According to the latest issue of the official Smallville magazine:

After seven years of guiding Smallville as the series' creators and
executive producers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will be departing the show
when it returns for an eighth season in September.

Taking the places of Gough and Millar as series show-runners are four long-time Smallville writer/producers [Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, Kelly
Souders and Brian Peterson].

Gough and Millar will now be devoting their undivided attention to their slate
of movie projects, including a feature based on the Disney "Jungle Cruise"
ride.

It's too bad Millar and Gough won't be around for the final season, but the show is in capable hands.

Maybe the new showrunners will make things exciting for Smallville's big finale.
