the time it was created. At the time this show premeired, it's parent show was a HIT, the first spinoff of the parent show was a hit so naturally by this show being the 2nd spinoff, fans of MTM and Rhoda were going to watch this show too. So that probably explains the #7 ranking after it's first season. Try putting this show on DVD or on TV LAND and the numbers would be a lot different.
BTW: Having RHODA as a Lead In wasn't bad either for a NEW SHOW-lol

I agree with everything you said. It had a successful reputation behind it. That is why it did as well as it did.

Exactly, this show would be on the shelf forever in Best Buy if released on DVD-lol By season 2 viewers quickly realized this show was not going anywhere and turned to something else

If Cloris Leachman died, MAYBE it would generate a little interest. People are sometimes buyers out of morbid curiosity.

Phyllis couldn't compete with Little House on the Prarie, Six Million Dollar Man, and or Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley during season 2-lol

I think the 2nd spinoff from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" generated a lot of interest,so it got the show off to a good start.
Watching the recent releases of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" on DVD,I hadn't realised that Phyllis' appearances in season 3,were just 4 episodes and only 3 episodes each in season 4 and 5,due to Chloris being in such demand elsewhere.
I think putting Phyllis in the office in the 2nd season was a bad idea, the photography studio was better, thank goodness we still had Audrey,Jonathan and Mother Dexter in season 2.

Why the Office a bad idea?

Mother Dexter was the best one on the show. It's just as well that the show ended after 2 years because she died right before then.

The 2nd season of Phyllis was bad because putting her in an office, the characters in the office was unlikable, and the character of Phyllis changed radically that season where she was more serious not as scatterbrained as in the first season and on MTM. Plus there was a change in Cloris' acting when she cut her hair and wore the Dorothy Hamel style. Overall Phyllis was not a good spinoff. That show was doomed with too much tragedy.

Well 2 out of the 3 spinoffs lasted 4 seasons so that's not too bad

Having Lars die did give it a sombre start,if the show was done now, think Lars would have left Phyllis.
I think Phyllis didn't have a Rhoda character,to trade insults with although in season 2,she did have Harriett.
It would have been great to have Rhoda make a guest apperance, after all Phyllis guested at Rhoda's wedding.
I saw the entire run of Phyllis, always found Mother Dexter,Jonathan Audrey really funny, liked Julie(both versions)and just felt putting Phyllis in an office, limited the character, after all she had a real estate licence on MTMS.
Chloris gave it her all though and she won an Emmy for the first season of Phyllis, well deserved.

Well the fact that Mary guest starred on Phyllis they defintely could have had Rhoda guest star
