Dan's dad was played by Ned Beatty, whom I think looked and even acted remarkably like John Goodman. I think that he was perfect for the role.
What did you think of Ed Connor? He reminds me of a pompous, full of poop relative of mine in his early appearances, but I'm glad that the show let him evolve and give him more depth.
Him falling in love with and marrying Dan and Roseanne's friend, Crystal, was more than a little weird to me, but at least he got a second chance at being a good husband and father. Oh, and it gave that flake, Crystal, a reason for being on the show.
I take it from the things Dan said about his childhood that Ed hadn't been a good father or husband to Dan and his mother, but I love the episode where Dan confronts him over Dan's mother being hospitalized. It was clear that Ed knew he'd made some mistakes, although he wasn't responsible for Dan's mother's mental illness.
I was happy that Dan and Ed were on good terms by the end of the show. Dan mentions at Darlene's wedding that he hadn't spoken to Ed in a couple of years, but he didn't go into why.
There were some fractured relationships on this show. Sometimes it was a little too realistic for me!
