Kids for Carey? No, She'd Feel 'Violated'
(April 23) - Pop superstar Mariah Carey has ruled out having kids of her own some day, saying they would make her feel uncomfortable and points to "traumatic stuff" during her childhood for the decision to remain childless.
The 38-year-old Carey told the UK version of OK! Magazine that having children of her own would leave her feeling "violated," adding "I know that's a kind of weird thing to say, but that's how I am."
"For now I enjoy my dog Jack's company. It's definitely because of childhood traumatic stuff. The whole not wanting to have a baby as a baby." She did not specify what events turned her off on kids. Her parents divorced when she was three years old. "They just fought all the time," she told PEOPLE. (http://www.people.com/people/mariah_carey/biography/0,,,00.html)
The singer, who is in London to promote her new chart-topping album "E=MC2," said she had serious concerns about bringing up a child.
"It's hard to have kids in this world," she told the OK! reporter. "I don't think I could properly educate a child right now. Maybe in the future, but I actually haven't thought about it."
Since her marriage to ex-Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola ended in 1997, Carey has remained single but says she's open to marrying again. With conditions, of course:
"It would have to be someone who would take care of me emotionally and make the effort to understand me deep down, really know who I am, not what I am," she told OK! (http://www.ok.co.uk/posts/view/893/Mariah-I-m-the-Mary-Poppins-of-pop-/) in an April 20 interview.
She said there's a lot of things people don't know about her. "The truth is I'm a freakin' prude," she said. "I've never had a one-night stand."
"I'm Mary Poppins; I'm the embodiment of a buttoned-up girl. Even as a teenager, I was wary of being side-tracked by romance because my ambition and drive to break into the music business always came first."
Look Out Fab Four
Carey is still glowing about passing Elvis Presley with her 18th chart-topping single, "Touch My Body," and is poised to one day overtake the Beatles, who have 20. She said she's trying to stay humble about the whole thing and knows there are great differences between herself and those legendary artists.
"Their music transcended the actual songs; they were instruments of social change, they shaped generations.shaped generations," she told OK!.
Through it all, though, she'll always be Mariah.
According to the New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2008/04/22/2008-04-22_mariah_carey_rules_out_having_kids.html), Carey arrived in the UK "with an entourage of 15 hairdressers, bodyguards and personal stylists and commandeered every penthouse suite in Claridge's, an exclusive Mayfair hotel."
