Gas Prices Surge To Record U.S. Average Pump Prices Nearly 20 Cents Higher Than Two Weeks Ago
Posted: 4:45 pm CDT May 6, 2007
Camarillo, Calif. -- Motorists are already reeling from rising gasoline prices. Now, it's time for more sticker shock.
Pump prices surged to a record nationwide average $3.07 per gallon, nearly 20 cents higher than two weeks earlier, oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday.
The previous U.S. record was $3.03 per gallon on Aug. 11, 2006.
Just two weeks ago, the U.S. average for a gallon of gas was $2.87, but the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 stations nationwide on Friday showed a 19.47-cent increase to $3.07. That's up 88.38 cents since Jan. 19, Lundberg said.
The increase is due mostly to refinery problems, Lundberg said, noting there have been at least a dozen additional partial shutdowns in the U.S. and internationally that cut refining capacity.
The nationwide average for mid-grade gasoline was $3.18 and premium was $3.28.
The nation's lowest pump price was $2.80 per gallon in Charleston, S.C., while the highest was $3.49 in San Francisco. The lowest price in California was $3.34 in Sacramento.

HUH??? why in the hell is it cheaper in Ventura county than compare to San Diego, where I was when I filled up with gas:rolleyes: ..damn it, that is it..I am moving to Thousand Oaks or something...Ha!;)
I haven't a clue. BUT! there was a time when we had it higher than anywhere else. I too want to know why it varies so much in each county.

3.60 for unleaded..I paid, nearly 40 bucks for a full gallon of gas that is going to last me less than a week..*HORRIBLE*
When I was in the Los Angeles area in March, we drove through Beverly Hills... They wanted $3.70 for super unleaded. I bet it's around $4 at that gas station right now. Yikes! (prices were only about $2.20 back at home, so it was quite a shock to come to Los Angeles and see how ridiculous the prices were. :faint:)
It's 2.99 for unleaded here now, BTW. Blah.

Catlover, Marathon's range is from Minnesota to Florida. Heading west from Ohio the brand disappears somewhere in Illinois, and heading east it disappears in Pennsylvania. If there is no Marathon around (I travel a LOT!) I try to look for Phillips 66 (or, in effect, Conoco or "76") or Exxon or Mobil (only available here in Ohio at United Dairy Farmers mini-groceries).
I have a loyalty to Marathon, by the way, to the point where I call it "the 'thon"!

2.99 for Regular here at home (Albany, KY). Ranging from 2.79 to 2.99 in this area - price changes by town, not by station.
As their prices are always within 1-2 cents of the other stations' prices - and most of the time here they're equal -you'll usually see me filling up at Shell

You're damn right it is! In my area, it's up to $3.50 a gallon. I think we've had enough of oil company hotshots making excuses for their refinery problems instead of taking responsibility for all this high-priced fuel garbage. It's the oil companies' responsibility to upgrade their refineries. Last I heard, they were taking their unearned profits and squandering them on other things instead of using them to upgrade their refineries. I detest greed! Whatever happened to processing domestic petroleum? Those narrow-minded environmentalists are so overly concerned about adding to greenhouse gasses. Why don't they get a clue-processing domestic fuels beats counting on other countries for petroleum. If those environmentalist are so concerned about the domestic fuels polluting the air we breath, why not filter all fuels at all pumps. Domestic fuels might save us, the consumers, a lot of money. We also need to consider placing restrictions on importing petroleum. What about opening the reserves? That's a possibility. As for the oil companies, they need to be taxed heavily, not the consumers. They're making a profit at our expense. If anyone else has any ideas on how to quell this problem, please post anything you have in mind.

If this proposal clears Congress, they had better expect our President to veto this proposal and work on overriding his veto and making it law. We've suffered enough and this insanity needs to stop.

Our current situation is worse than the picture, more or less, but the fact in the matter is fuel prices that run more than a dollar than they're supposed to be, is still too much to pay. There isn't anything reasonable about this problem, but unfortunately, we're stuck with it. Go to a several postings back and you'll find that link from MSNBC about the House passing a measure, which is to hold Oil Companies accountable for taking advantage of the consumers, namely us. Don't expect our President to pass this measure-you can't trust him. He would likely consider this a threat to his fellow oilmen and their business practices, but the fact is they need to be held fully accountable for the problems they've created by their failure to use their profits to upgrade their refineries, which is their responsibility.

While up in Yosemite on the outskirts, we had to get gas. There were no other gas stations for MILES. This place was charging $5.05 a gallon. :faint:
I remember the good ol' days of the gas crunch and the price was less than .75 cents a gallon. ;)
Look at what I found on gas prices:
Did you know that gasoline costs less in 2005 than it did in 1980? Impossible, you say! That is the case, though, when prices are adjusted for inflation.
Back in 1980, a gallon of gas cost about $1.13.
More recently, in 2005 a gallon of gas cost $1.66.
Yes, $1.66 is more than $1.13, but when the rate of inflation is figured in, the cost of a gallon of gas in 1980 was $2.59 (in 2005 dollars).
You can use an online inflation calculator to verify that:

It's the 70's and early 80's all over again. Yikes.
You know, I'm surprised gas stayed as low as it did for decades. It barely went up when I was a kid... so I remember $1 and cheaper gas growing up. I remember when gas stations would have days where they'd sell gas for 50 or 75 cents, and they'd have cars lined up for miles. 75-cent gas, no more.
I know gas was still pretty freaking low when I graduated from HS and that was in '03. $1.20 at least. I remember gas prices hovering at $1.05 - $1.15 the summer before my junior year in 2001.

i've been buying online more than ever whenever i can. i did most of last years xmas shopping that way and have been buying birthday presents that way too. my car has become strictly for work although if gas goes over 4.50, which the odds of it happening are increasing, i will look into buying a monthly bus pass. only trouble there is i work 20-25 miles away and although buses run til 1am the last one where i live most likely stops runs to that location about 8pm. i'd have to come into work around 3 hours earlier. i know come fall i'll be using electric blankets and extra layers because i can;t afford both the cost of heating my house and running my vehicle if this continues.

I had a friend in college who was ten years older than me who got his driver's license in 1978 and remembers gas being 52 (if not 48) cents a gallon, only to see it go up to 73 cents within a year. This was in southwest Ohio, by the way. On a trip out to California in 1980 he saw gas for $1.05  and took a picture!

Yea, that sucks, I used to live in a small town 5 years ago and literally I had to drive to get to any sign of civilization. Haaaaated it. I'm a city boy, If I don't have chaos and noise surrounding me at all hours of the day, I go insane. :p But that's why i moved to a big city for school, knowing that gas was creeping up and up. Prices have been high for a loooong time, we're just starting to feel it now in this country. Gas in Canada has always been a bit more expensive than here and don't get me started on Europe. I have friends living in Germany and Holland, and after converting to dollars and gallons, avergae gas over there is about $8.50 a gallon. And has been for a looong time. But the reason that they don't feel the pinch as much as we do is because they have MUCH MUCH better public transportation infrastructure. Busses, trams, trolleys, subways, elevated trains, etc. Only a handful of cities in this country have half as much as that. This is why I'm moving back to Chicago, I don't like being forced to use a car just to live day to day life. Man was made to walk and walk is what I'm going to do damnit lol.

Although I am back in NYC, I still like to drive. Heck I still keep my florida license for cheaper rates. These gas prices are just so high. What I do is take the train (subway) to cut back on using the car. People have asked me why I don't sell or get rid of it, but I like being self efficient. It's paid off, auto insurance is cheap and if there's another Transit strike, I will have a car to get around in.
With the gas, I just make sure that I pull from other financial sources to counter the increased prices on gas.

People people people. I'm not trying to say that gas is not high here but think about these things.
4. People who smoke & drink blame gas for money problems. Try to STOP smoking and drinking and you will have a lot of money you never knew you had.
3. Try getting a rewards card. You can save money at the store and save on gas as well.
2. Like my Uncle says: "It's still pretty cheap to ride around in a car when you think about it. People blame gas whenever they have a money problem."
1. If the stupid Democrats would let us drill in Alaska we would not have this problem. Gas has nothing to do with Bush. He does not set the price. If we could drill in Alaska we would have a better price. All the Democrats do is set it up to make Bush look like the bad guy at ever turn when he has nothing to do with it. And even if gas was lower, people would find something else to get upset over. It's an endless loop. And that is the truth.

What does working on Sunday have to do with anything? My boyfriend works on Sunday and earns time and a half. At the wage he earns on a regular day, that is a lot of money he earns on Sunday. You can't assume because someone works on a Sunday, they don't earn that much.
And where did you come up with $5 per hour to start? ?Depending on the job and the state you live in, you can earn more. Here in Calif. minimum wage is $7.50 an hour and expected to go up again in a year.

And what abt taxes that come out of one's check? Fed taxes, state taxes, withholdings of all sorts, etc. $1800 doesn't go straight to one's pocket.
Hard-working people paying mortgage, car payments, car insurance, groceries, utilities, health insurance, dental insurance, co-payments, prescriptions, clothes, gas in your car, etc. adds up. And living in So. California doesn't come cheap. I'm in the Houston area this week and I just paid $3.92 a gallon. It's nuts, but thankfully I am on expenses with my company for the next month so I am being reimbursed for all the mileage I am driving. I'm not loking forward to having to start paying for gas on my own. I have had a comopany car the last year and did not pay for gas as the price was rising.
However, this week I turned in my company car and I know that is now going to take a big chunk out of my paycheck. I am fortunate that I can afford it, but there is no reason for gas to be this high other than greed by the gas companies!

....Do a Google Image search for gas prices - and start sobbing at the now-low prices that we were all complaining about. Hell, look at early in this thread.
This is how high it is: OPEC has said that gas and crude are too high. (Essentially, oil is their golden goose, and the more it climbs the faster development of alternative fuels will go - thereby killing the golden goose a LOT faster). It's ridiculous.
Stopped for $3.899 at Speedway and felt like I was getting a bargain. Looking at the markets - this really is the fault of the speculators at this point. They're trying to make money, and energy is their chosen item to use to build wealth. Crude is experiencing a bubble now...I say either the bubble needs to be popped.

lol of all places to pick, you pick Estonia? :p But yea, I kind of agree, what does it matter how much gas is there? high gas prices in Europe has been the standard for a looooong time that increases there come in a matter of years, not weeks. my relatives have been paying over $5 in Poland for years. the only reason they don't really bitch is because their car really isn't a necessity, more of a luxury. Everything they need is within walking distance, so they really only use their car when they go on vacations or to the airport.

On Friday everybody went up to $4.159 per gallon here in Dayton. However, Speedway did NOT lead the spike. The first $4.159 spotting was on the north side of Dayton (I-75 at Exit 58/Needmore Road, which has usually been cheap). According to DaytonGasPrices.com there have since been $4.199 spottings up in Fairborn!

Yeah, and as Jay Leno said last night, gas prices have gone down a whole 3 cents recently. That's to offset when it goes up to $8 a gallon by Labor Day!!
Near where I live there are 3 gas stations around each other, a Circle K on one side of the road, and a BP and I think Exxon on other side. At Circle K it's $3.95, the other 2 it's $4.09. It always surprises me when I see people gassing up at the 2 that are $4.09. I just don't get it.

I think people think that BP and Exxon have a better grade of gas than Circle K, so thats the reason they pay the higher price. I buy the cheapest, which in this case, would be Circle K. Gas is gas to me.

Some people prefer to use premium even though their car don't call for it. Regular gas is so high today, i couldn't imagine having to use premium gas for my car.

On the way home I saw it for $3.649 at a BP station. Or, more accurately, bp since it uses lower case letters on the sign now.
OhioGasPrices.com (http://www.ohiogasprices.com) reports two $3.599 sightings, one in Mansfield and one in Ontario (a Mansfield suburb)! Nothing under $3.60 here in Dayton ... yet. (There's a $3.609 on the north side.)

A $3.599 posting has been spotted in Dayton at a Marathon on Needmore Road (north side)! Not only that, on the way home $3.699 was the most I saw! Goodbye and good riddance, $4 gasoline!
There are now six stations under $3.60 in Ohio, including one $3.539! (They are up in the Mansfield area, by the way.)

At OhioGasPrices.com (http://www.ohiogasprices.com) somebody reported a $3.399 price in Belpre, Ohio, on US 50 across from Parkersburg, West Virginia. I don't quite believe it since (1) that part of the state is usually the most expensive, and (2) there is a $3.999 station in the same town, a 60-cent differential.
Oh, and I saw it as low as $3.579 here in Dayton.
