 So I just saw "Roseanne" in a German store & the running time claims to be '550 mins' versus the region 1 at '505 mins'. The cover is the same as Anchor Bay but it's actually released by a totally different company. I am thinking of purchasing just to see if it is "UNEDITED"??!! Will let u know!

Just make sure the DVD is region free or that your DVD player can play all regions.

550 minutes is what the aussie season one runs at.. so yeah, the german one should probably be unedited at that length =)

Well im waiting for the "boxset" to be released, theres gotta be extra stuff on there including season 1 uncut maybe? :D

Yes, it's largely uncut. The episdoes run mostly at 24:15 or at least more than 23 minutes. The exception is Mall Story with just over 22 minutes. So basically like the australian release I think.

Here is a sort of review I wrote after I had seen just a few episodes. I'm now up to The slice of Life:

Some weeks ago, when I had already long given up on Roseanne ever getting
released on DVD here, a season 1 box was indeed announced. This was
exciting news especially since there was some hope that the DVDs might
be uncut. Though some onlineshops reported a running time in line with
the UK and US versions, others like amazon.de as well as the
publisher, Universum Film, reported 575 minutes. Unfortunately the
announcement did not mention any extras.

I have this box since monday and I can indeed confirm it's uncut. So
far all the episodes are running 24 minutes 15 seconds and the scenes
mentioned at

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=185535

are indeed present. The box states a running time of 550 minutes which
is what amazon has corrected the number to shortly before release.
What's more, the extras are present after all, though I have not yet
got to them.

The box uses the original US/UK layout for the most part. The little
"film pictures" are different, though. The ones on the front are from
season 1, but the ones from the back are from various other seasons.
Well, I suppose they wanted to correct for the fact that there were too
many season 1 pictures on the box...

The text on the back is a German standard text for Roseanne and it's
pretty bad. Nothing there specifically referring to season 1. Nowhere
on the box does it even mention George Clooney which could have been a
good selling point.

The box is very slim. The downside of that is that of the 4 DVDs 2 and
2 overlap each other and you must take out the upper one to get to the
one below that. I would have preferred a bigger box with direct access
to all DVDs.

Audio is available in both German and English in Dolby Digital 2.0
Mono. Video quality is okay, not as good as my UK season 2 set. The
video is German which means the episode titles displayed are the
German ones.

There are no subtitles at all. I'm kinda used to not having English
subtitles in German sets, but here there are not even German ones.

There is no booklet with episode summaries or even a list of
episodes. There is a list at the back of the box, but only German
titles. There is a paper in there mentioning that if you buy the first
8 seasons you get the 9th for free. This doesn't concern me because I
already had season 2 and besides am only interested in 1-5, certainly
not 8 and 9. But it's still good news because it's like a promise.
Hopefully they stay true to it and don't stop after season 3 or
something.

It also says there that they will release one season every 3 months,
though season 2 is scheduled for 26th November which is much earlier
than that.

Here are some pictures of the box, the menu and out of episodes:

It's certainly much more enjoying to watch the episodes in the original
than the German version. I'd consider the second half of this season
the good one but even with the first few episodes I'm having a lot of
fun. They just become twice or thrice as good just because the
dialogue and voices are so much better. And this is especially true
for season 1 because there the German dubbing is even worse than in
later seasons.

This box is region 2 which means it plays in every European DVD
player.

Does it have the original abc opening or the "syndicated" around the table opening? The Aus. version has the original openings.

Check "Here's to good friends", if the scene where Jackie returns with the wedding ring is present.. the aussie DVD cuts that scene for some reason.

What's the difference between these openings? It's the table opening that's also on the uk season 2 set.

Yes, the scene where Jackie gives back the ring is there.

Sorry I wuz misinformed, it's just a different logo! Plus the uncut should say Roseanne Barr instead of Roseanne Arnold(for 1st season).

The uncut intros run ~1 minute each, except for the pilot episode, which is the same length as the syndicated ones, about 30 seconds each.

That logo is only in the pilot. The other episodes have different versions of the normal logo.

The opening says "Roseanne Barr" and is a bit more than a minute in length.

I think they recorded the opening credits twice. One where the camera goes around the table quite fast and the other where it takes it time.

Well it looks like the German set is the one to go for above the Australian set.

Even though the runtimes for the German set are slightly shorter than the Australian set, I'd predict that was because the German company did a correct transfer from the original video to PAL (the European standard, which results in the material being ever so slightly sped up). Whereas even though Australia is PAL too, Magna Pacific are a cheap company and usually convert the American NTSC transfers to playback on PAL systems. Which although it means the material doesn't speed up, it's the cheap way out and won't give the best picture on a PAL system.

So it would appear that the Australian version wasn't completely uncut after all, and the German set has slightly more.

German set here I come.

2 bad the Dollar is so weak against the Euro!! This set will be around $30ish for Americans!(or more depending on where u buy) Thanx Roseanne Fan1985, always wondered y PAL is slighty faster. The Married with Children set for a few seasons in German set r also a bit funky looking with the video quality. Kinda like watching downloaded video, a bit jumpy, but only have ever noticed this with MWC(German set).

cheenii

Haha... 30 dollar. You Americans are really too used to low prices. The cheapest I have seen this set for is 28 euro, I paid 32 but have also seen it for 35. I wouldn't call 30 euro cheap but not expensive either...

Sorry to bump this post, but I'd just like to clarify the difference between the Aussie and German dvd sets.

Does the german set feature the "Viacom" logo at the end of the end credits? It shows briefly for 7-10 seconds and would explain the different lengths of certain episodes. I compared an episode of the aussie dvd set with an unedited tv airing of an episode and it matched it identicly, so in conclusion... the ONLY thing different between the sets is that a short scene is missing in episode 8 on the aussie set (end of a scene.. must have been a production error). Other than this, the two sets are identical.
