In Mel Brooks's autobio (It's good to be king) he mentions he originally wanted Orson Welles---er Orson Bean to be Maxwell Smart. Bean was Mr. Bevis on a TZ ep of the same name. I don't think he was anywhere near as talented as Don Adams!

True, but, that would have been a better choice than Tom Poston, who was ABC's first choice (he was on contract with the network, who had first rights to buy the show)......when GS went instead to NBC, the network insisted on Don Adams, who had a contract with them.
