NEW YORK - Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” ranks as the most controversial film of all time, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The magazine ranks the 25 films that have most shocked, disgusted and divided moviegoers, in its June 16 issue, on newsstands Monday.

EW writes that Gibson’s grisly depiction of Jesus’ betrayal and crucifixion ignited “a culture-war firestorm unrivaled in Hollywood history.” Despite — or to some degree, because of — the religious uproar, the 2004 film grossed over $370 million at the U.S box office.

Coming in second is Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange.” Kubrick’s 1971 futuristic film is famous for a violent scene during which “Singin’ in the Rain” is played. Reports of copycat crimes led to the movie’s withdrawal from distribution in Britain.

Oliver Stone has the unique distinction of landing twice on the list: 1991’s “JFK,” ranked at No. 5, and 1994’s “Natural Born Killers,” at No. 8.

“The Da Vinci Code,” now in theaters, charts at No. 13 for the debates spawned by its tale of a Catholic cover-up. Another recent film, “United 93,” ranks at No. 16 because of concerns that it came too soon after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Also among the 25: “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Deep Throat,” “The Last Temptation of Christ,” “The Deer Hunter,” “Basic Instinct,” “Do the Right Thing” and “Kids.”

China has ordered the controversial film that has smashed worldwide box-office records, pulled from its theaters, a movie industry executive said 08 June 2006.

Surprised the movie about the 12 or 13 year old prostitute was not on there. I can't remember the title though.

The number one choice doesn't surprise me at all. The Passion definitely ignited the most controversy in any film Iv'e seen in my lifetime.

Cannibal Holocaust was banned in over 60 countries for it's extreme graphic violence and brutal torture to animals. I'm surprised that film didn't make the list.

I'm surprised Adrian Lyne's 1997 remake of "Lolita" isn't on the list. Becasue of the subject matter, it had a hard time finding a distributor and after a very limited release had its big premire on Showtime.

I was just reading about that movie yesterday. At first I thought I was reading about a documentary, so I had a very sick feeling in my stomache, but after finding out it wasn't real, that calmed me down. It is surprising to me that it was only listed at 20. If it would have had a big Hollywood type opening, I have no doubt it would be higher up on the list.

I'm not surprised. IMO I think the reason is most people don't want to reflect on Christ's suffering, what He went through. It's funny though, how most people could go to see a real hack 'em up horror movie and it doesn't bother them at all. But have a movie about religion come out, and everyone starts complaining. Figures:rolleyes:

Where the heck is the Faces of Death movie series??? That showed real clips of autopsies, plane crashes, assassinations, and even animal torture (I'm sickened to say). :( Surely, that would have to be considered far more controversial than anything on this list. And what the heck was controversial about Alladin?? Very odd list.

Alladin was controversial in that many Arab anti-defamation groups, etc. thought lyrics in one of the songs about Arabia depicted them as "bloodthirsty killers" ("We'll cut off your nose if we don't like your face" in the original lyrics), which was all a joke. So they made them change it.

I can definitely understand that. I made the mistake of watching part 1 on DVD about a week ago, and it was easily the most shocking DVD I ever saw. 100 times worse than any of the other movies that Iv'e seen, that made this list.

Oh, I see!! I thought maybe it had something to do with the whole controversy of Disney supposedly secretly putting in the line: "Take your clothes off" in one of the scenes, but that didn't seem like it would be controversial enough for it to make the list. Thanks for explaining the real reason!! Now it makes sense.

so what is controversial about Alladin? I have been trying to figure it out. The only thing I can think of is it might stereotype Mid Easterners or something.

Controversy

One of the verses of the opening song "Arabian Nights" was censored because of political sensitivity. Following protests from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American-Arab_Anti-Discrimination_Committee), (ADC) the lyrics were changed in July 1993 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993) from "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face/It's barbaric, but, hey, it's home," in the original release to "Where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense/It's barbaric, but, hey, it's home." The new change was seen on the 1993 video release of this title. The original lyric was intact on the initial CD soundtrack release that predated the movie's theatrical release and subsequent protests. The soundtrack was re-released at the time of the DVD release of the film; on the re-released soundtrack, the edited lyric is used.

It is rumored that during a scene in the film, Aladdin whispers "C'mon, good teenagers, take off your clothes". According to Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/aladdin.htm), Aladdin actually says "good kitty" to Rajah the tiger, only to have a second voice say "take off and go...". It has been suggested that this second voice was the Genie's, who at the time was under the balcony and had previously been commenting on what was going on. This dialogue is edited in the DVD version, lessening the chance of misunderstanding. Other Disney films have alleged subtle sexual references.

Also, when Aladdin & Abu are in the Genie's Cave and the lava appears, Abu is seen skipping across the rocks and lava spalshed in front of his, if listened to carefully, he appears to say "Oh ****".

Faces of Death is a set of "movies" that has been established as HOAXES. I recall seeing the set and I too thought it was for real. It has been established though that it wasn't.

Besides, the title of the list is MOVIES, Faces of death is not a movie.

I just watched the Faces Of Death: Fact Or Fiction the other day, and actually most of the footage was very real. The director even explained that the only things in the movie that were re-enacted, were the videos that they couldn't get the rights to, and those were few and far between. I don't know how anyone who has seen any of this series can say that it's a hoax, because most of the footage you can clearly tell is real. Much of it, I had even seen the tamer, and less extreme footage of on news clips, so I know that stuff's real. Some stuff you just can't fake.

Hmm, I always thought documentaries were movies. I just thought it had it's own name sort of like drama's, comedy's, etc. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Wait a minute, Fahrenheit 9/11 is on the list, and it was a documentary.
