The home of the Cleveland Indians will be called Progressive Field as part of a naming rights deal that is worth nearly $58 million over 16 years.

Car insurance company Progressive Corp. and the Indians announced the terms of the agreement for the 42,000-seat downtown ballpark Friday.

The stadium had been known as Jacobs Field since it opened in 1994, named when the team had been owned by Cleveland-area businessman Richard Jacobs.

There are way too many stadium and arena name changes that I can't keep track on what is what anymore.

Here is an opinion from an average Northeast Ohioan:

BOO!!!!!!!

It doesn't matter what THEY say - I will still be calling it Jacobs Field/the Jake, like I still call the other place Gund Arena. Thank goodness we still have CLEVELAND BROWNS STADIUM!!!

That's around the corner - have you seen the size of the average fan who goes to Browns' games??  Seriously - I think THIS is the way all sporting venues should go: http://www.sports-venue.info/NFL/Cleveland_Browns_Stadium.html

The city chose not to sell the naming rights to the stadium itself; this is very unorthodox for major American stadiums built in recent years. However, the naming rights to all four of the facility's gates were sold. The names of the gates are Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Gate located in the Southwest corner, National City Gate located in the Southeast corner, STERIS Gate located in the Northeast corner, and FirstEnergy Gate is located in the Northwest corner of the stadium.

I hate that stadiums are being taken over by corporations and slapping their stupid names on them. This sh*t better not ever happen to Dodger Stadium!!! :snob:

I'm bummed that Cleveland is selling out their stadium names to the highest bidder - some Indians employees also lost their jobs so more cash would be ponied up to pay for the rights to the Progressive name.   I never thought Cleveland would sell out that way.

The Yankees will never do it either. At least I hope not.

Some of my most vivid memories as a teenager are of the Indians' incredible run on the mid-90s, which also coincided with the opening of The Jake, and taking in games there with my family or the church youth group. I will never call it anything else BUT The Jake. So there. :snob:

Let's hope not for sure. This is ludicrous and outrageous.

I boycott any company that puts their name on a sports stadium.... and i refuse to call Skydome "Rogers Centre"!!! The biggest SIN was replacing the historic MONTREAL FORUM with the "Molson Centre" (Now Bell Centre)....75+ years of hockey history stomped on by selfish corporate interests!!!!

Will this make the team win anything this year?

Good question - I guess we'll just have to wait and see what this money will bring to the team.

You think that's bad. Comiskey Park, the White Sox' home was renamed U.S. Cellular Field a few years back. :barf: I still haven't gotten over THAT one.

If they use that money to resign CC Sabathia, I will forgive them. If not...

Oh, I hear you...I'm a White Sox fan myself. :)

But it's just a matter of time before every stadium has a dumb corporate name. It's just too hard for these teams to turn down the insane amounts of money these corporations are willing to pay.
