BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Marcia Wallace of "The Bob Newhart Show" fame was honored by the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Saturday for helping educate Americans about the importance of early cancer detection and inspiring others through her 20 years as a breast cancer survivor.

Wallace, who voices schoolteacher Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, said she keeps up a steady pace of speaking engagements to promote vigilance even in an age of improved cancer testing and treatment.

In accepting the Gilda Radner Courage Award, she said she was fortunate to catch her cancer at an early stage and encourages people to "use all the tools" to give themselves the same advantage.

"My message is very early detection. I beat that drum," Wallace said. The Gilda Radner Courage Award, named for the late comedienne, recognizes a cancer patient whose public battle has given hope to cancer patients and has focused public attention on cancer. Past recipients include Ted Kennedy Jr., Scott Hamilton, Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, actress Rue McClanahan and Buffalo Bills general manager Marv Levy.

This is so cool! She has done so much to help others whose family members are cancer patients. I especially enjoyed reading her book, "Don't Look Back, I'm Not Going That Way", when my husband was going through cancer treatments a little over a year ago. It helped me a lot. Marcia has beaten breast cancer herself, but she also watched her husband Dennis (Denny) die of pancreatic cancer, the cancer from hell. I was able to hear her at one of the speeches she gave in Orange County last September, and then meet and chat with her briefly afterwards.

Right on, Marcia!

I have just finished reading Marcia's book and loved it. What an interesting, crazy, funny, wild life this lady has lived! I'm so sorry that she lost her great love so early but am glad that she has a wonderful son. I was born the year after the Bob Newhart Show ended but have loved it since I discovered the DVDs. Of all the characters, I think I identify with Carol the most.

Thank you Marcia for sharing your story and using it to promote the importance of early detection and the importance of loved ones. Keep it up...and keep smiling!!
