True crime shows of today....

First post,love the board!

At the young age of twenty one,I've been into these type of shows for as long as I can remember. Of course the glory days were pre-teen late 80's Unsolved Mysteries and Rescue 911 at night,and then early 90's sunday afternoon Unsolved with Ghostwriter on pbs,those were the days.;) I also thoroughly enjoyed the many American Justice and 20th century type shows. And from watching many of these over the years,is it just me,or do the true crime shows of today seemed watered down compared to years past? I think i've been spoiled by the great production and story telling of Unsolved and the real time nature of American Justice.

Maybe I was just young but it seemed like in the early 90's there were tons of programs that showed alot of file footage,and not just of crime,but major events around the world like assinations and cults like Jim jones,etc,they would cover serial killers,and prisons around country,pretty gruesome stuff. They actually still show some of those old mid-90's american justice episodes that were so good,but the ones of today are tamer in my opinion.

I do dig Cold case files,Notorious on Bio,investigative reports and *sometimes* city conf. I got burnt out on Forensic files a year ago,used to really be into the court tv half hour shows but I am one of those Unsolved Mysteries fans who only liked a good Unexplaned death, or wanted ect..no paranormal. Court tv over did it with their psychic detectives and that was a turn off. Plus their re-enactments put me sleep.

I really do miss Unsolved,Stack and his bunch were truly ahead of their time,much like,but in a different way Rod Sterling and Twilight Zone,two of my favorite shows of all time.

One final thought,I need some help of a name of a case that I KNOW someone knows about. This file footage was played on virtually every true crime show in the early 90's. If I remember correctly there was a woman,who was being interviewed by the local tv news reporter outside,as it was being filmed out of nowhere behind them,they see the woman's boyfriend or husband pull up in a white car,he gets out and shoots the woman on tv. This was big news back then,anybody remember it?? I think they had a court battle or something but I was young.

I was a big fan of Rescue 911 in its heyday as well. Shatner's voice made that show. It started reairing a few months back on DHC (I don't think its on there anymore though) and I seem to have lost my nerve to watch it. I would tune in and you would see some cute little girl walking down the road and you just knew something terrible was about to happen so I would change it.

I think you brought up a good point about ones today being more watered down. Now that I think about it they are basically the same types of crimes covered. I, like you, enjoyed the James Jones and historical based ones as well from the past. I was also a big fan of "Justice Files" on Discovery. They would do news topics which covered all types of crimes. I still see it airing once in a while and always try to tune in.

I do love Forensic Files but I think CourtTV is trying to hard with their "North Mission Road" and "Body of Evidence". Its not that I dislike those shows although I rarely watch them but we don't need 4 or 5 different shows that are all basically the same thing. Thats why "I-Detective" was unique in it let us test our skills at solving crimes.

Anyway I've rambled on enough. I will try to find out more info for you about that case (as I'm now curious again too) if the other posters here don't remember.

I happened to be watching that on CourtTV's Anatomy of Crime. The name of the episode was "Eyewitness to Crime," which aired this past Friday night. It featured numerous cases where crime was caught on tape.

It was disturbing to see a woman being interivewed on camera, and then, without warning, being shot to death by her husband. The husband was visiting his daughter's grave.

Regrettably, I don't remember the names (of either the killer or victim). But I checked the CourtTV schedule, and discovered that the epsiode will be shown again this coming Sunday (March 26) at 7:00 PM (Eastern Time).

Thanks for the help guys:thumbsup:,it was a very shocking event and i'm sad to read that the woman didn't survive. That's weird that I mention it and Kane happens to catch it last week,thanks for the heads up for sunday. I haven 't seen that footage since the mid 90's,but of course the Betty Broderick story comes on like fifty times a year.:rolleyes:

The case you are referring to occurred in Florida. I have the court case and the shooting on VHS. I happened to call into Court TV and was able to speak with Nancy Grace live and ask a question. My question was What took so long for this man to go to trial since he had committed the crime almost 8 years before? Nancy responded saying that was a great question and she turned it over to the correspondent who was at the courthouse. The response was the "man" had been getting delays and motions for delays, firing his attorneys, etc. which only prolonged the matter for which he was eventually convicted. I remember when the murder actually took place and how it was shown on the news. It was horrific. the news only showed so much of the tape. What I have on VHS is the entire interview from beginning to the news reporter and camera guy calling the cops and being in a state of panic. The newswoman wasn't interviewing the woman who was killed. They were onsite at the cemetary talking to the father when the wife showed up and the newscaster was shoving the microphone in her face and they were following her as she went to visit her daughter's grave. That's when the father came from behind and put nine bullets into her head.

I liked that show. I remember watching those reruns on the USA network in 1996. That show ran on CBS for three years (1990-1993), but I didn't see it during its primetime run. I think it's an underrated true crime show.

I'm just getting more into Cold Case Files.....especially the good Zodiac Killer segment. I just purchased 'The Most Infamous Cases' of Cold Case Files on DVD and am impressed. As I said, they do an exceptional Zodiac Killer Segment.

That one just might stand to UM. But, I'd still say UM is my favorite, that's another forum, tho.
