I've often heard Brenda referred as this and there's even a quote from Shannen saying:

"People were hating the character and I couldn't take the abuse that came with that. People couldn't separate me from her and I got sick of people assuming that I was as naughty and bad as Brenda was. It was all very hurtful."

I've never really seen Brenda as a bitch. Yeah, toward the end of season four she might have been a bit "edgier" but I really don't see how she was "naughty" or "bad." I guess I'm just rather confused how the whole thing began.

Directly from Shannen:

"i guess brenda got a little nasty towards the end however i feel that she was a girl who wanted more and was in a limited environment.but think about it she did go thru an awful lot.friends lied to her,her one true love cheated on her.she sorta had a reason to be a little bit bitter!!!"

I think Brenda had really great story lines in her last season. While I wasn't a fan of the Stuart Carson thing, I did enjoy the whole animal rights story and I really loved the sixties episode. The London thing was a great way to say goodbye to her. It would have been nice to see her return throughout the series.
