View Full Version : This is TV Land's explanation for why It's not the Network it was 10 years ago

TV Rep on the Message Boards stated that TV Land is now a Classic TV Network only because of the reasons below
1. Classic TV Network only wouldn't be able to keep the network afloat
2.Lot of Advertisers and Cab;e/Satellite Providers required that TV Land air more original programming so the network could be saved
3. TV Land can now survive as a Cable network with a combination of original programming, New vintage programming and movies
LOL, thoughts anyone?

it's sad that networks see ratings as something better than being true to themselves. Thank god you see some musicians who won't sell out and work with an emo/hip hop producer because it would guarentee more sales.
If you can't be true to yourself, who the hell are you going to be true to? Nick At Nite shows how crazy they are because they'd rather get 3 million viewers, and 10 million who bitch about how their programming has gone to hell, than 2.5 million viewers who love every single thing they show. It's only the difference of a half million viewers, and the reputation is a world different.

He said that was the original plan for tv land to be classic tv only but it just wasn't pulling in the MONEY

well, I think people forget that QUALITY trumps QUANTITY. Yea, TV Land might pull in 7 million viewers if they aired Seinfeld, but there'd also be 17 million people on the boards bitching about how TV Land went to hell and sold out. Or it could have 3 million with a show that hasn't been seen in decades and people who like and dislike the show both think that the show is worthy for TV Land.
I don't get why people think quantity is always better. Would you rather have a devout fanbase that watches the network religiously or lose that devoted fanbase and have a bunch of people who just flip by the channels and go "hey, it's MASH" and watch, and then flip as soon as it's over? I think quality should matter more. Shows like MASH and Friends may bring in the ratings, but the true TV Land fans are sick of them.

It is a sad state of affairs when the advertisers DICTATE the network and tell them what they should air in order for them to want to be seen on their channel.
What kind of business is that when advertisers tell networks, "Air more original programming and I will consider paying you to air my ads." SEE YA is what the network should tell them.
Are you really serious TVland, that you can't find many sponsors or advertisers who would be willing to be seen on your channel? Do you take us for buffoons or something? If you keep airing the same ol' crap all the time, get rid of these mini-marathons, change the schedule every so often and keep the station "fresh", the ratings would be a lot better and the advertisers can see that an ALL CLASSIC STATION can and does work.

TVLAND WAS AN ALL CLASSIC NETWORK...and it worked for a very long time. How is it any different now? Think abt it. If we have all these channels airing 90's shows and current shows continuously, then wouldn't it be simple to think the need for a classic tv station is wanted? If you have ten restaurants that serve the same kind of food in your city, chances are you are going to visit the one restaurant that serves something different.

Not to mention that TV Land came about because N@N had been so popular and they needed another channel to air all the classics on.

TV Land is not calling itself a classic TV network anymore. They are a baby boomer network. It will have all eras of programming, not just new...so TV Land still fits the title (even though movies air once a week). Even with all these changes, 90% of their line-up is pre-90s. Wings, Just Shoot Me, Designing Women and the originals are newer. Even most of the movies are pre-90s.
Originals were created years back, to gain more sponsors and viewers.

An All-Classic TV network would only work on digital these days (like RTN)...or maybe something like ME-TV for local independent stations on analog or digital. So if TV Land wanted to create "TV Land 2," digital would be the way to go. I would call it "Classic TV Land."

I just think they don't feel the classic shows are hip, that's all. There is an audience for it, they just don't feel it is a marketable audience, that is all. But the question I have for them is how do they feel that airing movies that have been aired a gazillion times on other networks actually brings in new viewers?
The should undergo a name change. Court TV going to Tru TV made more sense too. TV Land should change its name to HODGE PODGE TV because they play an inexplicable mix of crapola when they are not playing classic TV.

IMO. Prime time is only 3 hours a night. So a compromise I'd suggest would be, air the played out shows between 8-11 that get good ratings, and for the other 21 hours a day, air fan favorites. That way everyone is happy. Nick USED to be good like that until they started showing Fresh Prince all night because of the coveted 2:30 am audience
Apparently, the demographics for the 'all-classics' format was not viable anymore to the advertisers (probably 55+), so the change was needed. I don't like it at all, but that's just the way it is. On the bright side, we have networks like RTN (which is rapidly expanding), ION (they will be good for some 70s and beyond), and maybe even Me-TV that have picked up the slack and will eventually be better than TV Land ever was....best of all, they're free. I know some people that used to subscribe to cable of satellite just to get TV Land. IMO, RTN will eventually be much better than TV Land ever was.

It's the same story with all networks. When they start off they have no money so they buy all of this great obscure stuff that no one else wants. Then, once they become more successful and start to make money, they buy all of the same common **** that everyone else runs. It happened with Lifetime, USA, BET, CBN, Nick at Nite all of them. It's even happening now with American Life. They were running all of the great old Warner Brothers shows like 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Surfside Six, Bourbon Street Beat, Lawman, etc. Now they took them off and they are running 70s and 80s shows like China Beach and Lou Grant. They all do it, every single one of them. You have to get these networks when they start, that's the only time they run the good stuff.
As for TV Land being for Baby Boomers or run by Baby Boomers, whoever said that doesn't know what they are talking about. The Baby Boomers were born from 1946 to 1964 with the peak in 1957. As a baby boomer myself, I want to see the shows from the 60s and early 70s. That's when I watched the most television. I couldn't care less about 80s shows and neither do most other boomers I know. Give me all of the rare shows from that era - Good Guys, Governor and JJ, To Rome with Love, Love on a Rooftop, Run Buddy Run, Accidental Family, etc.

SIMPLE: Greedy, sentimental, corprate @$%-holes like Viacom care more about making money from show where people are making @$%-es out of themselves then about what made certain channels hits that they once were.
Here's my question....I know RTN and TV Land are different (one is cable, one is broadcast), but how come RTN seems to be airing the older shows without issue? Seems like they would be in the same boat. The concept seems to be very successful so far, according to what RTN's press releases say. Here's a RTN schedule sample ( one of the better ones, I think; WPXI/Pittsburgh http://www.wpxi.com/download/2008/0208/15255933.pdf )
I wonder if RTN will 'sell out' eventually...

AmericanLife has aired stuff from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s for years. When I got the channel in 2000, they were airing stuff like "The New Dick Van Dyke Show," "Down to Earth," "One Big Family," "Apple's Way," and "Getting By," all short-lived shows from the 1970s-1990s.
And to say that "Lou Grant" and "China Beach" aren't rare stuff...I completely disagree. When was the last time "Lou Grant" aired regularly in reruns? And they've been showing "China Beach" for several years now. The majority of the stuff on AmericanLife is definitely not the type of stuff you'd see on basic cable networks.

So, you started collecting when, 5 years ago? No wonder you feel the need to disparage my collection. You don't have your own, only 5th generation dubs you picked up or shows you taped that are cut up with network logos all over them. I understand the animosity now. As far as I know, no one has rerun that show since it aired on ABC. And that would have been too early for VHS. Someone would have had to have been doing taping with early Beta or 3/4 and that was very expensive.

I think the worst and most dramatic change to a network was VH1. When I first got VH1 on my cable system, I couldn't get enough of it. Behind The Music was just taking off and most of their programming was music or music-oriented in some way. I would watch Behind The Music episodes of artists I didn't even care for, just give me more, more, more!
Now, I never watch it. They should change the name of the network, because it has nothing to do with music anymore. At least The Nashville Network had the decency to change their name to The National Network and now, Spike TV. They realized their programming had changed and their name now reflects that.
I hope TV Land doesn't go the way of VH1 over time.

Yeah seems like reality is taking over the VH1 network

I will say that then-"I love the 70's and 80's" program was very Interesting and that the network deserved a "THUMBS UP" for coming up with that

That's one of the only few reasons I even watch VH1.
That and when they had "The World Series of Pop Culture."

I agree. I love it when they do music and TV related specials and WSOPC. Nowadays it seems as though every time I flip past VH-1, they're showing some reality show. It's just beyond lame now. ohno:
So, as long as you're able to *buy* copies of a show from when it aired in reruns 13 years ago, you shouldn't want to see it on cable.

Remember them days? Ah the memories. I think the last time they aired videos was back when Madonna came out with her single TAKE A BOW. At least that is the last time I remember when VH1 was hyping the hell out of their "Come this September, we will have a new look and feel." Madonna was part of their promotion. It was right after she had her hit TAKE A BOW and the video to go along with it. They had videos and so forth, but little by little it turned to REALITY TV.

No, I wouldn't. Especially since every network now has bugs all over the screen. And I would prefer to see a show that DIDN"T air in reruns 13 years ago.

I remember that. I also remember the promos with Sheryl Crow and Sting. VH1 was still pretty cool in the mid-90's. Behind The Music was the beginning of the end. What I hated is that they should've always followed BTM with a half hour of videos or live performances of the artist. I mean, you just saw their story for an hour, how about now take a listen to the songs which made them popular in the first place?

Yeah, as soon as the BTM made it, that seems to be the turning point. Remember when BTM Milli Vanilli aired and then later that year the guy from the duo died? VH1 played the heck outta that BTM! I think they saw the ratings for that after his death and decided, "Ah ha, this is what people want...reality tv." After that, we were inundated with BTM on so many singers and groups.

I loved the BTM's, much better than the crap they have on now. I just think they should've balanced BTM with videos. It was generally proven that after VH1 would air a Behind The Music, that artists sales would spike that week. Wouldn't it have made sense that after airing an hour of BTM, to follow it up with a block of videos of that artist?
Ireneparalegal

They should have, but didn't. It was the beginning of the end. BTM marathons and endless promos for them. It was a great idea for a show, but it soon became the BTM channel.

I like the rehab show with Dr. Drew, but those tacky "looking for love" shows are pathetic. Flav is so damn ugly but I guess when you have money and a tv show, broads from all over will come flying his way. As for New York, she is one skanky broad and that wuss that she ended up choosing, is deserving of whatever happens to him for wanting her.

How does a channel like AMC earn/make $$$ by airing so few breaks? Seriously, I want to know.
I hope yall mean TCM, and not AMC lol. From what I've watched of AMC recently (not a lot), their commercials come as frequent as any other cable net.
A cable channel that I know of that airs commercials, but always has limited commercial breaks is LMN. They actually edit out commercial breaks in some of the TV movies they rerun. The screen fades to black then goes right back into the movie, just like on DVDs.

It depends on what they would consider "classic TV". If they would air a lot of seldom seen, obscure shows that have never been rerun, yeah, i'd pay for it in a second. If it was going to be all of the shows that are on DVD already and that have rerun in syndication many times, no, I wouldn't care.

I became a classic movie lover watching AMC. I used to look forward every year to their film preservation festival too. I didn't get TCM until 2000 and not long after AMC sold out. I wish I had them both at the same time when AMC was in its prime.

Oh, well maybe this might help you. I remember several years ago when it was on basic, the cable company changed it to digital. Then many of the older customers (mainly senior citizens) complained they wanted to watch that channel but couldn't afford to change to digital. They made an uproar, and lo and behold, the cable company decided to keep TCM on basic and digital to appease the customers who were loyal TCM fans but couldn't afford to switch to digital. That is what happened here, I don't know if that was the reason across the country.

Of all the movie channels out there I wish my cable company would pick up Fox Movie Network. That seems to be the only movie channel I can't get and they always have good movies on it.
I just hope TCM doesn't sell out like AMC did. Their's few places for classic movie lovers to go. AMC doesn't even air all classic movies anymore. Some of their movies are junk.

Same here. All of my favorite movies, I saw for the first time on either AMC or TCM. We've actually had TCM for as long as it's been around, I think. That's strange because we didn't get Sci-Fi until 2000 (it was digital until 2002), GSN until 2000 (still on digital), and TVLand until 2001 (has always been basic).
