Another reason why I love this show! Just take a simple plot jumping point--Harriet admitting that the pancakes she made that morning were from a mix and not homemade and WHAM!......we have the makings of everyday life getting complicated  I love how Ricky claims the refund and then has the idea of getting more boxes to get more refunds (gee, Lucy would have that idea on The Lucy Show!) Of course, where it really gets silly is the idea that the president of The Hasty Tasty Pancake Mix Company would actually pay a personal visit to the Nelsons and cook up a batch of pancakes (of course topped with ice cream and chocolate syrup!).

"Heck, I don't mess around, boy!" Ricky :D

So Rich and Honeybea, any thoughts on this one? Please others join in the discussion. :)

Can you imagine the stuff we have seen on Norman Lear sitcoms ever being the plot on O&H? :faint:

But that's why I love O&H, because life is mainly about this everyday stuff and not the "BIG SOCIAL" causes on Norman Lear's shows :D

It was indeed a simple time back then. ;) Shows that were geared towards being funny and not giving a hoot abt political issues, social issues or causing controversy.

Hi Jude & Irene. Nothing like a good Convo on an O & H ep. Just went back and saw The Pancake Mix again. I love the way Oz & Thorny keep screwing up the name Handy Dandy,Hanky Panky, Turkey Lurkey etc. but esp. that store clerk so plagued by "higher math". Now HE was a riot - all befuddled by having to multiply 47 by 2 --you'd think he was doing Integral Calculus LOL. Hope someone sadistic doesn't come in the store and ask how many ounces are in a "fifth"! Ha Ha. And Ricky at the end claiming the pancakes are the best ever while when everyone's backs turned, takes the cakes of the bottom and keeping plowing thru the chocolate ice cream, jam, etc -the little schemer! Now everyone be sure to go out and buy some Listerine (better than penicillin according to the commercials)

P.S. "The Pajama Game" Ep on Disc #3 is a lot of fun!

There he is, Rich, my buddy, my pal! :D

Ricky was quite the little shrewd financier

The commercials are a SCREAM! Listerine for Dandruff????
Just watched "David's 17th Birthday"--the Mill Creek copy is much better than the other one I have (that one seems very edited)

007 Cologne??? oh my!!;)

my mom is enjoying this set as well.
I just wish Mill Creek could dig up another 100 episodes :D Imagine all the O&H's I have yet to see.

Yes "Davids 17th Birthday" is a lot of fun - will re-visit it sometime over the weekend. Are you going to be making a thread on it?? ( And, WHAT AM I SAYING, all the eps are fun - BUT - some are just absolutely terrific like Rick The Drummer, Wally's Traffic Ticket, The Fraternity Rents A Room, etc.)

Jude, I saw that episode for the first time about a year ago and loved it! Like you said, take a simple thing and make it so funny. I can imagine kids in that day and time actually trying this gimmick to make money. Ricky was so cute saying, "I don't mess around boy". He used this phrase a lot in his younger years on the show. Tutti Frutti ice cream is another favorite of mine. If you haven't seen the Halloween episode yet, pay close attention, Jerry Mathers "Beaver" has a small part.
There was also a commercial with Harriet about Listerine toothpaste in a few episodes. It sounds like Listerine was a cure all do all in those days. Glad you're enjoying the shows!

Yep, I saw Halloween Party on a previous DVD I own, but it was the first one I watched on the Mill Creek collection.

Was in the mood to watch some of the boys more grown up episodes tonight and will prolly post threads on them soon.

Please feel free to post more often, Honeybea--it is a delight to talk to you and Rich (and anyone else) about the joys of Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky!

And I'm not messin around, boy! :D

Yes that's a fun one. I like the Dave & June eps A LOT!! I really like the theme song ending (real nice jazzy) I've only heard it on one other ep (The Fraternity Pin - that was on an old VHS set I bought 10 yrs ago - BTW I understand The Fraternity Pin will be on the new Shout! DVD set due out in July. It's my fav all time ep - watch it when it comes out!)

Another great June and David ep is "Trip Trap" (June bamboozles David into taking a trip to Hawaii!) It's on Disc #12 in The Mill Creek set.

Yep, Dave and June--they were like a spinoff show, while not actually spinning off

oh I will get to all these episodes, believe me!

I actually think the Mill Creek collection has most or all of the episodes that Platinum put on the 20 episode set--if so, I will give that collection to my g/f (another big O&H fan--she LOVES Rick and his music). No use keeping a set if I have all the episodes on the Mill Creek set.

Check the Platinum against The Mill Creek. There may be a few on the Platinum that are not on The Mill Creek. I Think Platinum has "Wally's Traffic Ticket" which is a REALLY FUNNY EP. Have you seen this one?

I'm sure I have, but it has been about a year or so since I've watched the Platinum set. So no harm in keeping that set  Comparing the two--Platinum has Wally's Traffic Ticket, The Randolphs' Niece, Horror for Oz and Any Date in a Storm.

Wally's Traffic Ticket is one of my VERY FAVORITE EPS - very Lucyesque I love all the jokes about the ostrich & that actually worked the bird into an ep!

In all my shopping years, I have NEVER ever come across tutti frutti ice cream. It is a flavor I have only heard about in TV shows, etc.

I haven't seen it commercially but I did find an ice cream parlour in my city that has it . They make their own ice cream. It's called Eddie's Sweet Shop & its in Forest Hills Queens.

Yep, way too often I'm afraid. They also do an interesting twist on Pistachio. It has the flavor but no nuts, instead they put in pineapple. And they make their own whipped cream. But no more for me for a long time. Doc ready me the riot act. Lose weight and eat better or else.

There's also another great ice cream place in a completely other part of NYC in the borough of Brooklyn in Bay Ridge. It's called Hinsch's. They make their own ice cream there too and its really great. But tutti fruitti unf. is not one of their flavors. They serve reg food too but outside of the soups the reg food is nothing to write home about. However re the ice cream....WOW!!!!!!

Since I'm diabetic, it is hard to find good no sugar added ice cream. Also have to watch blood pressure and cholestrol. So uhmmmm, no salt, no sugar, no fat........otherwise, no fun

Wow, we really do have a lot in common.

Not a diabetic yet but my doc says unless I shape up I'm on my way to becoming one. My blood sugar is right outside the normal limit so he says I' might be a Borderline Diabetic. From reading others sites on the condition I know that other terms are more accurate for this state. So he said, lose weight (25 lbs), exercise and totally revamp the way you eat. (And I was eating like sh*t). No more. Now I eat like a Type 2 (a lot of green salad & green veggies). But I may have a sm. scoop of homemade ice cream 1X a mo if I can get a friend to split an order w me. Thank God I don't have a sweet tooth and my cholesterol & sodium are OK so I can have some eggs, lean ham - but am trying not to go overbd here. (If you ever want to discuss diabetes p.m. me - I got a lot of literature from the ADA) Type 2 runs in my family and everyone who got it was overweight & over 50 (e.g. me)

Yes, we do

You may have what is called metabolic syndrome?

I have plenty of info on diabetes (and how did we get from "The Pancake Mix" to this?).
It runs in my family--my older brother had it very bad since he was 18 and he died last July due to complications from being diabetic.

Rich my husband was/is borderline diabetic. My daughter, who sells diabetic supplies, says there's no such thing, you are or you're not, kind of like being a little pregnant. Anyway, he lost 52 pounds, shear will power and me and my daughter fussing about his diet and me cooking sensible meals. He learned to eat out and eat better. He was a big candy eater and coke drinker. Well, he just stopped those things completely. His numbers are great and he eats sensibly and he's doing well. So if you take care of yourself now, you should be fine. I think men have more will power to lose weight than women.

Yes I know the term Borderline Diabetic isn't really an accurate one. There are two glucose tests that are supposed to measure your status. My blood test was something called A1C and was 6.4% - I was told the cut-off for non-diabetics is 6.0)

And I HAVE done a total about face. I have two big salads with each meal (very little dressing) and a lean meat or chicken main course. Broccoli & legumes at least once a day. Dessert is a sugar free yougurt, an apple, or just a little bit of Kashi Go Lean. Trying to lose 1 lb a week. I have cut out reg soda COMPLETELY, no cakes or pies, and juice is 3 oz juice to 9 oz seltzer. I hoping I'll be fine too. If I never see a doughnut again that's fine by me. Thanks for the insights.

Sorry didn't mean to get us off O & H. I'm going to p.m. Janice( a really sweet moderator here and see where its best to post a thread on diabetes @ SO - probably somewhere on Chit Chat.

I have a step cousin who got it as an adolescent. She takes very good care of herself. I know this type of Diabetes is a lot more serious and you have to be on top of it.
