I'm not a very religious person, but I do believe in God. A few month's ago, a televangelist grabbed my attention. Her name is Joyce Myer. Her talks are very uplifting and inspiring. As her bio here indicates, she had an abusive father, and an abusive first husband, and is a breast cancer survivor.

If anyone wants to her speak, here's her site. She doesn't talk constantly about God. She chooses a few scriptures, then just talks normally. She can be very funny at times.

Please, this thread is for preachers that you enjoy and why, not to rehash old preacher scandals. That can be another thread, if you must.

Great thread Janice!

Joel Osteen for me. The man seems to be filled with the Holy Spirit. His words can really help motivate you.

I agree, I really like Joel. Also, Mr. Billy Graham, a wonderful man! And thoough he's not a preacher, I enjoy listening to James Dobson from Focus On The Family. I actually met him and had my picture taken with him once.

I agree.

However, while she wasn't technically a preacher (since she was the wife of one), I loved Tammy Faye and was saddened when I saw her on Larry King a few months ago and then by her death days later.

Joel Osteen for me too. I think he's fantastic! I have one of his books and really enjoyed it as well. He's one I'd go see if he ever comes to my town. His preaching is uplifting and fun... never found myself thinking "when is this going to be over!"

I can't stand most televangelists, but I tune into Joe Osteen every week. I agree with other posters here: his sermons are uplifting and enjoyable, instead of "You're all going to hell!" which is what some preachers seem to say. (At least, IMO!) Plus the fact, I think he's adorable w/ his southern accent and all. (Yeah, I know he's married and has kids, but hey, I can look, can't I? hehe)

I like Joel Olsteen too; he's just very inspiration and is all about making people better and become closer to God. I also like T.D. Jakes, Juanita Bynum (the woman who was attacked by her husband earlier this year) and Paula White...and my own pastor, lol.

I've always enjoyed listening to Billy Graham - when his crusade came to Cleveland in 1994, I went to see it with my youth group. A little closer to home, the pastor and vicar of my church help inspire me, too. The Lord is truly alive in both their hearts!

I liked Tammy Faye too. She was a sweet lady with a true Christian heart. And it was a hoot seeing her all decked out in that make up. Surprised John Waters didn't get her in a movie. I miss her.

there not televangalesit (sorry, i know i butchered that spelling) To be honest, I don't like most of the ones on TV... they get on my nerves. (Sorry--Even Ol' Joel and Joyce)

I love listening to Franis Chan, David Platt, and Perry Noble. You can find all their sermons line... they're very real. They don't sugar coat the gospel. They're just awesome speakers.

I can't stand Osteen! There's just something about the man I don't like. He makes a lot of sense and I agree with him on a lot of things, but I just don't trust him. He's a smooth talker. He caries himself as a salesman. I don't like him. Of course, I may just be bias.

I don't really like being preached to. I don't like to be told I'll go to hell, I don't like to have someone else's translation of the scripture forced upon me. I am not receptive to most preachers. I suppose I was once, but that was some time ago.

I love God, but I've had it with religion.

I admit, I've found some of the old Fulton J. Sheen programs (reran every now and then on EWTN) somewhat interesting. Otherwise, no.

In the seventies, I listened to Rex Humbard, Oral Roberts and Billy Graham on television. I continued listening to Mr. Graham until he retired and still listen to his son, Franklin. There's a local preacher, Pastor Buddy Pigg, whose radio
broadcast I listen to every time I get a chance. I taped some broadcasts. He is a very good preacher. He gets his point across, often with some humor.
A good sermon can be uplifting, especially if one is going through some tough
times. It's unfortunate that, for most people (myself included), about the only time we turn to God is in times of trouble. What we should do (and often
forget) is to thank Him for the times when we are blessed.

Janice I love Joyce Meyers. She is such an inspiration to everyone who has had a hard life coming up. She is proof that you can overcome anything with God. I am a partner with her ministry and are currently reading her book The Penny. It is based on her childhood. You should pick it up.

I also love Joel Osteen. He's the best. Always looks on the bright side of things. They are my two favorite.

Janice, I love Joyce Meyer! I grew up with her, so to speak. She's from Fenton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, and I grew up in St. Louis. She started out in one of the local churches and I used to go see her there for years. She and her husband Dave have had dinner at my parents' house. (You think she's funny on tv...you should have dinner with her!)
She is sooo much more than a televangelist! She is a living, breathing, spirit who just happens to spread her message on tv of late among so many other ways. She is sincere and she sugar coats nothing...she tells you exactly how it was for her and how she came out of some of the things that she did. She keeps the human factor in it and makes it so you can relate. I know a lot of people in St Louis who work for her as well, and they can't say enough about the workplace she provides and the employment with her in general. She really is one of the real ones.
I like Joel Osteen and Billy Graham too, but I don't know them personally.

I've always liked Robert Schuller (father especially, but his son is good too).

Back in the 80s I used to sit in disbelief at Jim and Tammy Bakker. Still cannot stand Jim but I grew to love Tammy. She ended up showing what to me, a real Christian should be and I hope she's resting comfortably at the makeup counter in heaven.

Ever notice that Joel Osteen looks a LOT like Tim Allen? I saw his pic in People this week and thought it was an old photo of Tim The Toolman!

OMG!! I would love to have dinner with Joyce Meyer. You can tell by her preaching that she is the real deal. How lucky you are :) The next time that she's in North Carolina I am going to attend a conference. I also would love to meet Dave. They are proof that opposites do attract.

I was a big fan of Robert Schuller back about twenty years ago, and he has a number of very inspiring books. I met him at a book signing back in 1986, and it was a great time. I was also a big fan of Norman Vincent Peale and a number of others. Haven't heard too much of Joel Osteen, but he seems
like a decent guy, from what I've heard. I need positive preachers, I'm sick to death of hellfire-and-brimstone preachers, we've dealt with too much guilt and humiliation. We need comfort, encouragement, and building up. The Gospel means 'good news', and some of these other preachers are all about making people feel bad.

If I want to hear about hellfire and brimstone, I'll listen to my heavy metal albums. :D

Joyce really is something. I'm religious, but not overly so, and that's what I like about Joyce. It's like she's having a chat, and is just so down-to-earth. It's getting to be an after dinner ritual with me and my husband, watching her show online. I sometimes catch it at 6 am, on sleepless nights, or if I'm up early. I have to check and see if it's on at a reasonable hour. It's very nice that her children are involved in the ministry too. I watched her this morning, and they were in India. Some of the stories really choked me up.

Her book, The Penny, is on my list, tanquant. Another one of her many books, I Dare You, looks interesting, as well. Thanks for the recommendation. And lucky you bingbang, actually having dinner with her! She was just saying how everyone shunned her back in 1976, when she decided to preach....friends, family, her own church. She said nobody would have lunch with her, and now she couldn't live long enough to have lunches with people who want to. She cracks me up sometimes. I love how she mocks whiners and complainers.

I do want to give Joel Osteen a listen, from what most everyone is saying about him.

I remember her talking about those days too. She was at Life Christian Center in St Louis a lot in the 80's and early 90's, and that's where we used to see her. That's also before she was "national" and you could have her for dinner. She travels half the year now, but she's still close to those that were with her in those early years. After my parents retired from their full time jobs they went to work a couple days a week in her distribution center to help fill their time. If you ever ordered anything by phone or online, you might have gotten my mom taking your order and my dad might have packed your order (or any one of several people I know, for that matter!)
She's on at a little more of a decent hour on Saturdays here where I live. I think it's around 9am. I work Saturdays so I don't ever get to see her at that time, but occasionally on a day off I think I've seen her on then.

Most definitely. His attitude is he won't preach at you abt your sins and so forth, there is enough negativity in the world, let me preach to you abt happiness, love, joy and so forth. I love that.

Robert Schuller is another who I favor.

I miss Tammy Faye. :(

Me too. She was such a sweetie pie. I hope when she arrived at the pearly gates, Estee Lauder and Coco Chanel came running up with great big hugs and overflowing gift baskets of their best stuff...so Tammy Faye could have a blast. She sure loved makeup, God rest her soul.

I'm not much into listening to preachers on TV but I find myself watching Joel Osteen, too.

There's also somebody else who I think is one of our local stations. Her name is Melissa Scott. Anybody ever hear of her? Now I'm heterosexual but the thing that struck me about her is that she is so attractive. Not to say that female preachers can't be attractive but I bet if she was out in public in regular clothes, she would definitely get hit on.

I also must say I really like what Vintage21 (http://www.vintage21.com) is doing. They call themselves an Acts 29 Ministry. :)

My first exposure to them was a few years ago when a guest pastor came to our my church and showed this hilarious video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceIOmIBN4lw) that exposes people's misconceptions about Jesus.

I like both Shullers, father and son, plus Arthur Caliandro from Marble Collegiate Church in New York City (his predecessor was Norman Vincent Peale). Rev. Caliandro is not on TV that much. I think his sermons air on WOR radio in New York City every Sunday. But his sermons are on the site for his church. marblechurch.org

I also like Joyce Meyer and Joel Osteen. First Joyce: She is able to identify with the problems people are going through, because she has been there herself. She is very effective at using self-deprecating humor to bond with her listeners. With Joel Osteen, well, he is a self-described encourager. And I think he's very good at it. That's his thing. I like how he stresses how the words we use and our mindsets influence our lives. I think there is something to that.

Paula White's messages also have impacted me for the better. (If you look beyond the obvious fact that she's quite attractive, and her preaching gets emotional, yet there is much substance in her message. She really does a great job of encouraging people and giving them hope that they can change their lives, no matter what their circumstances are or have been.

Having said all this, first, some of the above people I think have taken a bad rap, and been unfairly criticized and scrutinized (in the media, or by government). They are human, fallible individuals and they'd be the first to admit it. And hopefully we are not all caught up in them personally, but insofar as their message points us to God, and how to live better (even though they are not perfect themselves), then it's a good thing.

Wayne Dyer is very good too but he's more into the Tao more than christianity even though he is a christian as well. He's a flexible preacher I guess you could say!!!
