LOS ANGELES - When Aretha Franklin is unhappy, she does not mince words. On Tuesday, the longtime Queen of Soul slammed Beyonce Knowles' intro to Tina Turner at Sunday's Grammy Awards, in which Knowles called Turner, not Franklin, "the queen."

"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

E-mails to Knowles' publicist Yvette Noel-Schure and calls and e-mails to Recording Academy spokeswomen Jaime Sarachit and Barb Deghan were not immediately returned.

In the first few seconds of Knowles' intro to Turner's performance, she name-dropped Franklin and a long list of famed female singers. Then the "Crazy in Love" chanteuse focused on Turner.

"There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent," said Knowles, strutting in hot pants. "Ladies and gentlemen. Stand on your feet and give it up for the queen."

At a party later that night, Knowles called Turner her "ultimate icon."

Still, Franklin ended her brief criticism on a gracious note, thanking the Grammys and the voting academy and saying, "love to Beyonce anyway."

Known for such hits as "Respect" and "Chain of Fools," Franklin tied with the Clark Sisters for best gospel performance trophy for her duet "Never Gonna Break My Faith" with Mary J. Blige.

Thank you for that visualization. ;)

I agree, what the hell is going on here? Remember the days when people went to awards shows, they either performed or just went to have a good time. Now, they have the internet and the media at their feet and they decide to "vent" their feelings. Was she under the influence of alcohol perhaps? Is she edgy and cranky because of her diet? Hmmmm.....

I find it funny Aretha would be upset that Beyonce might be a bigger fan of Tina's than her. I mean, Aretha's ass gets kissed more often than ANYONE in the industry, even including The Beatles. She's considered an icon and a queen by so many, so why does it bother her that there are people out there who think Tina is the consumate performer over her?

Can you imagine that happening? Lady Soul arrives at Buckingham Palace for a gala performance. When she hears the words, THE QUEEN, Aretha stands up and soon realizes those words were meant for QE2. Suddenly, Aretha begins to huff and puff and with a swift turn, lunges at her manager and heaves her large bosoms in his face, causing him to suffocate!

I agree. You'd think legends like Aretha would respect a friendly rivalry with someone like Tina or Dionne Warwick or Diana Ross or another black diva who rose to fame in the Kennedy administration. It shows a lack of class for her to lose her **** like that. I mean, if Paul McCartney was at an awards show and someone called The Rolling Stones or The Who their favorite band, I don't think Paul would issue a "who the **** does ____ think he is preferring The Who's music to mine?!!??!". Paul's comfortable in his own skin and can accept that there are people out there who might like other "British Invasion" bands to The Beatles.

I agree. Aretha is in her 60's, her place in music history is secure. Why get so upset that there is room for other legends? I mean, there are people who prefer The Stones and The Who to The Beatles, there are people who prefer Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash to Elvis, there are people who prefer David Bowie and Queen to Elton John, there are people who prefer Prince and Stevie Wonder to Michael Jackson, there are people who prefer Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston to Madonna, etc... You're all legends, why does it matter if someone is more influenced by another rival than you?

Aretha is a great singer, but if it comes down between her and Tina, you can't even compare Aretha to Tina IMO.

Tina and Aretha have their place in history. As women, there should be NO ANIMOSITY regarding "titles". One is soul, the other rocks. I think Aretha should be worried abt her health and how long she will last with all that weight on her, rather than worry what Beyonce said or was told to say.

If I can be honest, I would rather someone knock Whitney for calling Bobby Brown the KING OF R&B, now that was when someone should have stood up and screamed abt that!!!!!

very true, that's why I lost respect for Aretha over this. It's like how Dolly Parton is generally regarded as the queen of country, Madonna is called the queen of pop, Mary J. Blige is labelled the queen of hip hop soul. I figured Aretha had more class than that, she and Tina have both been around for a good fifty years now, I would've figured there was mutual respect between the two of them for the others accomplishments.

Elvis and Michael Jackson are both commonly referred to as "The King", with Elvis Rock and MJ Pop. I've never seen Lisa Marie or anyone else in Elvis' estate complaining when MJ is called the King, because they're kings of different things.

If you see the video, that is what is said by Whoopi Goldberg on The View. However, Beyonce was stating THE QUEEN, not The Queen of Soul. Besides, why should Aretha care who is called what? Is there a clause in her contract that only she be called that? Is it trademarked? Aretha needs to loosen up the girdle a bit there and not make it so darn personal. They are both queens and should leave it at that.

I agree, and I think the labels are stupid and all truly a matter of personal opinion. I mean, Michael Jackson is considered the "King of Pop", but there are probably people out there who feel that Elton John or Paul McCartney deserves the title more. I think who is "King" and "Queen" should be all your personal preference.

I just find it funny that Aretha is that insecure that she can't handle someone thinking Tina is better than her. Aretha's butt has been kissed for years by fellow r&b and pop divas and critics, and she was the first female in the Hall Of Fame, she should be secure about her accomplishments that it won't bother her if someone thinks that Tina is better.

Maybe Aretha would have been happy had Tina been called the Queen of Domestic Violence.

I mean, really, what does THE QUEEN really mean? It could mean a generalization of all the ladies in the music business and Tina having been the one to start the ball rolling for ladies in rock & roll. People back then assumed a black woman could sing only blues or R&B, but Tina proved a black woman can sing all of that and then some. ;)

I haven't read much of this thread, but I just want to say that Aretha Franklin has been The Queen of Soul since the 60s. That is an indisputable fact. Just like Elvis is The King. Some things are what they are, like it or not.

I agree. Aretha is/was a great vocalist, but I always thought Tina brought so much more when she'd step out onstage. Yes, she's getting up there in age so she's not like she used to be, but Tina was an electrifying presence on the stage. I saw her live on her farewell tour in 2000 and while I expected a great show, was more than surprised at just how good a show she was able to put on at 60. It wasn't a heavily choreographed lipsynched extravaganza like Cher's shows, Tina worked the stage and never stayed still for two hours. She made sure the audience got every pennies worth.

Aretha OTOH is a great singer (but so is Tina), but has always been a boring live performer from clips I've seen. I think this is a reason why Tina's tours were always events that were sold out and some of the biggest tours of their respective years, while Aretha played smaller theaters because she couldn't pack them in.

true, but Tina has been considered the Queen Of Rock as far back as I recall. I remember watching an HBO special on her when I was a kid in the 80's and they were calling her the Queen of Rock And Roll. I just wish Aretha didn't make this issue public. If she felt the need to vent, then vent privately. What good comes of this to have said her beef to the media? It sounds petty and she sounds bitter. The two ladies are queens and neither needs a title. A title means squat IMHO. Aretha is putting too much empasis on this. Like I said, unless she has a clause in her contract regarding the title, who the hell cares? Aretha, just keep on singing, get your health back and let it go.

Google, Queen of Soul, and see what you come up with. Endless pages of nothing but Aretha Franklin. Google, Queen of Rock and Roll, and you get a mixed bag, but nothing as definitive as Aretha's title.

If you've got Aretha Franklin in a room, out of respect, you should be a little more careful about how you use the word Queen. Beyonce should have been more specific. Aretha's title is more established than Tina's. God's honest truth, this is the first I heard about Tina's Queen title. Everyone and their mother's mother's knows that Aretha Franklin is The Queen of Soul. Tina, not so much. Nothing to do with talent, just respect for Aretha's title.

I wouldn't be surprised if she did trademark it, lol. People trademark everything these days. I can understand her feelings being hurt. Whoever wrote the introductions, should have been more accurate, to both Tina and Aretha. Blame it on the writer's strike.

Still, Aretha sounds petty going public with it. Her title, like you say, is almost an extension of her name, so she shouldn't be insecure about it. I think she has the most well-known title in the music business. On par with The King. Those two titles, EVERYONE knows. Anyone over 25, with a pulse, lol.

I think Aretha and Tina are both queens, but ReRe forgets that she and Tina are two totally different styles of music, even if they are both black women pushing 70 who came out when Ike was president. Aretha's roots are gospel and soul, Tina's always been more rock and pop (even in the 60's with Ike, she wanted to work with the Stones over Motown artists, and don't forget her role in Tommy by The Who). I don't think Tina would get upset if someone calls Aretha queen, I think same should apply with Tina being queen. Tina being "Queen of Rock n Roll" is just as entitled to being called "The Queen" as Aretha is being Queen of Soul. Just like Elvis and Michael Jackson both are "The King"

I've probably been to 20-30 concerts in my life, I've seen Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Cher, Janet Jackson, U2, Jewel, Aerosmith, Sting, etc.... tons of great entertainers, but I'd say that until I saw Prince last summer (as a live performer, Prince is second to none IMO), Tina was the greatest concert I ever saw. She performed well into midnight and even after 2 1/2 hrs the fans didn't want her to go. I'd always liked Tina but after I saw her in concert, my appreciation for her deepened, and yes, she is the Queen of Rock IMO.

I can't wait for Michael Jackson's complaint about Aretha stealing MJ's moves.... :p Really, this has been one celeb fight after another. Come to think of it, in 2001, he was complaining to Sony that his Invincible album didn't sell and he used the race card issue.

if Aretha hates Tina so much. Why, oh why did she record this song in 1986?

If "Another Night" wasn't an attempt to cash in and mimic Tina's success in the mid-1980's, I don't know what is.

The media is making things up, I highly doubt that Aretha is upset over some Beyonce said. Come on now

Did you see the link to the video Brieannas? It is on the previous page. Beyonce's dad responded back as well in that video.

Yes I saw it, I still think that the media is making a big deal out of nothing. I seriously doubt that Aretha was soooooooooooooo upset about anything that Beyounce had to say. It's Beyounce for goodness sake

I agree. It's been blown out of proportion by the scandal hungry media. Aretha made a simple remark over how she felt. She ended it with "love to Beyonce" or whatever. There's no reason for all this venom being hurled her way. The fat remarks are disgusting. Chit Chat has really gone downhill, in terms of adults being unable to discuss celebrity issues without tearing them apart, limb by limb. I'm actually on the lookout for a site where members have civil and mature discussions, and not act like bullies in a schoolyard. I say this to you Brieanna, because you're one of the few members whom I enjoy discussing issues with. We all make jokes, but this is nuts, and only getting worse. If anyone knows of a site that's not all trashing and bashing, I'd love to know about it.

I know, it get to the point where it is just annoying. After a while, you just lose interest in the thread because of the immaturity of others.

Musicians are getting very touchy nowadays.

Considering how the music industry is going downhill in terms of album sales and fan apathy, I would think they would be happy that people still remember who they are.

LOL@Aretha getting mad at Beyonce for calling Tina Turner a queen instead of her hahahahahahahahahaha. LOL@some of ya'll dissing Aretha's weight hahahahahahahahahaha. She is a big woman and she needs to lose weight. She can't stop eating LOL. Aretha, Monique, Chaka Khan should hang together and go to as many restaurants as they can hahahahahahahahaha. I hate to diss Chaka's weight because i love her and i've seen some old pictures of her when she was skinny and she looked good. I guess she can't stop eating too and that's why she's picked up so much weight. LOL@the person who said Aretha must have in her contract that people have to call her the queen of soul hahahahahahahahahaha. 88survivor i remember Michael Jackson playing the race card when Invincible album didn't sell. He tried to blame Mariah Carey's ex husband Tommy Mattola who worked at Sony records. What's Tommy's job position at Sony? Michael also got Al Sharpton to try to talk to these record companies about how they treat black artists LOL. Most black artists don't know how to read their record contracts and that's why so many of them get taken advantage of with their money especially rappers because you know most of them are stupid LOL. The reason why Michael's Invincible album didn't sell is because he's weird and blacks who used to support him don't like him anymore because he's weird. Even white people who used to support him sees that he's weird and they stopped buying his albums. So Michael has nobody to blame but himself for his records not selling anymore.

Do you have any idea how stupid and degrading that sounds? How the hell do you know the education level of these artists? I'll say this much, at least they're out there making money which is what you should be doing instead of constantly berating members of your own race and complaining about not having a better job.
