In 4 hours I will be at the dentist. I'm a bit nervous and starving since I can't eat before surgery. Any advice after it's all done?

Even if you're not in pain, take Advil ASAP. That way you can avoid it in the first place. That's what I did when I had 2 of mine done. I'm going to have the others soon.

I agree. Advil was the only thing that helped me with the pain, and it worked well. The doctor suggested that I take 3 at a time.

Make sure the doc prescribes hydrocodone (vicodin). It'll come in handy after the fact.
Don't be horrified when you open your mouth and see a murder scene on your tongue. When I woke up after having mine pulled, my tongue was dry as hell and tasted funny. I didn't find out why until I got to a mirror.
You'll enjoy the hydrocodone... don't suck through a straw... listen to what your body tells you as far as eating foods. I was eating solids within 8 hours of having my teeth pulled. Heh. Good luck! I hope everything goes smoothly. :)
Am I the *only* one who never had anything other than a very mild burst of pain right afterward. (And that was without getting knocked out). I hurt just a tiny bit after the anesthesia wore off, took a couple Aleve, and it didn't hurt again.
But yeah, pain pills are your friend. :-) (I was prescribed Vicodin/hydrocodone too, but never took it. Don't know why [this was a couple years before I started watching House, too...])

 House pops 'em like candy. Hee. I wonder if he actually takes extra-strength hydrocodone... these guys are amazing.
Mmm. I want hydrocodone again...

I had all 4 of mine taken out over Labor Day weekend 1997. That was no fun.

I had the first two done when I was in my 20's and they had to do some cutting to get them out. That was a longer recovery, way more pain, and a lot of eating from a blender for days. Then a few years later I had the other two taken out and they were just pulled out. What a difference! Almost no pain afterwards and I had fried chicken for dinner that night (I had it done early morning). So if you're just getting them pulled it could be smooth sailing for you once you take your Advil. I bet you are since they're doing all four at once. I bet it won't be too bad.

Good Luck! My son is supposed to have 2 wisdom teeth taken out this summer, & he's not looking forward to it either.

My doctor suggested 4. Only thing that worked. I got a script for Tylenol 3 and it made me sick.

Oh god...I was so sick of blender food, jello, and ice cream. I never wanted solid food so bad in my life.

Yeah, I got Vicodin, and it did nothing for me.

I was like you, I had no trouble. Took 4 Advil the first day and that was it. I was up that night eating soup. And mine were laying on their sides inside my gums, they had to dig them out.

Ouch!!
Two of mine had roots that were all funky-looking on the X-rays, so I'm sure it was no easy feat to get 'em out.
My mouth feels SOOOOOO much better w/ no wisdom teeth, though. THey were causing me a lot of trouble. :(

hope it went well. i got mine pulled out last summer. the process itself went so well that when i woke up i asked if they were done because it didn't feel like they'd done anything at all (even though my mouth was full of wadded tissues and it was too numb to feel them so i was seriously wondering why i couldn't speak well), but then i had to keep taking painkillers for about a week afterward.
it unexpectedly fixed a problem i'd had for a long time with my jaw locking and not being able to open very wide.

Thanks everyone. It went well, my mouth is sore but I'm not in pain. I'm afraid to look in my mouth. The dentist said I can brush today but I only brushed my front teeth. I took one Vicodin last night. I did have a spot of blood on my pillow this morning. Already I'm getting sick of soup and oatmeal. But I can relax now and recover.

Just don't suck on anything (straws, popsicles, etc). Keep rinsing with warm salt water (don't spit it out - let it fall out of your mouth). Do that as often as possible - it REALLY helps speed up the healing.
The worst I found was the taste of blood in my mouth and the bad breath it gives you but that only lasts a couple of days.
You can also try mashing a potato (or instant) and mushing up a soft boiled egg into it. It's very tasty and helps get a bit more protein into you that you need.
Cream of Wheat is also a bit of a break from oatmeal. Cream soups are also good.
I'm really surprised they did all 4 at once - most dentists will only do two at a time. My girlfriend had 4 out at the same time and she was swollen so badly that her eyes were shut for two days. It looked like she went 13 rounds with Tyson.

Wow, all 4 at once. I've never heard of that either, but when i need mine out i'd rather just take them all out at once and get it over with. I'm going to need mine out because they keep bothering me, and i'm freaked out but i'm glad to read some of you had success stories of them lol. I got some teeth pulled when i was 8 and i was traumatized because i could hear them cracking when the dentist was pulling on them.

I was under the assumption that having all four taken out is common. Get it all done in one shot, rather than going back twice to have it done. Yuk!
This was me the day after I had all 4 of mine pulled last year. Note that I have no chipmunk cheeks AT ALL. I just look a little drugged up. I seriously had the most beautiful recovery period ever.

Yeah, having 4 done at a time isn't really common, and some dentists feel its too invasive and dangerous so they break it up a bit.
Anyway - you do look great - I was more swollen than that, but luckily didn't bruise that much.

It's from over a year ago  I had it done on 19 January 2007 and that pic is from the 20th.
I went to this AMAZING facial surgery institute here in town. Just... damn. Great docs, everything. I'd heard about them through my grandma, who highly recommended them. Damn! If I ever need extensive work on my teeth down the road, I am so going back to them again.
My stepsis had her wisdoms pulled in '04 and she spent two days wearing this special plastic headgear that had pockets on either side for putting in ice and water, because her face swelled up after the surgery. I was hoping it wouldn't happen to me. And it didn't. Phew.

I had mine taken out in summer 97. I was confined to bed for about 3 days and ate nothing but soup, if I tried to get up and move around, I'd get nauseas

LOL yeah all I ate when I had all 4 pulled was Spagatti O's, mashed potato's, Campbells chicken noodle soup. What made it even worse I was really really craving a burger!

I have been rinsing with warm salt water after I eat. I'm on soft foods now. I'm just glad it's over.

I had mine taken out in September 2006, and I recovered from it just a week later, so I'm sure you will too.
