Flo got so upset that Henry and Lena were living together but weren't married. These people were in their 60's not teenagers. It was weird that Florida got so upset. She nearly ruined Thanksgiving.

Yes, she was a little over the top. I can understand her being a Christian and trying to do the right thing and live right, but these 2 elderly people were in love, and because of the system, could not get married. I'm glad everything worked out for them in the end, though.

They were visiting from New Orleans. What would you like them to do?
Ireneparalegal

Exactly. They lived together as a couple, why would he not invite his "woman" to spend the night? It's not Henry's fault the system made them live like that.

They may have had $$ for bus fare, doesn't mean they had extra $$$ for hotel, even if it was just one person. The whole situation was because of the fact that social security was the cause for them not getting married. I can see if they were a young couple like Keith and Thelma, but these were old folks who would love to be married but couldn't.

Exactly. :D Which is why I stated that in my above post. The issue here was these were old folks living on social security. Hopefully Solomon, you won't ever be in that situation.

That was a big issue in the early 1970s. It was on another show --with Burt Mustin playing the man on welfare --or maybe that was a pilot for series that didn't sell?
But I wonder --there was a movement for that situation to change --so that older people didn't have to fear losing some of the SS benefits, just because they married. Does anyone know?
:mumble:
There STILL is an annoying rule, where, even if the person dies on the LAST day of the month, they get cheated out of that whole month's Social Security payment! My dad died on Feb 27, and yeah, got docked that month's pay!
:livid: :angryfire  :cuss: :explode:

I totally agree. He should have asked Florida if it was alright to bring Lena in the first place. You just don't show up at someone's home with another person that they don't know about. And then don't ask if it's ok if you bring them along, let alone spend the night.

You do bring up a very good point there. Also, he should have asked Florida. It would have shown consideration and respect for Florida and the household. There was no telling what Florida would have said.

I agree with an original poster. I think it had more to do with the two of them sleeping together that anything. Lena walks in asks "where's our room" That's like bringing your girlfriend/boyfriend to your parents house and sleeping in the same bed. My parents are in their 70's and I remember my mother talking about that episode saying the exact same thing.

In defense of Lena, she may have assumed they had a room because Henry may have told her so. He may have said, "We are going to visit and spend the night at my daughter-in-law's house."
However, she was totally ignorant for calling the man TIGER EVANS, as if the whole world would know who the hell that was.

I don't think she was ignorant for calling him Tiger....that was her little pet name for him. But of course Florida and family didn't know that. Lena may not have even known that Henry had not been a part of their lives. You can't just call her ignorant, when Henry may not have told her a lot about his past.

I am only referring to her ignorance in calling him a pet name that only she and Henry knew abt. I have pet names for my boyfriend and I know for a fact, that no one else knows what those names are. I am positive also, that a man wouldn't tell family what his pet name is. That is between two lovers, two spouses, etc.

Well, we know my brother's girlfriend's pet name for him, and it's not a big deal in my family. We don't care who knows, actually. So I guess it depends on the family as to whether they know pet names or not.

Yes sometimes she was little too moral for her own good. Like when James found the money and kept some of it. She made him give it back. Now you know if my husband had found some money, and kept some, I would not have asked him to give back what he kept out. Especially if we could have put it to good use. They were having financial problems, and that $2500 could have gone a long way back in the 70's.

I hear that. I am not going to play "moral games" here...I WOULD HAVE KEPT THE MONEY HAD I FOUND IT!!!!!! :D Being in that situation where money was tight as the pants on James, most definitely. It's not like they were going to spend the money on booze or drugs or something stupid or frivolous.

Exactly. This was one time James should have told Florida to STHU (shut the hell up and STHD (sit the hell down). I know she was supposed to be a Christian and all and she was just doing her "Christian" duty. But I think the man above would have understood. Then maybe when they got back on their feet, they could give a generous donation to the church.
