View Full Version : If you have car problems, DO NOT GO TO MIDAS!!!

 Midas: :yousuck:!!!!!

Let me start this rant off by telling you all, I AM LIVID. I AM STEAMED. I AM INCENSED. If you could see me now, you'd see smoke coming out of my ears.

To make a long story short, I've had problems with the power steering on my car. Over the past couple of weeks, my 1994 Jetta GL III has been back and forth from Midas to the VW dealer my brother works at. Last night we took the car to Midas to have a new steering rack put in. Since my dad has done the lion's share of dealing with the mechanics (even though I pay for gas and upkeep, the car is still in my dad's name and he pays the insurance), he's told me how the mechanics there have given him a bit of a rough time.

Case in point: Dad picked me up from work and we drove straight to Midas, as it is only a couple of miles away from my job. The mechanic was pretty curt as we walked in. No hellos or any greetings of any kind. I kind of walked around in the lobby area as they commiserated. The guy was curt from the moment we came in, but things came to a head when he wanted my dad to sign a form. My dad asked what the form was for, when the mechanic kept saying, "just sign it, just sign it" several times.

My dad said, in a NORMAL, calm tone of voice, "this is crap". The mechanic then JUMPED down Dad's throat, and accused my dad of cussing out him and his mechanics and belittling their work.

That is complete and utter NONSENSE. My dad is a Christian man who has NEVER, EVER cursed out ANYONE!!! He's also a teacher and has dealt with PLENTY of unpleasant situations, and never cussed out anyone there. Nor has he done it anywhere else!! I've only heard him cuss a handful of times in my life, and they were all in our house, usually if he's dropped something or hurt himself in some way.

Then this creep has the audacity to threaten to call the cops on my dad and my dad wasn't even the one yelling!! My dad was upset of course, but he was more shocked than anything at the venom this guy let loose at him! So was I, of course. We finally got in the cars and left. I still can't believe it.

First thing tomorrow I am contacting both Midas' corporate headquarters and the Cleveland BBB. NO ONE is going to slander my father and not hear from me about it. The NERVE!! Plus, you think this creep would have the decency not to scream in a small lobby area at a customer with a woman in the room. You'd think he'd have that small shred of decency. Then again...ticked:

My dad has had enough problems. Since his full-time job was downsized in 2005, he's had to make a living doing odd substituting gigs. He doesn't often know from day to day if he'll be working or not. Plus, he needs to keep doing it for 4 more years so he can get full retirement benefits. He's had a dry spell lately. My brother and I pay rent and help where we can, but we have bills of our own to pay, too. My mother doesn't get a super amount of money from her retirement, either. We don't need this crap. Please, everyone, take your car repair business elsewhere!

Here's to you, Midas: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

Because we had a guarantee, they had to pay the $$ for the steering rack. This jerk got in my dad's face and screamed, "because of you, our company had to eat $400!!" then a few minutes later said $600. The creep can't even get his numbers right!!! :angryfire

Oh i agree with you about Midas, I made the mistake of getting my mufflers and pipes there for 15 years, they never seemed to fit right, I usually had to bring the car back 2-3 times before it all worked right (I figured this was probably common with replacement parts and didnt worry about it ), and then, a year later, maybe days after the waranty was done , the pipes rusted through, so, you had to buy all new just a year later....I finally decided to try Speedy instead, not only do they get the pipes to fit right the FIRST time, its been 3 YEARS since I've had to replace anything they instaled!!!! MIDAS SUCKS!!!

OMG!!! How horrible and disgusting to read what happened to both of you. Sounds like the guy was already sh*tting bricks for some other reason and decided to take it out on the next customer...you and your father.
I bet he got an earful from a supervisor or some corporate person abt something that particular Midas is not doing right and he was pissed. My guess, I don't know, but no matter his "reason" that was total nonsense to treat anyone like that. I am sorry it happened to you two. I feel for you two and I hope you follow up for sure abt the BBB and the corporate headquarters. Jerk-offs like that bastard think no one will actually complain abt them, much less go to the trouble that you will. If more people did that, you bet your bottom dollar workers would think twice before going off on a customer. I hope he gets his but good!!!

I think I'D be a better mechanic! I worked in sales for over 8 years and would NEVER have treated anyone like that, ever!! I had some customers who drove me crazy, but I would stay calm.

I'll ask around, plus I'm telling everyone I know NOT to go to Midas. I'd rather get a root canal - with no anesthetic!!!

I had good luck at a Meineke muffler shop. They put dual exhausts on my (former) '66 Dodge Dart GT V-8.
I was very satisfied... the pipes never hit against anything under the car and it didn't rust.

That's awful. To treat people that way and to not feel the least bit guilty about it, wow! I don't understand how people can be that way. How wonderful of you to help your father like that. :) My guess is if he keeps treating customers like that, he won't be at the job much longer.

I've always had good luck at Car-x. I think it's a chain... Anyway, the guys there have always been friendly and honest about what they're doing to your car. One mechanic took me back into the shop and showed me why he wanted to put new brakes on, not just saying so and hoping I was a sucker. They even have web coupons.

Okay, I checked, and there are Car-x in these Ohio towns:

CINCINNATI

DAYTON

FAIRFIELD

KETTERING

MASON

MILFORD

MONTGOMERY

SHARONVILLE

SPRINGDALE

WEST CHESTER

Monika:

Try Monro Muffler/Brake. It is, or at least used to be, owner of the Speedy chain. (There is--was?--a Monro location in Dayton that offers Speedy service.) There are several locations in northeast Ohio, including Painesville and Ashtabula. It's on the Web at www.monro.com (http://www.monro.com/).

I hope this helps!

Sorry you & your dad had such a terrible experience. We've never been to Midas and certainly wouldn't go there now. I had to have a new dual exhaust system put on my 84 Cutlass a while back, it cost $295 at a local muffler shop in our town. So far, no problems, but you never know what you'll run in to when dealing with mechanics. Somehow you managed to get a bad one.

I haven't found a mechanic I'm comfortable with yet. I take my truck to a place called Kwik Kar for fluid changes. They've been great! exceptional service, from both the receptionist and the mechanics. I just don't know how competent they'd be to handle a real problem.

I forgot to ask if they do diagnostics. That would be so cool if they did!

I've never taken my car to Midas and after your story, I'll know never to in the future!! I hate taking my car to any mechanics anyway. Maybe it's me, but I just feel like, if you're a female getting your car fixed, you get treated differently(and not in a good way), than if you are a male.

That reminds me of a Dane Cook bit where he's talking about taking his car to a mechanic and the mechanic tells him "We had to replace the whole roof of your car, it was peeling back in resentment from the rest of the car, and we also found a tiny unicorn poking holes in your gas tank and ****ing in your filters."

I miss the Tuffy shops that were in my area. I remember having them replace most of the exhaust system for only about $60 on my old car years ago. Midas was always extremely high-priced by comparison, but I have to say that they both did good work.

I recommend Big O Tires for routine stuff. My local shop accepts competitors' coupons. Their own deals are good too.

I was a loyal customer of Big O Tires several years ago and the only reason I stopped going to them is because we moved and it was getting to be too much of a hassle to go. However, I do have a story. My gas gauge was really low and my car died. I took it in, expecting them to tell me that I had some terrible problem with it. Turns out when I called to check on it, they told me that I only owed them $5. I was like  The mechanic said that the car was just out of gas. I told him that I knew that, but that something else must have been wrong. It wasn't. They only charged me $5 for the gas, which was completely amazing. A company that doesn't try to rip off their customers. Imagine that!
Oh and by the way, obviously them filling up my car for only $5 was a VERY long time ago!

Schmoopie that's an interesting story. I'm not sure if this applies to newer cars, but on an old one it was not a good idea to ever let the amount of gas in the tank run very low -- because I think particles would settle and clog the fuel filter (?).

I should also mention that Discount Tires was good to me. Having only bought a couple of tires from them in the past, they later repaired a tire for me on a totally different car -- at no charge.

catlover79, thank you for your story and I wouldn't ever go to Midas again either. I do think they are fooling some people by putting warranties on the least expensive parts and then playing up the prices on everything else that fails. You might get a free muffler, but you'll pay through the nose for the system!
