The "Lost" season finale fell double digits compared to last year. "Lost" (13.7 million, 5.8/15) was beaten by "Idol" between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. although it gained viewers and in adults 18-49 after 10 p.m. But it was down 23% in viewers and 24% in adults 18-49 compared to last year's season finale May 24 (17.8 million, 7.6/18). And it fell even further compared to the first-season finale (from 8-10 p.m. on May 25, 2005) that averaged 20.7 million viewers and a 7.8/19 in adults 18-49.

I hate American Idol. The local FOX channel had coverage on their news at 6 and then they had a pre-coverage show at 7:30. They treated it like the Super Bowl.

Tell me about it, my Fox Station in NYC did the same thing.

Regarding Fox, what a waste of airtime.
My boyfriend used to watch LOST. It lost many a viewers by going to 10pm.

Not only that, but going on a long hiatus as well.

True. One reason I have lost interest in Prison Break. I can't stand that crap. I miss the good ol' days of television when a NEW SEASON meant at least 6 months of new episodes without any break whatsoever.
I couldn't believe LOST already was showing their finale. How many episodes did they have for this season?

They had a full load, but it just seemed short because of the forgotten fall episodes. I do hate waiting, but it will be worth it when the time comes.

They had 6 episodes to start out the season and then didn't come back until early in the air. The first 6 episodes only mainly concerned 3 people so they lost a lot of fans when they did that. It's to bad because the last half of this season has been great.
As for Prison Break they started back in August so I just taped those shows and then played them each week when September came around. I was always behind what the rest of the country was watching but I had less of a break. I played the first half of the season right up to about Christmas.

Actually people have been DVR-ing Lost. Because when the 7 day ratings come in, Lost is near 17-18 million, which is what it was doing in the fall.
Next season when it returns, it will air 8 or 9pm, and that will really help.

If you can add millions on because of DVR, Tivo, etc, then can't you do you the same with the last couple of seasons too. It's all relative, isn't it.

Lost's DVR rating was off the roof this season (#1 DVRed show of the season). The first two seasons maybe 1 million or so would be added on after seven days. This season it was doubled, and some episodes more than tripled of that.

That may be true, but still there's no denying that Lost has lost millions of viewers from season to season.

Maybe it has, maybe not. Adding the DVR stats really makes it even to last season. I'm sure many fans will catch up with the third season DVD this fall because the next season won't start until February, but it will be 16 straight episodes.
The third season DVD, as of now, is slated to come out in October. So fans can catch up with season three in plenty of time. That's another thing, Lost is the #1 selling TV DVD.
So, Lost's season finale was down 4 million from last year's finale, but when the DVR's is added in, it'll be close to last season's. Oh, and what about American Idol? Where is the thread saying that finale was down? Its finale was down 6 million from last season's.

Absolutely it has. ABC did a lot to hurt this show. It may be DVR'd, that just means to me people don't put it on a priority as other shows.

No clue about AI. Never watched a split second in my life. The point that I'm making is, that no matter how you slice it, dice it, or toss it in the air, Lost (not just the finale), has lost millions of viewers, from season to season. It's kind of a young show for that to be happening, considering how strong it debuted.

I read several articles that House and The Office were the most DVR'd shows. I haven't heard anything about Lost. I am not saying that you are not correct, but The Hollywood Reporter and Variety posted the latter.

You have to look at each week's DVR ratings, not just a few. And I know which story you're talking about, and it does mention Lost:

Even you have to admit that Lost is slipping. It just isn't water cooler talk anymore. Heroes and other shows are getting that talk now.

That's for sure. I was obsessed with Lost for the first two seasons, but spent last fall swearing at and throwing pillows at my tv, lol. It's a coin toss when watching the show. It will either suck or be fantastic. The first two seasons were fantastic from start to finish. I can't recall a megahit show being so mismanaged before.

Isn't water cooler talk? The latter part of this season was the best episodes of the series. Heroes gets the same numbers as Lost did this season. If I were allowed to post the DVR 7 day ratings, I would post them in the General board. But here is another "public" article:

The quality might have returned, but there is a saying, "Too little, too late." I am not saying that Lost is finished, but at work for a couple of years all I heard from people was about Lost. Now, it is Heroes this and Heroes that.

How is it too little too late? There are so many ways to watch a TV shows these days. DVD, DVR, iTunes, Network website. People have many more options to watch their favorite shows than even last year. Bring out the raw stats and you will see Lost is even to last year counting all these new ways to watch a show. If you want to talk about a show really down, then talk about 24.
I don't watch Heroes, but I know it is a water cooler hit like you said, but it is no Lost from season one.

When I say too little too late, it wasn't meant to say the show will never be watched again, just that it isn't MUST SEE TV like it use to be. 24 is another show that lost a lot of steam. The quality of that went down this year as well.
As far as water cooler talk comparing season 1 of Lost to Season 1 of Heroes, that is simply a matter of opinion. All I know, I work in an entertainment field, and the talk now is Heroes.

If DVR, etc. adds a couple of million viewers to the tally this season, then it surely added numbers to the first two seasons as well. Maybe not as much, but I'm sure a good amount. Fact is, Lost has lost millions of viewers, from season to season. I don't even think ABC denies that. Why deny the sky being blue.
The God's honest truth is that all I hear from my family and friends (the ones still watching) is how it jumped the shark. I don't agree with that. The show still has more life to it, three years to be exact. The fact that ABC announced an ending date with abbreviated seasons says a lot.
I actually think those 16 episode seasons are a good idea. I think one of the problems with Lost is that they had to fill up too many hours with mystery and action. It's difficult to keep that momentum going, so the writers started phoning episodes in, as in the first six episodes last fall, concentrating on three characters in cages. Good Lord, what were they thinking. With only 16 episodes, I'm thinking less filler and confusion, and more quality and high drama. Often, less is best. HBO figured that out, a long time ago.

Do you watch Heroes and Lost? I don't think you can or I can judge which show had a better first season. Maybe someone who watched both first seasons can. I was trying to say Heroes Season 1 is not even close to Lost Season 1 in the ratings.
I don't watch 24 either, but the ratings slid in March when Dancing with the Stars came and even more in April when Heroes returned, but Heroes was also way down from earlier in the year.
This 2006-07 season did not have a ratings sensation. They had moderate hits that look promising like Heroes, Brothers and Sisters, Ugly Betty and Shark. But none of them were 20 million type hits.

Janice, like I said last season its DVR ratings was just 1 million or so. Last season ABC didn't debut the iTunes or abc.com airings until April. Lost is #1 on iTunes and abc.com. Not to mention DVR. I don't know how much more I can try to explain this, there is more than one way to watch this show.
I think the reason people didn't want to watch live is because of the 10pm slot and the four month break from November to Feb. It will be better next year when all 16 air in consecutive weeks and the show will air in an 8 or 9pm slot. Kids and teens can't stay up at 10pm.

Season 2's ratings were up from season one. Though the latter part of season two was down from the earlier part, thanks to American Idol.
Season 3 is on par with the latter part of season two, if you count all these new ways to watch Lost.
The ways to watch TV is changing due to technology. I think that is the reason why many shows have suffered in the ratings the second half of this season.

Okay Pavan, lots of fuzzy math going on there, lol. Lost is slipping. We all know it. I don't like it anymore than you or any Lost fan. It's got to be off about eight million viewers from the first season. Alternative viewing methods can't make up that many viewers. I'm hoping that next year, it picks up and gets back on top.

Isn't that what the Lost board is here for, to discuss the show? Is this a tribute board? I don't offer only criticism. Read my posts on this thread alone, and you'll see. You're too sensitive to anything against ABC, even when faced with facts.
The Lost message boards on ABC.com are cooking like crazy, complaints and all. Maybe I'll post there, where a moderator won't tell me to stop complaining. This board, this site, needs all the posts it can get. You should remember that. I'm offering intelligent analysis here. Too bad you can't see that.

I never said not to post complaints. When I said Lost fans complain a lot, I was not indicating you. I'm saying Lost fans in general complain too much. For Season 1 and 2, fans wanted less repeats, they got that in season three. Then they complained about the four month break. And the constant complaining about answers. I am a fan and I don't mind waiting for answers. The show has an end date, so we will get answers.
I guess the complaints are good, because that means they care. I also didn't like the first 6 episodes of the season that much, but you have to agree the episodes were of great quality after the break. And we will now see that each episode. The only one that wasn't of good quality after the break was the Jack tattoo revealing episode.
I gave you reasons why the ratings were down in live viewers, but you called it fuzzy math. What more can I say? TV viewing is changing, and I don't think you can see that. There is more than one way to watch something now. You didn't give me ANY facts. I gave you several articles on DVRs. Yes, the live airings numbers are down, but that does NOT mean millions of viewers have fled which you keep saying.

Well, I'm a huge Lost fan, and I hate the mistakes made this past season. Fans know the strengths and weaknesses of a show. The Sopranos, no bigger fan than me...never missed a single episode in over eight years now, but I'm the first to say when they put on a crapfest of an episode or even a season. I'm hoping that Lost rebounds and regains all the glory of its first season.
