milk, until you vaguely hear sirens and muffled voices. They carefully pull you out of the car, and place you on the strecher. One of the last things you see are two bumper stickers on a twisted piece of metal left from the truck, side by side. One of them says, "Got Milk?" the other says, "Got God?" As you are being loaded into the ambulance, you use the last of your strength to give out one final cry of pain. You close your eyes in prayer, asking the Lord to forgive you of your sins, thanking him for sending his Son to die on the cross for you. Suddenly some of what the strange man up in the pulpit has been preaching clicks in your mind, and you start to weep. You feel your strength flowing from you, but you stay calm, still mouthing, "Thank you, Jesus." You calmly take your last breath, knowing that you've finally figured something out, you've given your life to Christ, and you're going to Heaven...
Okay, was that too dramatic? Hmm, dunno, but I felt the need to type it, I've been in a witnessing mood lately. ?I intend to take this board for Jesus, well, if not at least one person, and all you have to do is do just what the person did in the story, that might be a real scenario someday, all I can tell you is be prepared. Well, TJ will kill me for this signature, buh-byezies! :)

Jinny held up the piece of notebook paper in self-satisfaction. It had taken her all night, but she had finally finished the letter to her daughter. She bounced out of bed happily and set the letter casually on her bed. Humming the latest rock song, she left he room and went down the hall to find an envelope.
"Jinny?" Kasey popped his head into his sister's room, which was partially ajar. The room was empty. He was about to turn around when the letter caught his eye. Now Kasey was never the prying type, but he wanted to know what was going on in Jinny's life. 'Just a little peek won't hurt,' he thought to himself. 'It's for her own good,' he continued, trying to convince himself that getting involved was the only way to save Jinny from her addictions. Heart beating loudly in his chest, he crept into the room and quietly shut the door behind him. He tiptoed over to her bed and picked up the letter.

'If you're reading this letter, that means that you are the daughter I gave up in 1984. I'm not sure how you'll get this, but it probably means that I'm no longer around. My name is Jinny and I'm 18 years old. I wanted the best for you, and I hope you never resent me for giving you up. Just know that I never could have given you what you deserve in life. I wanted you to have a mother who would be able to take care of you. Whatever happens in life, know that it has to be better than what I could have given you. I hope you are doing well and have accomplished much in your life. My father tries hard to be a good dad, and he usually is. But I wanted you to at least have a father. That's pretty much it...I hope you have a loving family of your own one day, if not already. -- Jinny Exstead, 1984'
The letter ended there. Kasey sat on the bed in shock, surprised at how loving Jinny could be, but taken aback by her sentiments to a daughter who had caused nothing but hell in all their lives. He noticed a few dried tear drops by the word 'mother' in the letter, and that he had added a few of his own. He was sitting there on the bed, holding the letter in his hand, when Jinny burst through the door.

‘Maybe this won't be so bad,' Jinny Exstead thought optimistically on the way to the cafe. It wasn't very far away, just a few minute's drive. Steering with one hand, she reached into her pocket and felt for the letter. Almost 18 years ago she had written this letter to her daughter, in the chance that someday, someone might be able to deliver it. When Jinny had gone home after Kate's message, she had immediately dug though old boxes until she found it, and had worn it in her pocket ever since. She didn't take it out; she just wanted to feel that it was still there. It gave her courage to face her daughter. Jinny almost missed the turning lane, she was so wrapped up in her thoughts. Tires squealed as she wrestled with the steering wheel to pull into the cafe's parking lot. She pulled into a free space and killed the engine. She was surprised when the music that had been playing from the radio ceased as well. She hadn't even realized it was playing. Jinny took a deep breath and stepped out of the vehicle. A moment later a little red Honda pulled into the lot, and Jinny recognized Rebecca as the driver. Rebecca waved to Jinny and pulled into a spot two spaces down from Jinny. They met at her car and said hello to each other. Even though they were both still a little uncomfortable in each other's presence, the tension was bearable and they could talk a lot more normally now—as in complete sentences. "Wow, I really like your car," Rebecca gushed, looking over at Jinny's [car name]. Jinny managed a little grin and commented about how many years it would take her to pay it off. "Sometimes you just gotta spoil yourself," she said.
Rebecca nodded, and said, "Are you ready to go in?" They were walking through the parking lot when Jinny observed a familiar car. ‘Why, that looks like....' she thought.
"Magda's car!" Jinny blurted out, stopping dead in her tracks.

"Pardon?" Rebecca asked, turning around. "Oh my G-d!" Jinny said, throwing her hand over her forehead. In her previous state, she had absent-mindedly suggested they go to the cafe at the end of the block—which happened to be the cafe she and Magda were supposed to have met Teddy and Gabriel. Jinny glanced up at the cafe's large sign, and sure enough it read ‘Club Rock.'
"What is it?" Rebecca asked, seeing the look of horror on Jinny's face. There was a note of concern in her voice. Jinny tried to retain her composure, which was tough since her gut instincts were screaming at her to run away as fast as she could.
"Huh, what?" Jinny asked distractedly, suddenly remembering Rebecca's presence.
"You just said something about a Magda's car..." Rebecca reminded her. Jinny had no strength to go into her own personal life right now and explain everything, so she just prayed that they would be on the other side of the cafe, which had the club atmosphere, shooting pool.
"Oh, that..." Jinny began. "I just remembered that I hafta, uh, pick up my partner tomorrow, cause, well, her car is in the shop." Without a pause, she said, "Well, let's go inside." Rebecca shrugged at Jinny's explanation and they proceeded to the door.
‘Thank you God,' Jinny thought with relief, as the two of them walked into the cafe. Magda and the others were nowhere in sight. In fact, the entire place seemed empty. An older couple were at the far end of the small room, and a young man sat in the corner, writing. Jinny knew that more people would be on the other side of the building, where the fun was. She and Rebecca took a table next to the wall that was a completely see-through window, at Jinny's request. It was perfect to view the parking lot. Rebecca had complied, but was catching onto Jinny's strange behavior the last few minutes. Jinny kept looking around the cafe and was sitting on the edge of her seat.
"Are you okay Jinny?" Rebecca asked finally.
"Yeah." Jinny faked surprise. "I'm fine," she added. "Really." And she relaxed her body to show it. Rebecca accepted her answer, but Jinny tried to change the subject anyway. She had a hundred questions for Rebecca, and she was sure Rebecca had questions for her. "So, how did you find me?" Jinny asked. She was sincere in her curiosity.
"Well, that kind of answers the question of *why* I looked for you." Jinny looked at her in interest and Rebecca took a deep breath. "First thing's first. Jinny, I have leukemia."
The feeling that overtook Jinny scared her. She barely knew this girl but she felt like a ton of bricks had just fallen on her. She had no idea what to say. "I'm, I'm sorry..." was all she managed. She knew that was pathetic. Rebecca understood Jinny's struggle for the right words and smiled gently. "It's okay, you don't have to say anything. I've accepted it," she reassured Jinny. Jinny nodded with relief, but was still extremely hurt by this awful news. Rebecca continued. "The only way for me to possibly live is to receive a bone marrow transplant...." Jinny knew where this was going. "And it has to be from a blood relative," she finished, understanding Rebecca's presence. At first Jinny felt angry that that was the only reason Rebecca had looked for her. Then she felt ashamed for feeling that way. After all, this girl was going to die without her. Rebecca had prepared herself to face anger, so she was happily relieved when Jinny gave a slight smile and nodded. Encouraged by Jinny's response, Rebecca continued. "See, I'm only 17, but the courts agreed to give me your name and location." Jinny was still listening attentively, occasionally nodding or acknowledging Rebecca's words. "I was surprised that we both still live in San Francisco. Anyway, I looked you up on the internet and saw that you were a police officer. From there, I called the station and I spoke to your captain." Jinny already knew about *that* part.
"I can't believe you did all that," she said in awe. "But then how did you know that was me coming out of the station?"
"Oh," Rebecca laughed. "Most of the officers' names and pictures are on the SFPD website," she said, proud of her tracking techniques.
"Wow," Jinny exclaimed. She was also amazed at Rebecca's tracking techniques. ‘What ingenuity,' she thought. For some strange reason, she felt proud of Rebecca. She realized her emotion and tucked it away. She didn't want to get close to this girl. That left you vulnerable. At that moment Jinny decided to keep their relationship formal. No way were emotions going to get involved. She was brought back to reality by Rebecca's voice, saying something about San Francisco Mercy Hospital. Jinny immediately snapped to attention and tried not to focus on the memories that had just been triggered by those words. But she couldn't help it—her mind started wandering back to 1984...

OMG, yes more...and this is like a book I read by Lurlene McDaniel, "Mother, Help Me Live". It's about a sixteen yr. old girl looking for her mom becuz she needs a marrow transplant. But her mom can't donate becuz she had breast cancer, though she was cured, she can't donate anyway...so I don't know if the girl died, because they never told. But I'm glad I live with my biological mom, I have leukemia...and if that ever happened to me, well...I don't know what would happen.

Jinny had found an envelope in a pile of papers in the corner of the living room. In an uncommonly good mood, she bounded back down the hall, still humming that 80's rock song. She pushed open her door but then came to an abrupt stop. Kasey was sitting on her bed, and he was holding a letter—*her* letter. After a second of taking this in, she flew to the bed, enraged, and grabbed the letter out of Kasey's hand. Kasey barely had enough time to open his mouth to speak before Jinny violently pushed him off the bed. "Don't touch that!" she screamed at him. Her intense fury scared Kasey and he covered his face in protection. He was in tears. "Jinny..." he cried out. "Don't ever come in here again!" she shouted, now between tears of her own. Kasey continued to sit on the floor, staring wide-eyed at his sister, whose rancor had turned into despondence. She crumpled to the floor in a trembling mass of emotions, and cried quietly. Kasey, heart still pounding and eyes full of tears, reached out to Jinny with one hand. Despite the episode, he could not turn off his love for his sister. If anything, he was even more determined to try and help her. But Jinny brushed his hand off her arm, without making eye contact. "Just go," she said weakly, through her tears. Kasey sighed and got up slowly. Making his way to the door, he turned around one last time and looked at Jinny. His eyes fell to the floor at the sight of his sister, and he reluctantly left the room.
Jinny opened her eyes. She was surrounded by darkness, and was lying precariously on the floor of her room. Her usually beautiful hair was otherwise tangled and stuck to her face by dried tears. She listened for any noise but the house seemed empty. She got up slowly and glanced at her alarm clock. It was 7 p.m. She had slept through the entire afternoon. Grabbing a brush, she began to brush her hair, untangling the mass of knots. Only then did she remember what had happened just hours before. She felt miserable. She had completely assaulted her little brother...her brother who only wanted the best for her. A brother who cared for her even after what she did. Guilt overcame her and she felt too depressed to even brush her hair. ‘God,' she thought bitterly. ‘Why do you let me live? I cause nothing but trouble. I've never done anything right in my entire life. My family would be much better off without me....' She lowered her head and stared at the floor in pity. Her gaze scanned the room, and she noticed the empty beer bottles underneath the bed. She brightened a little at the sight. ‘That's what I need,' she thought, more optimistically. "When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade," she said aloud, walking out the door and down the hall toward the kitchen. When she reached it, she swung the refrigerator door open and reached for the booze she knew would be there. ‘But when life hands you crap,' she thought comically, ‘make it all go away....'

"Huh?" Jinny was so wrapped up in her memories that she didn't even hear Rebecca's words.
"You're spacing, Jinny," Rebecca said, softly.
"Oh, I'm really sorry...I was just...thinking," Jinny explained tiredly. "What were you saying?" "Well, my doctor made the appointment for tomorrow night," she began again. "If that works for you, of course." She noticed the surprise in Jinny's eyes. "I know it's really soon, but the sooner the better," Rebecca explained. Jinny nodded her head, thinking about her schedule for the following night. She knew she got off at 4 o'clock the next day, and that would leave her enough time for the appointment. "Um, yeah, that works for me."
"Great!" Rebecca exclaimed happily. "It's at 7 o'clock, and just go to the front desk and give them your name. They'll tell you where to go." Rebecca's eyes were dancing, and it was only then that Jinny noticed that they had been slightly sullen the whole time. "Okay, then that settles that," Jinny stated bluntly. She regretted it the moment she said it, considering "that" was Rebecca's only hope for survival. Rebecca got a serious look on her face and for a second Jinny thought she had taken the comment negatively. Instead, Rebecca glanced down at the table, which had remained empty the whole time, and mumbled something incoherently. "What?" Jinny asked, leaning in to hear her.
"I said...well, I was just wondering..." Rebecca strived to find the right words.
"Go ahead, Rebecca," Jinny coaxed her. Rebecca still didn't look up, refusing to meet Jinny's curious gaze.
"I was wondering who my father is," she said at length. There was a long pause.
"Oh, that..." Jinny said, leaning back in her booth. She sighed deeply, and Rebecca finally looked up at Jinny. She assumed it was a sore spot, since there had been no information about him in the court-released documents. Jinny was about to say something when her beeper went off. ‘Saved by the bell,' she thought in relief. "Just a sec," Jinny said to Rebecca, and leaned down to check the page she had just received. "Look, I've gotta run." Jinny was already up and standing, straightening her jacket. "I'll, uh, meet you at the hospital tomorrow at, let's say, six?" Her words were rushed and she left no time for an answer. "Okay," Rebecca managed to squeeze in a confused response. "Bye Rebecca," Jinny called over her shoulder as she hurried through the exit. Rebecca watched Jinny walk through the parking lot. She saw a woman approach Jinny from the far side of the parking lot, and recognized her as the person from the police station. They exchanged some words and Jinny pointed at the cafe. Some more talking went on before they parted for their vehicles. She continued her surveillance until they had both driven off. Rebecca sighed; it had been an emotionally draining day. But then she brightened, because she knew the best way to unwind. In fact, it was the *only* way she ever chose to unwind. She called over a waiter. "Do you have any beer?" she asked him. "Beer is served on the club side only," he answered, pointing to a huge door at the end of the room.
"Thank you," she said, getting up. She grabbed her purse and began the short trek to the big door. When she reached it, she read the posted sign: ‘Under 21 Not Admitted.' She laughed to herself and pulled out her fake ID. She almost never needed it, as she could easily pass as a 21 year old without it. As she entered the familiar bar-like atmosphere, her weariness was replaced with excitement. Her demeanor transformed from an innocent teenager into an adult who was looking for a good time. She walked provocatively and winked sexily at the much older men sitting at the tables. She approached the bar and considered what to order. She decided on a Jack Daniel's. The bartender poured the desired alcohol into a shot glass and turned around to help another customer, but she stopped him. "Leave the bottle," she said knowingly. The man looked doubtful but complied. After all, Rebecca was an expert when it came to drinking....

I don't know if anyone (well, besides Susan http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif) still cares, but here's more. Sorry I haven't been in a writing mood forever.
** 1984 **
"...Jeremy Heigert...Dave Johnson...Mike Swanson...." Jinny sat on the floor of her room, beer bottle in hand, reading off names. Empty beer bottles cluttered the entire room—on her bed, desk, and all over the floor. No one had come home yet—not that she wouldn't have been able to tell, considering how dulled her senses had become from the booze. She took a chug between each name she said. Each word was more slurred than the next. It had become a game. The rules were simple: name all of the possible fathers of her child. But now she was stuck; she had already named eleven boys, but she couldn't remember the names of any more. She knew there were more, but the alcohol circulating in her system was making it easy to forget. And that was the point. But now she was needing something stronger. She had already wiped out her father's ‘secret stash' of vodka earlier that night. And all of the beer in the house was gone. ‘Well,' she thought with perceived ingenuity. ‘I'll just borrow John Jr's bike and take it to the store to get more to drink.' Jinny was no stranger to motorcycles. They were John Jr's hobby, and thus Jinny was exposed to the proper handling procedures and had ridden herself many times before. Taking out his Kawasaki seemed like the perfect solution in her mind. Of course, her mind wasn't exactly functioning properly that night. With uneven steps she staggered to John's room where she knew the key to start the motorcycle was. She was completely smashed, yet she somehow managed to stumble through the house and get outside without passing out. She floundered around to the side of the house to get to her older brother's motorcycle. After some unsuccessful attempts, she swung one leg over the side and sat down Her head was spinning and her eyes were glazed over, but she somehow turned the key in the engine and revved the engine. Luck was on Jinny's side that night, for as plastered as she was, it was amazing she didn't kill someone—including herself. The first two blocks were relatively empty and had no obstructions to zip around. But when she reached the third block, there were a few cars on the road with her. A sudden jolt underneath her caused her painfully slow reaction time to become apparent. The gigantic motorcycle hitting a small stone would have been fine under normal circumstances, given the driver was alert and reactive. And under normal circumstances, Jinny would have been quite capable of bringing the bike back under control. But Jinny lacked both of these qualities in her present state. The only thing that kept her even slightly alert was the cold air blowing her face, bringing some refreshment to her numbed senses. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough. A truck barely swerved out of the way as the bike's screaming tires skid across the black paved street, dragging Jinny's helpless body with it. A streetlight was what finally brought the bike to a sudden, screeching halt. Jinny and the motorcycle rammed into the streetlight with such force that the metal base cracked slightly. Her entire body was pinned underneath the heavy motorcycle, almost crushing her lungs and leaving her gasping for breath. Jinny's injuries, on top of her drunken state, prevented her from crying out. In fact, she wasn't even fully aware of what had just happened. The last thing she remembered seeing before losing consciousness was the bright shine of the streetlight burning boldly above her....
