I have been watching both seasons 1 & 2, and I have noticed alot of similarities between the two sitcoms.
1. When Louie meets Zeena's parents. The mother threatens to hire someone to kill him. In Cheers, they did the same storyline with Frasier's mom threatening to kill Diane.
2. In Taxi, Alex becomes a thrill seeker and jumps out of an airplane. In Cheers, Sam and the gang become thrillseekers and jump out of an airplane.

Some of the characters can be said to be somewhat similar too. Carla is quite nasty, and Louie is nasty (Louie is probably the nastier of the two, though.)
Elaine is quite a cultured lady (although she's not snobbish and stuck-up like Diane can be) - but she's involved in the art business.
Tony can be seen as being a little similar to Woody (neither of the characters was extremely bright.)
Alex could be seen as having a bit of Sam in him, as he was a sort of father figure to everyone in the garage, and Sam was a kind of father figure to Woody,
Also, Christopher Lloyd appeared in the two-parter at the end of season two of Cheers as the painter Philip Semenko.

Don't forget the actor who played Jeff Bennett, also had a cameo role on Cheers.

Keep in mind that both shows shared many of the same producers and writers, so it's not unfathomable that they'd recycle plotlines. There are no original storylines anymore, so they probably refashioned old plots for the shows.

Well, I know that James Burrows was a part of both shows. Ted Danson and George Wendt both guest starred on Taxi as well.

I always felt that since Taxi and Cheers shared so many behind the scenes psople, both shows were very similar.
Both shows were solid ensemble comedys and the characters were very down to earth and realistic.

Did he? When was that?
It was the episode where there was a costume party at Cheers. Cliff fell in love with a woman wearing a mask. Jeff was dressed in all African garb.

Besides Ted Danson & George Wednt guest starring, Rea Perlman also was on some episodes as Louies girlfriend, Zena.
And, there was a"Taxi" script that was never filmed because NBC cannceled the show, so they changed it some, and filmed it as an episode of "Cheers". It was the episode "Miss Boston Barmaid" and it was the one where Diane was named Miss Boston Barmaid. In "Taxi", Elaine was named Miss New York City Cabdriver, or something like that.
Also, in the last season of "Taxi" NBC showed it right after "Cheers" on Thursday nights.
And last but not least, both shows were filmed at Paramount.
(in fact, the "Cheers" set was right across from where they filmed "Star Trek" for all you trekys:) )
