Funnyman Steve Carell has turned agony uncle, dishing out his brand of comedic advice in a column in Thursday's edition of an American newspaper.

Carell plays an advice columnist in new movie Dan In Real Life, so editors at USA Today decided to see how he'd fare answering real people's problem letters.

In one letter, Sean Herriott, from Green Bay, Wisconsin, writes about how he's finding it increasingly difficult to laugh at his five-year-old daughter's unfunny jokes.

Carell replies: "Let me start by saying intuitive children are the worst. Just bear in mind that because of this your life will only get more complicated. For your sake, and the sake of your child, you must become a better liar."

Another reader, Shirley Davis, from Alexandria, Virginia, wonders how best to tell a neighbor to stop parking her car in her parking space. Carell recommends: "My advice is to find an inflatable exact replica of your vehicle. Leave that in your parking space when you are away using your car."
