COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - An elementary school has banned tag on its playground after some children complained they were harassed or chased against their will.

"It causes a lot of conflict on the playground," said Cindy Fesgen, assistant principal of the Discovery Canyon Campus school.

Running games are still allowed as long as students don't chase each other, she said.

Fesgen said two parents complained to her about the ban but most parents and children didn't object.

In 2005, two elementary schools in the nearby Falcon School District did away with tag and similar games in favor of alternatives with less physical contact. School officials said the move encouraged more students to play games and helped reduce playground squabbles

Poor little Timmy was traumatized for the entire day when they tagged him and called him IT!

IT!

I only hope that someday we can live without labels!

Dodgeball was awesome. It was the only time you could get away with throwing objects at other people as hard as you can.

No, but I do remember the first time I ever played. I was in 1st grade I think, and was really uncoordinated. I attempted to throw a ball, and it completely slipped out of my hand, and I drilled one of the gym teachers right in the head. LOL.

No, I was on base. :p

Duck Duck Goose is when the kids sat in a circle and another kid walked around the children who were sitting and touched their heads and said DUCK for each child they touched on the head. When they wanted a particular kid to get up and run after them, they then said GOOSE. At that point the child who was chosen gets up and runs after that kid. Usually they ran around the circle a total of three times before they occupied the place of the child they called GOOSE. If the child who is GOOSE catches up to the kid who "chose" them, they had to sit in the center of the circle until someone else was "goosed".

IMHO, the school and the kids' parents really missed a great opportunity to teach the children about respect, resolving conflict, and playing fair.

I remember hearing about the kindergarteners who were suspended for playing Cops & Robbers

No wonder kids are getting heavier and heavier every year. Playing tag was a wonderful experience when I was growing up. Anyone here ever play TV tag? My friends and I spent hours "outside" playing all types of tag! Heaven forbid one of us would complain about being traumatized by it! LOL!!

I would have told my son to just deal with it. God, parents nowadays are really too PC for my tastes!

Dodgebal was lots of fun as well as British Bulldog and in the winter King of Mountain.

I loved Tag. Freeze Tag and TV Tag were my favorites. Nowadays, it seems like if you look at somebody the wrong way, they are traumatized. The whole PC thing has really gone overboard.

You are so right. Rather than use the opportunity to teach all the kids a lesson and in some way maybe embarrass the kids who were somewhat being bullies by chasing those who didn't want to play, they decide to just ban the game.

I think it has less to do with the whole "PC" thing ( Which is just a cop-out anyway ) than the fact that schools dont want to be responsible for any kind of discipline; for instance, when I was young, schools would expel bullies, now, if a parent comes to the school complaining that their kid is being beaten up, the Principal's first response is: "You should enroll him in karate classes." Now THERES a great idea, I dont want my kid fighting, so I should have him learn to fight, NOT! I think a better solution is to sue a few school boards and administrators if they cant make a school safe for my child!
( This is all hypothetical of course, since Ive never had a wife or any children of my own )

What the hell kind of school system do you canadians have that would tell the parent to enroll their kid into karate?? All the schools I've dealt with do not tolerate any kind of bullying and will suspend a kid over it. And I know you "touchy-feely" types don't condone fighting in any instance but sometimes you have to take a stand for yourself instead of letting your "mommy" do it for you.
Amen! My son has been in karate for 4 years now. He will defend himself if he feels he is being picked on. He also knows when he should just walk away. Sometimes, it takes a bigger person to walk away than to start trouble.

Can only imagine these kids in 10 years telling their therapist how as children-they were brutally "tagged" on the playgrounds. What's next? Swings? Slides? Sports?

I'm sooo glad that when I was in school we were able to play tag, boys chase girls, dodgeball etc. We pushed, we shoved, we fell, we fought, we made friends, we laughed and had fun! That was all part of being a kid! And we're all still here and doing just fine.

Uh, that's terrible. I predict kids will be playing in rubber rooms in the next 5-10 years. Boys in one room and girls in the other.
