About a week ago I ordered a 5-tape box set with ten episodes of "The Lucy Show" on them. All of the episodes were from later in the run of "The Lucy Show" after Vivian Vance left and the kids left and all are episodes of "The Lucy Show" and none of her later series "Here's Lucy". Anyways, I must admit that I am less than ecstatic about what I saw.

I've heard that the later episodes of this series weren't the best, but I really just didn't see some things that I may have wanted to see. I admit, they were pretty funny at points, especially the Paul Winchell (that ventriliquist guy) and Jack Benny episodes. I didn't, however, see a lot of Mary Jane, which I raelly would have liked as she was one of the co-stars. I also didn't see as much character interaction as I would have liked. I admit, I have only seen three in their entirety, but I have seen parts from the others.

I did like the physical comedy, however, and did like the story lines for the most part. But what would have made it better was a little more of Gale Gordon and Mary Jane and seeing a little more interaction among Lucy and Gale/Mary Jane instead of just among Lucy and the person who that episode centered around.

I felt it was an alright series, but a little more character interaction and a little fuller stories would have done the show very well.

I definitely agree with you. They should have had fewer guest stars, added a few more regulars, and focused more on the ensemble, as they did with "I Love Lucy". The whole Lucy/guest star format got tired very quickly. I really enjoyed Mary Jane, both here and on "Here's Lucy". Too bad they didn't use her a little more.
