I thought it would be interesting to post some of the most compelling Doe Network cases in your opinions. Of course there are so many to choose from so I'll just post them as I find them. Here's one I recently came across that sounds interesting. Any thoughts on this one - do any of you believe Reneer's story?

That's a good one, CD. You know, I don't know THAT much about polygraphs, but I did have two psychology teachers tell me how to pass one even if I was lying. (Not me specifically-- we were studying polygraphs as methods of determining guilt or innocence in class.) I think it's certainly possible that someone can pass a polygraph while lying.
However, my gut tells me that this guy is telling the truth. It would make sense for DeWayne to disappear, especially if he killed the two girls. On the other hand... anyone else getting a Marvin Gabrion vibe from this guy? Everyone associated with the case is turning up missing.....

Weird question: If I go into the "unidentified victims" section on the Doe Network website, will I see pics of dead bodies? I would like to look at the cases, but I'm terrified of what I'll see.

Its not a weird question. I have been on that part of Doe several times and I never remember seeing an actual photo of a corpse. In fact I was just on there. Most of the photos appear to be clay moldings when they put clay over an unidentified skull or composite sketches. I'm not saying they don't look creepy because some of them do but there are no actual pictures of dead people that I can recall.
Another case that was an update on Doe. Here's an article:
http://www.rickross.com/reference/false_memories/fsm106.html
This happened not too far from me. I found it strange that she went missing and her psychologist did at the same time but they didn't seem to broadcast the latter fact much at all. Certainly not your typical case, she seems to convince Robin that she has been abused (who knows whether there's any validity to it) and then takes off with her??!! Whats even more strange is not too long ago they did find Robin living in another state under an assumed name but didn't mention whether the psychologist was with her or even any mention of the psychologist. I believe the psychologist did leave her family behind as well so I really don't understand why they disappeared together. So strange...

Very interesting case. What is so frustrating is with these cold cases is they give you so little info. I mean was there any suspicion directed at any of her family members? Did anyone see her at the airport? I know its been 34 years now but I wish they would give some more info. My guess is she may have been abducted at the airport and never made it on the plane. I guess its also possible with her age that she could have been a runaway. I wonder if her sister dropped her off at the airport or went inside with her. I couldn't find much on the net about her but since she's on doe that means she's still missing. :(

Here's one about the disappearance of a college student in Vermont that coincides with other strange disappearances and a death in the same region, sometimes referred to as the "Bennington Triangle".

The Indiana Dunes State Park was one of my favorite place to visit growing up. I didn't hear about these cases until just recently:
http://www.doenetwork.us/cases/662dfin.html
Like the The Springfield Three, someone was able to get these women to go with them. Somehow, this individual was witnesses by a lot of other people but has escaped justice.
Somewhere out there, there is an evil man who must be feeling quite smug.

You will occasionally come across what's clearly a doctored photo of a deceased individual on the DoeNetwork. -They'll change the eyes, hairstyle, sometimes add a collar...but in those cases it's obvious that the photo was of an undecomposed body with no visible trauma to begin with. And the rest (the majority) are sketches or clay reconstructions. However I usually tend to find those to be even more disturbing.

Yes! I remember it being featured in a quick segment on Unsolved Mysteries when I was a kid! It always stuck with me, too. I figure he's just never been reported missing. If he was hitching across country alone to follow the Dead, he may have already been living a transient or runaway lifestyle. The fact that he could have began his travels from pretty much any point in the country won't help identify him, either. I wonder if the 2 Carolines are still in touch. Obviously and unfortunately they haven't been identified. I'll bet if this case got some new media publicity it finally could be solved. Maybe at this point someone out there would be starting to worry about why this kid never called home or got in touch with anyone after this long.
For some reason the picture of him reminded me of a similarly haunting case from DoeNetwork- another young man, probably runaway who was murdered in Louisiana. Warning: I get the feeling the photo is a slightly-altered photo of the actual deceased but if that won't bother you please check it out... http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/8umla.html
Funny you should mention that one. When I was looking for the profile I posted, I ran across yours thinking it was the same person! That is a compelling case. Three boys killed in the same way. Hmmmmm. I used to live near Gulfport.
You're right, if the case could get more media exposure, he may be identified. I did read a rumor elsewhere that his family knows what happened to him, but they haven't claimed his body or given his name to LE. That breaks my heart. :(

No. I was talking about the Virginia victim. I read on Websleuths that someone believed to be a family member called the ME's office about him. Conjecture seems to point more towards not being able to afford the burial costs. Anything is possible though. How could anyone disown someone so completely as to not claim their body? That's just too sad to think about.
I think our Louisiana Doe is the victim of a serial killer. He could be from anywhere too.
Completely off topic, my dad lived in Gonzales and Reserve Louisiana when I was younger. I loved visiting there every summer.

Websleuths, huh? I haven't been there. Sounds interesting. Unsolved crimes, I assume? That's terrible about the family of VA Jason if it's true. Maybe his lifestyle was something they just couldn't accept. -Drug use (Grateful Dead follower), rejection of religion, maybe he was gay? Some people just don't care about anything- even family. I know it's sad and we luckily/presumably have loving family but there's alot of disfunction behind a lot of closed doors out there. Maybe he was a burden to them. Maybe his only living relative was a chronically alchoholic parent who couldn't function enough to deal with it. Maybe a sibling involved in illegal activity, afraid to come forward to the cops. Maybe I've got quite an imagination!
Did you happen to check out the link I attached? I guess that's the real Orange County!
Websleuths deals in unsolved crimes, disappearances and cold cases. I read the boards there, but I don't have access to the magic rock that makes registration work. I'd love to participate in their discussions, but registration isn't easy.
I looked at the suicide case too. The unidentified cases always pull at my heart strings. Especially the suicides. Sometimes, I think I'm too emotional for my own good, those cases really get to me.

Sounds like the DoeNetwork as far as registration. I've visited it literally hundreds of times over the years and it finally just recently dawned on me to get in on their message boards. There's currently notice explaining that due to the overwhelming number of applications recieved they would no longer (at least for the time being) be accepting new members. Drat! :grr: Oh well, that's why I signed up here. (Can you tell I just discovered the "More" option on smilies?)

I remember the "Grateful Dead boy" (no pun intended) well - his case always sort of stayed with me, too. The cases of these poor unidentified people just break my heart. They either have no one to mourn them, or a family out there that's grieving and doesn't know what happened. I'm not sure which is sadder.
This one, more than any, has haunted me ever since I saw it, especially since this poor girl may have been mentally challenged, and the last few weeks of her life were very difficult.
http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/199ufwi.html
This one also saddens me. This man died sad and alone. There's got to be someone out there who misses him and wonders where he is.

This girl's case has stuck with me, perhaps because she was found on my birthday (granted, two years before I was born).

I remember this case being profiled on Unsolved Mysteries:
http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/470uffl.html

Definately a sad case. For a victim who was presumed killed close to the time she was discovered I find it strange that the estimated age range listed is so broad. It's also interesting that they can tell a person could have had a cognitive disability once they've died. It doesn't sound like she was necessarily being cared for by anyone who would have reported her; unless they're the one(s) who killed her. (Maybe to cash her disability check? Just a theory)

These are basically photos of this man. I looked at a link to this case a while back and it showed the actual pictures of him on the slab or the gurney or whatever but it was the same minus the clothing. So disturbing. Such a clear picture of his face and no one recognized him by now?? If they flashed his photo on America's Most Wanted this weekend I'd bet someone would call in with his real name. I'm sorry if the photos were disturbing. Some of the reconstructions from the Doe Network do come from post-mortem photographs, but are usually "cleaned up" so they don't look so unsettling.
And yes, I'm familiar with the "Dana Point" Jane Doe. I first saw her story on Unsolved Mysteries. So sad.

Oh, no, no- I wasn't trying to say I was disturbed. My point was that even with a photo of the person (instead of a sketch or other form of reconstruction) they still weren't able to find out his identity. But I assume that's mostly because he only got local coverage where he died and was almost definately not from the area.
I didn't know "Dana Point" was featured on UM!!! Oh my gosh! Can you tell me; were there any other interesting facts or clues that aren't stated on Doenetwork? I'm sorry I missed that one...

Yes... America's Unknown Child. I'm familiar with his story. He has become something of a poster child for all the unidentified victims out there. If you haven't yet, you can read the full story at http://americasunknownchild.net/. It's absolutely tragic what happened to him, but it is also nice to see how much effort a local society of detectives has put into not only attempting to determine his identity, but also to give him a proper reburial in a place of honor at a Philadelphia cemetery. (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=10810&GRid=7207817&)
The Lyle Stevik case has haunted me for some time too. I can't imagine what would make somebody so distressed that they would check in to a remote hotel and commit suicide. His case made me cry when I first read about it. It still does, actually. He and the Grateful Dead boy ( I call him Jason Doe) seem to pop up every time I research something relating to missing people.
The Sodder children, now there's a mystery and a half. The story is so compelling and so bizarre. I don't think the five missing Sodder children died in the fire. I don't have a good theory of what happened to them though.

I hope this link works, but this one is so tragic. Just a little girl. She was seen "playing" in traffic?

Where did you get that she was playing in traffic? I just read she was seen RUNNING in traffic. That could imply that she was being chased or that she was just careless. (If you have something that suggests playing, I would love to see it. Maybe it would provide more clues!)
This really is a sad case, though. I would like to see her identified.

Has anyone ever entertained the possibility that the death of "Lyle Stevik" could be related to 9/11? His date of death was noted as September 16, 2001: five days after the attacks. I know I could be really stretching it here, but perhaps he lost someone in the attack?
Just noticed the date and thought I'd put it out there. :)
There was a huge thred on Lyle at Web Sleuths and lots of people brought up the 9/11 connection. One theory was that he was supposed to take part in the attacks, but that seems a bit far-fetched. It's very possible he lost a loved one and decided to go as far away as he could and end it all.

No I wasn't implying she was literally playing, that's why I had it in quotes! Sorry for the misunderstanding! It's just odd she was running in the traffic, the only reasonable explanation is she was being chased like you said. I dunno, a good facial recreation too, doesn't someone miss her????

Or maybe he wanted people to think that he had died in the 9/11 attacks rather than knowing he committed suicide. I am reminded of perhaps the most disturbing postcard ever featured on Post Secret which read, "Everyone who knew me before 9/11 believes I am dead." Clearly the person who wrote it is alive, but maybe Lyle's family also had reason to believe he was in New York at the time of the attacks. If they thought he was killed in the WTC collapse, they wouldn't look for him elsewhere. Very sad case indeed.

Well, no one said she was playing in traffic. She was running down the highway. Perhaps she was suffering from some kind of delusion (drug-induced or due to a psychological illness?) or had been kidnapped and had jumped out of a car in an effort to escape her abductor?
As far as Lyle, I suppose the best thing would be to contact the media in the area where he was found, as well as the surrounding states -- newspapers, TV stations, heck, even Classmates.com might be worth a shot. The information for him says that his hair was very neatly trimmed. Perhaps he'd been to a barber recently? Having brought a toothbrush with him, it seems that he wanted to be in the best possible condition when he was found. It's a long shot, but perhaps a barber or a hairdresser nearby might remember him. Also, I wonder if the Lyle Stevick connection was investigated -- Lyle Stevick (note the different spelling) is a character from a book called "You Must Remember This" by Joyce Carol Oates. The book obviously had a big impact on the young man, so I wouldn't be surprised if he owned a copy. Perhaps the families of missing people matching "Lyle's" description could be questioned to see if the missing person owned this book. Just a few ideas.

Lyle's case has always intrigued me as well, but I believe that the 9/11 connection is very possible. With all the chaos that surrounded 9/11, it could've been easy for him to disappear and his family still be awaiting information about him in regards to 9/11. His eyes are what caught my attention the most when I first saw his post-mortem. He has a very distinct bone structure. I think that he was probably very attractive in life as well, and easily stuck out in a crowd.

Wow, that is sad. Being that she was a sociopath, perhaps the dovorce was so bad in her eyes she wanted to get rid of any and all connections to her husband. A child is possibly the strongest link and reminder to a spouse. She may have wanted to sever all those ties.

Fifty people hanging out in a hallway. Long broad hallway. Lots of folks talking, chatting about this and that. Children at play with neighbors, adults socializing, passing time and watching the children. Or were they?

Little Vinyette Trudy Teague was just eighteen months old. Crawling most likely, perhaps trying to walk on unsteady feet and reaching for a helping hand. We know she was playing in the hallway with those other fifty people. Among those fifty people were two uncles, two aunts, and cousins. And then the phone rang. Grandma went to answer and when she returned, Vinyette was gone. And remains gone. Lost somewhere? Taken somewhere? and why did no one see?
or since someone must have seen...why has the story not been told?
Please read her story. She never got the press some other cases get. But she deserves to be remembered. She was taken, obviously, from the Robert Taylor Homes in Chicago (since demolished) on 25 June 1983. She deserves justice.

Wow Meg! That first case of Kyle Clinkscales (The name itself has a weird ring to it) is like something out of a bad made for TV movie with all those twists and turns.

The whole case is incredibly creepy--finding the credit card in the middle of nowhere eleven years later...that phone call....ugh. Poor, poor Kyle. :(
