I had a misconception about Penny protecting her mother. I thought that Penny was saying that she fell down the stairs, burned her arm from hot chocolate, bumped against the stove and tripped over her cat twice so that her mother would not abuse her even more harshly for telling the truth. I thought that she lied so that her mother would go a little easier on her when she is attacking her. That is so not the case. I got to watch the "Evans get Involved-Parts 1-4, and I found out that Penny lies so that her mother will not be put in jail.:( She loves her mother very much though she abuses her. I realized this when Penny was safe in the closet and she heard her mother crying and she came out of the closet and said, "Don't worry mama. I'm right here. Don't cry.":( I think I almost burst into tears right then and there.:( She cares about her mother so much that she showed her face in front of her abusive mother after the mother thought she wasn't in the Evans household anymore. That is so sad that she would sacrifice herself so her mother wouldn't cy.(She knew her mother would abuse her if she showed her face.):( In another part, Penny says her prayers and during them, she says, "Watch over mama, amen."

The thing I didn't like about these episodes, is that in the end, they made Penny's mother seem like a sympathetic character.

I guess it added to the intensity of the storylines

I think it was more Norman Lear and his very liberal views.

I had a very hard time being sympathetic to Lenola Gordon. I wanted to scream at her, "And who's fault is that?" (when she says something about having a baby at 16, with no money to her name, blah, blah, blah)
