I had a Dell laptop once. It died about 6 months after I got it...Essentially had the same problems Seth pointed out. Above and beyond that, mine also was extremely prone to overheating to the point it would shut off after about a half hour-hour of use.

Worthless piece of crap. Never again.

I have 3 Dells, one I bought 5 years ago and it still works great, and the other two I bought a year ago and they both still works great. I think every computer company has some kind of problem with their computers. No computer or company is perfect.

I bought a HP desktop before I bought my laptops and that thing didn't even last a year. It actually started to smoke and pop

I bought a Dell laptop in 2004. It was completely dead by 2005. Thinking it might have just been a problem with their low-end models, I bought a upper-middle end machine in 2005. It's lasted 2 years, but as I've firmly documented on here - it's now failing as well. I managed to get a replacement adapter, which has...prolonged...the time that this 2nd one is working. But the AC Adapter connector *is* gradually getting looser. (And this time I KNOW it's not the adapter as said adapter is brand new)

I hope you bought a *long* warranty, Holly. Unless you're one of the few lucky ones, you're going to *need* it.

Seth, My Warranty is for a year is that long enough?

Unless you're lucky, not by a long shot.

The warranty on my current machine was 2 years (September 29th 2005 to September 29th 2007 to be precise). And I wish I'd sprung for the three or four year warranty. The old adage about products failing right after the warranty ends is doubly true for Dell.

Can't help you with the laptops (I don't care for them myself), but I have a Dell desktop that has been running for 9 years nearly. I'm using the original monitor, computer, speakers, and keyboard; the only thing that didn't come with it is the mouse. Wonderful computer and I don't plan on getting a new one - it accomplishes everything I need it to. Never been in the shop once.

Not sure how their newer models are.

I also have a dell desktop. It has been working fine. I've had it for 2 years. I also have the same speakers, monitor, and keyboard.

Holly, I also bought my daughter a dell laptop for christmas. What kind did you get? Like you my warranty is only for 1 year. They wrote me and told me that I could get an extra two years for 250.00. I did not have the money so I hope that it does well.

Shouldn't a laptop have a year warranty AUTOMATICALLY and then any additional warranty you purchase (1 year, 2 year, etc.) be covered for the period AFTER THAT ONE YEAR? I can't imagine buying an expensive product like a laptop and having to pay for anything that occurs within a one year period.

Yes it has a year warranty automatically when you purchase it, I think (not sure) that's with any computer any company. But after your year is up you can purchase a 1-4 years I believe. I just renewed mine for another year and it was only $99.

I have a Dell desktop computer... It's still running like new after four years. The only thing that's not original to this setup is the monitor -- but that was not Dell's fault... One of my mom's cats chewed thru the monitor -> CPU cord. But it worked out in my favor... when I got this desktop four years ago, we got a CRT monitor. But now I have a nice pretty flatscreen for it. :D

It's important to note: Most Dell DESKTOPS I've seen have run EXTREMELY well. It's their laptops that are complete and utter garbage.

make sure you find a way to manually hold in the AC adapter with your hand or something after it starts to break (tape won't work), and order a new one in the meantime before the first one completely stops working. should happen every 2-6 months.

And about their desktops...They're actually very good. We have a Dell desktop that's 8 years old and it still runs great, never has been in the shop before. It's almost completely obsolete now, but it's lived a good long life.
