THE REAL McCOYS aired on ABC (1957-1962) and CBS (1962-1963). It starred
three-time Oscar winner Walter Brennan as Grandpa Amos McCoy, Richard
Crenna (of OUR MISS BROOKS) as his grandson Luke; and Kathy Nolan, as Luke's
wife Kate. It was the first "rural comedy": a West Virginia mountain family picked up stakes and moved to a ranch in California's San Fernando Valley.
Unlike the Clampett family (THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES came along about a year
before this series ended), the McCoys were not rich and did not live in a
mansion; and it didn't poke fun at itself or at the rural sitcom genre. It
was "a simple comedy show about simple people who cared about simple
things" (in the words of GREAT TV SITCOM BOOK author Rick Mitz). In 1962, when the show moved to CBS, Luke became a widower
(Kathy Nolan had left the show over a salary dispute).
just what was it that "kate" was suppose to have died of, and how were Hassie and little Luke written out

In the final season on CBS, they mention that Kate died and Luke was a widower, but that was all. No details. Hassie was seen moving out of the house and going away to college. But poor Little Luke got no farewell or mention at all! He just disappeared into that big TV studio in the sky. ;)

Actually he was briefly mentioned in the first episode of the last season. As Hassie was getting ready to leave, it's mentioned that she'll be dropping some home cooked food off for Little Luke at the Army Base.
Since he was still pretty young when the previous season ended, it seems as though the audience was supposed to believe that quite some time had passed since the ending of the previous season and the start of the last one.
