Toddlers who turn their noses up at spicy food from overseas could be branded racists by a Government-sponsored agency.
The National Children's Bureau, which receives £12 million a year, mainly from Government funded organisations, has issued guidance to play leaders and nursery teachers advising them to be alert for racist incidents among youngsters in their care.
This could include a child of as young as three who says "yuk" in response to being served unfamiliar foreign food.
The guidance by the NCB is designed to draw attention to potentially-racist attitudes in youngsters from a young age.
It alerts playgroup leaders that even babies can not be ignored in the drive to root out prejudice as they can "recognise different people in their lives".
The 366-page guide for staff in charge of pre-school children, called Young Children and Racial Justice, warns: "Racist incidents among children in early years settings tend to be around name-calling, casual thoughtless comments and peer group relationships."
It advises nursery teachers to be on the alert for childish abuse such as: "blackie", "Pakis", "those people" or "they smell".
The guide goes on to warn that children might also "react negatively to a culinary tradition other than their own by saying 'yuk'".
Staff are told: "No racist incident should be ignored. When there is a clear racist incident, it is necessary to be specific in condemning the action."
Warning that failing to pick children up on their racist attitudes could instil prejudice, the NCB adds that if children "reveal negative attitudes, the lack of censure may indicate to the child that there is nothing unacceptable about such attitudes".
Nurseries are encouraged to report as many incidents as possible to their local council. The guide added: "Some people think that if a large number of racist incidents are reported, this will reflect badly on the institution. In fact, the opposite is the case."

You're a racist if you don't like certain foods?
Come on, that's a bit over the top.
Kids are picky eaters, that's how it's always been. My sister has a hard time trying to get her daughter to eat certain things.
She hates vegetables - does that mean she's anti-PETA?

That is beyond retarded! I suppose the next thing they'll say is that I should be branded a racist if I don't like corned beef. Never mind that I think Ireland should be united and independent. I thought it was bad enough when communists and their sympathizers were making false accusations of racism against US foreign policy!

That's Bull****!
For awhile, I never liked Mexican, Chinese, or Italian foods. But I was a child then.
Now I don't really like Mexican food, but I'll eat that before I eat corn. And I like the Mexicans...except for the ones who come here illegally, but that's another topic.

 That study is so dumb. Kids are picky when it comes to food. Just because a kid doesn't like a food doesn't mean they're racist. I swear the race card is played waaaaay tooooo much.
I agree with you, Jenny. Everything seems to be turned into a race issue these days.

as i said, this stupid ruling only applies in the UK. if someone doesn't like eating a particular food then so be it, but it has nothing to do with it's origin or where the recipe first originated. and also, how the hell are those dim wits going to tell those little kids that they are indeed racist if they don't understand what the word 'racist' actually means at their age?
i think that since 9/11 and the 7/7 london attacks, the PC brigade have become over sensitive, in an attempt not to offend racial groups in society but its stupid laws such as this which make a mockery of them and the law becoming more of an ass

No kidding! But that doesn't mean this kind of stupidity can't happen elsewhere, including in the US. Let's hope it doesn't.

it's pathetic really- it's as to say if you are republican and typically right-wing, it means you're labelled as a racist, whereas if you are a democrat and therefore mainly liberal and leftist, you are deemed as the good guy . and so in relation to this case, the politically correct 'left' truly believe that disliking food that isn't from the west makes you a bigot. oh please, spare me from all this bull ****

 oy...what bs!
kids are very picky eaters & don't like foods because of the way they look & taste. it's got nothing to do with being racist.
plus, they shouldn't be eating spicy foods to begin with.

Toddlers can't comprehend what racism is and as already stated they have no business eating spicy foods to begin with. I can't eat foods that are overly spicy but it doesn't make me a racist. Toddlers are indeed very picky eaters and it has absolutely nothing to do with being racist. Some people definitely need to get real.

Heck, I'm almost 29 and I'm STILL a picky eater. I do like some spicy foods, but I'm not a fan of Mexican food.
