Out of Breath
Takes place in the Eastland years
(Mrs. Garret is in the Cafeteria setting up for dinner when Jo startles her)
J- Hey Mrs. G!!!
MG- Hey Jo! How was practice?
J- Great! I hit 3 home runs. We are definitely gonna win that game.
MG- That’s great Jo! I am so glad you decided to sign up for softball
J- Me either.
(Blair comes walking in)
B- Hello all!
MG- Hey Blair!
J- Hey Blair!
B- (Surprised Jo actually said Hi to her w/o saying some mean remark about her good looks) What are you so happy about? Did you win the Miss Goodwrench contest?
J- (Laughs) Oh Blair…Blair, Blair, Blair, Blair, Blair how do you come up with such funny remarks.
B- Well…(begins to giggle) You know how witty I am.
J- (Laughs with Blair then frowns and holds up a fist) You ever say that again you are going to loose your wittyness!
B- (Backs off Jo and walks into the lounge to work on her homework)
J- Well I got to go. The team wants to take me out to eat for a victory party.
MG- Victory party?! You haven’t even had the game yet. Aren’t you getting your hopes a little too high?
J- Mrs. G, We aren’t hoping to win we know we are going to win and I am going to win the game for them. Well see ya later Mrs. G (Walks out of the room)
MG- (Worried look on her face) I think I’ve created a monster.
(The next day at the big game Blair Mrs. Garret Tootie and Natalie are sitting on the bleachers)
B- I hope this game ends soon these flies are bugging the heck out of me.
T&N- (Look at Blair and roll their eyes)
MG- Oh goodie the game is starting!
T&N&B- (Look as Mrs. G and start laughing)
T- Oh look Jo is hitting first.
N- Oh its going over the fence!!!!!!!!
(((Crowd cheers))))
MG- Wow look at her run! She is going to be tired.
B- Ugh! Look at all that dirt flying.
T- Blair would you hush! (Interupted by cheers) She made it home!!!!!!! Woohoo!!!! GO JO!!!!!!!!
N- Uh oh she just fell over she doesn’t look good. Mrs. Garret is she okay? Mrs. Garret?! (Turns to see Mrs. G isn’t in her seat)
MG- (Pushes through the crowd to see Jo gasping for air) Jo! Jo what’s wrong?!
J- (Face is pale and she is crying and gasping for air) Mrs.….G…can’t…b…breath
MG- Someone call 911!!!!!
N- I will!
(((((Later in the emergency room)))))
D- Mrs. G?
MG- That’s me. My real name is Edna Garret. Is she okay?
D- Yes she will be fine she just had a minor asthma attack.
B- (Stands up quickly) Asthma?!
D- Yes um… she doesn’t know yet but I figured one of you might want to tell her.
MG- Okay thank you doctor.
D- Just doing my job.
MG- I guess I’ll go tell Jo.
(Mrs. G walks into Jo’s room)
MG- Hi Jo! How ya feeling?
J- Fine now. What happened to me at the game?
MG- Well…Jo you had an asthma attack.
J- Asthma?! I don’t have asthma how could I have an asthma attack.
MG- Well that’s the thing Jo you do have asthma. But it isn’t that big a deal.
J- Are you kidding?! I am going to have to take inhalers and my team is going to think I’m a nerd!
MG- Just because you have asthma doesn’t mean you’re a nerd. Jo I am sure your friends won’t care. Blair, Tootie, and Natalie don’t think you’re a nerd. But I guess they aren’t important.
J- Of course they are! But what about baseball? I can’t play anymore can I?
MG- Of course you can. All you have to do is take an inhaler. Nothing is going to change.
J- If you say so.
(A week later)
MG- Jo did you take your inhaler?
J- Yeah.(Walks upstairs)
B- Hey Jo you forgot to take your inhaler.
J- I know and I don’t intend to take it anyways.
B- You better. Jo you have practice today and what if you have another asthma attack.
J- Blair don’t worry I’ll be fine. I hate taking that stupid inhaler. I don’t people to think any different of me so I just won’t use it. I haven’t taken it for three days and I haven’t hadan asthma attack yet.
B- Jo just because you have asthma doesn’t mean you are a nerd. Lots of people have asthma. I know it isn’t great but if you don’t use that inhaler you can die!
J- Blair I know what I am doing! I gotta go to practice bye! (Walks out of the room and leaves for practice)
B- I better talk to Mrs. G.
MG- (Hears Blair) Talk to me about what?
B- (Jumps after hearing Mrs. G) Oh nothing.
MG- Blair spit it out!
B- Oh alright. Mrs Garret, Jo isn’t taking her inhaler. She hasn’t been for the past three days.
MG- What?! We have got to talk to her and fast. Come on! (Grabs Blair heads toward the baseball field)
J- (Sees Blair and Mrs. G) Uh oh! Coach! Um…I gotta go bye!
C- Alright! Great job today Jo!
MG- (Runs up to the coach) Where is Jo?
C- She said she had to go.
MG- (Very angry) When I get my hands on that girl…(Sees everyone is looking at her) I am going to give her a big hug. (Starts to laugh)
B-I bet I know where she is. Come on!
J- (Is at the mall. She sees a lot of people smoking but doesn’t remember that smoke can trigger an asthma attack and continues to walk right through the smoke. She begins to cough and can’t stop a man walks up to her)
Man- Are you okay?
J- (Shakes her head no)
Man- Someone get help!
(Later a doctor arrives and helps Jo)
J- Thanks doc.
D- No problem. It is a good thing that man saw you. You might have died.
J- (Thinks of what Blair said)
B- (Runs up to Jo and sees a doctor by her) Jo?! Are you okay?
J- Yeah. I’m fine now. Where’s Mrs. G?
B- She couldn’t run she should be coming any minute now.
(Sure enough Blair was right)
MG- JO! (Out of breath from running up to her) If you ever ever do that again.
J- Look Mrs. Garret I learned my lesson. It will never happen again.
D- Mrs. Garret Jo could have died if a man at the mall didn’t notice her. The smoke from the cigarettes triggered the attack.
MG- (Pale at the thought) Alright thank you doctor. As for you Jo…you better use this right now!!!!! (Pulls out the inhaler)
J- (Smiles) I would be glad to.
