STALLED SERIES? THERE'S HOPE!:
(TV GUIDE)How many times have you started collecting a series on DVD only to find it's been "stalled" because sales of the previous sets weren't good enough? It's probably happened to you at least once, more if you're a fan of classic TV. While there are many issues that contribute to a stalled series, we're not going to focus on those today; this is an upbeat article.

Yes, I'm here to tell you there's hope for your favorite "stalled" series! We (meaning Dave and I at TVShowsOnDVD.com) have been told a number of the larger studios have been shopping around their catalog of shows, including some of the "stalled" shows. The major studios are recognizing they have properties that are still desired, even when they can't fiscally justify releasing the sets themselves. They've now "seen the light," and are willing to license shows to the independents. We've already seen this happen in the past, with BCI getting Wanted: Dead or Alive from New Line, Anchor Bay/Starz getting some of the VH1 titles (I Love New York and Flavor of Love), and, more recently, Shout! Factory picking up Sports Night (though that had been released in its entirety).

While I'm not able to list some of the titles that have been shopped around, I can tell you that many fans will have frowns turned into smiles in the next year. There's some great, great stuff coming out (unfortunately the 1966 Batman series isn't one of them). It's good to hold out hope for your favorite show because you never know what announcement will come tomorrow.

So, what are some of the "stalled" shows you hope to see resurrected by a smaller studio? — Gord Lacey

We can only pray that Facts of Life will resurrect from the dead again! It's always the mid-later seasons of this show that get the shaft! I can't tell you how annoyed this becomes to only see full-length episodes of Seasons One - Four -- what about the last um -- 5!! - Facts of Life Site"

We only have Seasons 1, 2, and 3 out.........where did they get the idea Season 4 was out?

Look at Charles in Charge......if a show like that can get picked up by Arts Alliance America, then FOL surely has a shot!!

I just hope that someone releases the DVD...and soon. What is the matter with Sony, anyway? I think with the exception of Bewithced, every one of their shows has been "stalled". Even All In the Family hasn't had a new season out in like two years. How do they decided which shows to put on the backburner and which ones to continue releasing? It can't be purly the sales figures since I doubt a kiddy show like Bewitched outsells a landmark sitcom like All In the Family.

This has become such a hopeless topic for me. I mean, even if we get Season 4, who knows how long until we see Edna's Edibles on dvd...nevermind Over Our Heads. It's really bugging me now. I hope someone else does license the show because Sony sure as hell doesn't intend on releasing more seasons. Any other studio would be dumb not to snatch it up and start making some money on it.

Someone from this board should picket outside the Sony offices! When was the last box set released - 10/2006??? Unacceptable!!

Heck, Sony's already reached the Dick Sargent era with the Bewitched DVDs!!

Mind you, BW had an earlier start on getting released first on DVD. Sony is intent on finishing BW because it already has extras lined up for the series set (which i will NOT buy).

But what a crocking shame that Sony is just abandoning shows left and right-FOL, DS, Silver Spoons, WTB?, etc

Look at how Sony has disregarded the classic '50s sitcom, Father Knows Best. It took another company, Shout! Factory, to start releasing it.

well now they seem to only be focusing on the 50s/60s. for a while there they were zeroing in on shows like "frasier" and "seinfeld" and all the other *bleep* that's being shown on TV all the time now. same thing with TV Land...the only "classic" sitcoms they're showing these days are "leave it to beaver", "i dream of jeanie" and "bonanza"! it's really annoying.

I e-mailed Sony a few months ago and I only got this automated e-mail response from them. I doubt they even read it. I wish that there were some way that we could all band together and do something to get Sony's attention and make our voice be heard, or at least figure out why Sony is ignoring fans like us.

yeah, ive emailed them several times...and contacted the minisode network (which is run by sony)! i got emails in return saying there are no projected dates for the seasons yet....but the minisode network told me they were currently working on it, but that was a few months ago!

i agree with you 100%. i don't understand why sony doesn't just release the rest of the seasons a couple of months apart. they could make some serious dough off of the show. we should be getting season 7 or 8 by now. =( it sucks because even though i have most of the show on tape from nick at night/hallmark, they skipped a couple of the more controversial episodes and sometimes my tapes would run out. plus, watching them on vhs or youtube just isn't the same as having them on dvd. i've e-mailed sony as well and voted for this show on dvd. i wish another studio would get through the legal aspects and start releasing this show on dvd.

a friend of mine who knows someone who works at sony says that sony was putting together the rest of the series and the three movies included as well as special documentaries about the show in a full boxed set. however, after seeing the success they recieved from releases of shows like "frasier", "friends" and "seinfeld" as well as more recent TV shows they decided to pull the plug on releasing anymore seasons of "facts of life" and put out more seasons of the newer shows. he also told me that they were about to put season 4 out but that time they decided on the full boxed-set of "seinfeld" instead, despite that it is on in reruns alot and the whole michael richards controversy. and now they're thinking of putting out an entire boxed set of "2 and a half men". sadly, they are zeroing in on all these sex-fueled newer shows, that all basically have the same premise and have no redeaming quality whatsoever.

sony needs to release the rest of the seasons individually then come out with a full box-set like all the other shows!!!

i agree with you. unfortunately, according to my friend, sony has absolutely no plans on releasing any DVDs of "facts of life". no boxed sets, no individual seasons, nothing. i told him about the petition and he said even though he signed it, sony doesn't pay attention to petitions. *sigh* ah well...at least i have the episodes i downloaded off of youtube and vidilfe.

If any of you have read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, I'm sure you will remember the part when the villagers got together into a mob and attack the barn where the monster is hiding out. I think we need to get oursleves a little FOL mob together and pay a visit to Sony's main offices. ;)

Hear-Hear!!

The only other shows I'm interested in from Sony are All In the Family, Square Pegs and One Day At A Time. Square Pegs has been released and since it is only one season long, they can't pull the plug on it. And I'm taking a wild guess that the plug has also been pulled on All in the Family and One Day At a Time as well. So I can't imagine why I would buy anything further from Sony. It's not like they make good movies.

Hey, all, haven't been around in a while, I know...there's been an idea circulating on how to get the post season 3 stuff up on YouTube in a way that would delay Sony ripping it down...then, at least, maybe everyone would have time to download, since Sony only seems interested in newer stuff getting DVD releases...

it's going to be at least 2 years since Jeannie has been on The TV Land Schedule (US TV Land that is). Same goes for Bewitched (which thankfully Sony hasn't stalled in DVD releases).

In response to the YouTube thing, a majority of the third season episodes ARE available on YouTube currently. They're all separated into about three parts. As far as I know, there's no way to get the fourth season, fifth season, sixth season, seventh season, eighth season, or ninth season episodes up there.

I think Sony will lose some business from their decision. There were a few seasons of shows I was going to buy but I decided against it. No "Facts", no sales! They have upset a lot of tv fans from the scope of threads and posts on this site and the Home Theatre forum. It probably won't make them declare bankruptcy but they certainly won't make the same amount of money they could be making had they continued releasing classic-tv-on-dvd.

Oh, there's a way to get post season 3 stuff up on YouTube...some season 4 eps are up (not under the plan, but they are there, as are the two movies...)

Anyone who wants in on the plan could PM me...pfeifferobsessed, you might like to come on board with this...

We had a plan to get around that, at least long enough to get an almost full set downloaded for free-trade...
