Actress Cameron Diaz appears to have committed a major fashion crime in Peru.

The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated Shrek films may have inadvertently offended Peruvians.

They suffered decades of violence from a Maoist guerrilla insurgency by touring there on Friday with a bag emblazoned with one of Mao Zedong's favourite political slogans.

While she explored the Inca city of Machu Picchu high in Peru's Andes, Diaz wore over her shoulder an olive green messenger bag emblazoned with a red star and the words 'Serve the People' printed in Chinese on the flap, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao's most famous political slogan.

While the bags are marketed as trendy fashion accessories in some world capitals, the phrase has particular resonance in Peru.

The Maoist Shining Path insurgency took Peru to the edge of chaos in the 1980s and early 1990s with a campaign of massacres, assassinations and bombings.

Nearly 70,000 people were killed during the insurgency.

A prominent Peruvian human rights activist said the star of There's Something About Mary should have been a little more aware of local sensitivities when picking her accessories.

"It alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims," said Pablo Rojas about the bag's slogan.

"I don't think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology" did so much damage.

Why in the world is she carrying a purse with a communist symbol and message?

Why in the world is she carrying a purse with a communist symbol and message?

Because it's supposedly an "in" thing. Most people who live in capitalist countries have no clue what communism even was and what it did to millions of people worldwide. It was just as evil and repressive as Nazism, if not more, and yet you don't see anyone sporting Third Reich fashion.http://www.skyscrapercity.com/images/smilies/shake.gif

Is it just me or are some Hollywood stars more concerned with what goes on in other countries than in their own?? I'm referring to the American ones, of course.

It's weird seeing Mao's name spelled Zedong. I know that's the actual spelling, but growing up, I always saw it spelled "Tse-Tung."

Ah, yes. The Commie fashion statements. *pulls on Viet Cong sweater*

Celebrities are idiots, I'm sorry. They have no idea what suffering actually is... well, unless you're Sharon Tate.

US actress Cameron Diaz has apologised for wearing a bag with a political slogan that evoked painful memories in Peru.

The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated Shrek films visited the Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru's Andes wearing an olive green bag emblazoned with a red star and the words "Serve the People", perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong's most famous political slogan, printed in Chinese.

The bags are marketed as fashion accessories in some cities around the world, but in Peru the slogan evokes memories of the Maoist Shining Path insurgency that fought the government in the 1980s and early 1990s in a bloody conflict that left nearly 70,000 people dead.

"I sincerely apologise to anyone I may have inadvertently offended," Diaz said in a statement. "The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realise the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it."

One prominent Peruvian human rights activist said Diaz should have been a little more aware of local sensitivities when picking her accessories.

Just another useful idiot. Even more so because she didn't even know what she was carrying. That red star, why nobody knows what that means. Isn't this dumbo the once that said republicans would legalize rape or something. It's tough to keep the Hollyweird stupid statements together.
