By Season 3, his role was reduced to maybe a cameo every other episode. The role of Ron Havey as played by Paul Smith was beefed up and given the funnier lines and situations. So no wonder when M*A*S*H* came around he jumped ship! (ok, we all know his leaving that show was a mistake, but not leaving Doris)

he didn't leave "TDDS" voluntarely; he was fired from it.

Really? do you have the info behind the firing?
Was Rose Marie fired from the show as well?

I think I read somewhere that the 2 of them, along with that other guy-I think his name's Paul Smith-were all fired because the characters weren't working out.
Also, I remember seeing McLean hosting "THE TONIGHT SHOW" once back in the 70s-he was a frequent guest host of it back then-and he was talking about it once and saying that he had been fired from it.

Well that is indeed interesting. Rose Marie had nothing but nice things to say on her interview on the Season 2 set and that she is still friends with Doris.
The characters I saw not really working were the Palucci's as played by Kaye Ballard and Bernie Kopell.
