Jackie is one of my favorite characters on the show. This part of Roseanne's sister, couldn't have been given to a better actress.
Jackie always put me in mind of a female Barney Fife, when she was a cop. She was soooo funny. I remember one time at The Lobo, there was a ruckas, and Jackie was at the bar off trying to ignore it. I laughed, because it reminded me of Barney. Jackie was a real hoot. She could be supportive when you needed a friend, she was a great sister, and sister in law, to Roseanne and Dan, and a cool aunt to the kids.

You nailed it when you thought Cop Jackie = Barney Fife. Roseanne actually says in the Season 4 DVD that it was a deliberate thing they did that season, to make Jackie funnier-- they wanted Jackie to be a female Barney Fife. Laurie Metcalfe even met Don Knotts to try and capture his character.
I also liked Jackie, she made the show more fun to watch.

I like the Barney Fife comparison. It made for a hilarious Jackie. Too bad she didn't stay that way.
It seems Jackie turned into a not so happy Gilligan.

It was really funny how Jackie took herself so seriously when she was a cop. She used the lingo, always had a serious look on her face and tried to control situations (like Barney Fife).
Even after she was a cop, it stuck with her personality. Remember in the one where Darlene drew chalk outlines of dead cattle in front of the Lunch Box? Jackie cleared out the onlookers by saying something like "Move along, people. There is nothing more to see here." Also at the party the girls had when their parents were gone, Jackie sniffed a guy's drink and then said stoically, "Carry on."
Her face and voice were perfect and hilarious.
I liked her better that way, rather than goofy.

One of my favorite scenes in the entire series is near the end of Season 2. Jackie is in her cop uniform about to leave, and all of a sudden her pistol falls out of her belt onto the ground. Roseanne freaks out and tells her to take it out, and meanwhile Jackie tries to assemble the broken gun while it is pointing at her face, explaining why it's not dangerous.
The camera shows Dan about ready to have a heart attack, and in the background you can see Sara Gilbert and Michael Fishman laughing hysterically during the scene.
At the end after Jackie can't reassemble the weapon, Dan stands up and says "Waste of tax payers' money I tell ya!" I laugh until it hurts every time I see this scene. :D

Thanks for mentioning that one. Now I can't wait to see it again!

Hey thanks all for the posts on Jackie. She was definitely funny. I too liked her better with the cop attitude. It was nice to read all of your replies.

A favorite scene with Jackie: While in uniform, she exits after debating with Mrs. Wellerman about the car accident Mrs. Wellerman had with Roseannne. She walks back in a minute afterward, goes up to her, and dead-seriously tells her "And remember this. I'm your worst nightmare!"

I thought she was hilarious too! Her background is in theatre at the Steppenwolf (founded by Gary Sinese and John Malkovich) in Chicago, so I'm not surprised she is so talented. Anyone that can hold their own with the venerable actors she's been with onstage, is majorly talented in my book.
What I really liked was her gesticulation, the way she physically embodied the character. Certain lines of hers run through my head all the time, like "we can't have a dream with mom in it." Just the way she put the emphasis on the word "Mom" was so funny.
One small criticism, though this is aimed at the writers, is that they turned her character into what I call "Wacky Jackie," wherein the character was more of a sitcom cliche in the latter seasons. Of course, IMO, the writing went downhill overall in the latter seasons, and not just with this particular character.
I also loved how she embraced the cop role, and as someone upthread mentioned, she retained those coplike characteristics afterward. I like little touches of continuity like that.

Also in the running

"Jackie" is awesome! I love her character! You're right. Laurie Metcalfe is a spectacular, super talented actress. She was in a movie with Andy Garcia. That movie Internal Affairs. Richard Gere played the bad police officer. Andy and Laurie were from the internal affairs. She was great!
About "Jackie", I never could understand why Dan would give her such a hard time. She was funny, caring, nurturing, supportive, loving, friendly, a little flaky, but SO funny!

I think that was one way Dan could keep himself distanced from Jackie. In the episode where Roseanne is away from home and Jackie comes in to hold down the fort ("An Officer and a Gentleman," 38-2, which happens to be John Goodman's favorite episode of Roseanne), something is dealt with never really talked about-- the "almost" attraction between Dan and Jackie. Feelings run deep. Goodman and Laurie Metcalf played off each other so well in that episode.
