Naomi! I loved her feistiness and passion in the NBC years--I wish she didn't mellow out in cable, but that's probably more realistic since she had lived with Mama for so long and knew how to handle living with her best.

Aunt Fran was my 2nd favorite! What great lines she had...in the cable years, Mama was probably more of my favorite.

MAMA of course!! That lady always had me rolling on the floor crying with laughter tears. I used to watch mama everyday until they put the show on when I wasn't at home!! I was sooo mad! Plus, I don't even know when the show comes on anymore. At least I have my Golden Girls. My least fav. character is Iola...her voice, her look, her clothes...ugh!!!

I like Mama, Eunice, Ellen, & Aunt Fran, LOL! Eunice was just a mess! That girl needed help. I guess I like Aunt Fran & Ellen because I'm a big Betty White & Rue McClanahan fan... I HATE Iola! What's up with all the pink and "Knock-Knock!" She scares me! I don't like Bubba either... guess I like the original Mama's Family characters (Mama, Aunt Fran, Buzz, Sonya, etc...)

FINALLY someone mentions Vint. I'm telling you, I love Thelma Harper the best, but the early shows when Vint had more of a backbone made me like him too. You notice as Naomi got a little smarter, they made Vint more stupid? Talk about role reversal! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

I have to say Mama was my favorite character as played by Vicki Lawerence. I was such a big Carol Burnett fan, and this series was a spinoff from that show. But Vicki played that role to the tee, she was the epitome of mean mother in laws.

I personally hated the show and the way they would tare into ed and his job at the hardware store at least ed had a career.Eunice and mama bickered because they had nothing to do but bitch and complain about their lott in life.I did love the people on the show though-Vickie lawrence,Carol,Ken berry,b.White and Especially Harvey Korman-my dad.He hated the sketches on the burnett show and the show itself. The best part was the family behind the scenes many who I have known since the burnett show.I'm actually older then the burnett show by 4 months. The Writers,Directors Dave Powers and Roger beatty who stage manages for my dad and Tim Conway on their tour right now.The best part was talking and being around the Betty Whites and Carol burnett's of the World. They are as gifted as they are genuinely the sweetest most compassionate thoughtful people as is The Ken berry's of the World.its rare to say when you can say your favorite performer is also one of your favorite people. The wedding where vint and naomi get married is one of the funniest moments ever.if anyone out there wants to email me to inquire about what anyone from the burnett show is up to or has a question email me at CHPK@erols.com.if you want to see Harvey Korman and Tim Conway let me know where you live and I can tell you where they are appearing near you.or any questions about me or my dad without giving away to much imfo out of respect to my dads privacy I would be happy to do so.

First I would have to say Mama and then Vint. Mama was so funny and she always had something to say whether you wanted to hear it or not. It was always funny but sometimes she could just be plain mean. Vint was my favorite because he was very meek and small. Everything about him was funny, but the thing that drove me absolutley crazy about him was his eyes he had the most beautiful blue eyesand I could have died!! He would just look at the screen and there would be this overwhelming sense of meekness and kindness and that was what I liked I like Mama because she made up for what ever Vint lacked in personalty

I Love Carol Burnett!

Hmm...this is a toughie. Perhaps a better question for me would be which character(s) I like the least. Honestly, I really don't care for Vint & Naomi (NBC), Buzz & Sonya, and Fran. I know it sounds harsh for being a fan of this show, but I honestly just found those characters all to be very shallow and really added nothing to the overall value or laugh factor of the show. It obivously revolved around Mama as it rightly should have, the rest were just there for "background" IMO. I still hold that the syndication years were better. There were some funny moments during the NBC years, but now that I've seen every episode, I can say I like the later years better. As for my fav characters...

1. Thelma (Mama)
2. Iola*
3. Eunice & Ellen
4. Bubba
5. Aunt Effie

*= one particular favorite "Iola" moment, was during the b&w crime show sequence in a 89-90 episode. Iola was almost completely out of character and played a vampish vixen. Anyway, she went to the kitchen and Thelma eventually followed her in there a few minutes later. The table was set and she says:

"While you were gone I decided to whip up some eggplant parmesan"

LOL! I just find that line hysterical! The way she said it, and the fact that eggplant parmesan takes HOURS to make is hilarious!

Wow...yeah, that is kinda harsh! lol

I'm different here...I love Naomi in the NBC years before they softend her and dumbed her down (though not as much as Vint), and I think Frannie has some o' the best one-liners in the series (and just look at her courtroom spotlight moment! ).

And ironically, I find that Mama is more of a background character in a lotta those shows, and quite a few revolve around other characters---Naomi's ex-husband returns, Eunice auditions for a play, Buzz & Sonja have different curfews, etc. The syndicated years seem more like the Mama & Iola comedy team with some supporting characters (for the most part)---but I still love those shows, too! :)

Well, I wasn't trying to be overly harsh. Just stating my opinion and answering the question truthfully. It's a well known fact that Rue did NOT enjoy playing on this show, and rightly so. Her character was just...stupid! I'm sorry, I just think alot of the characters that were dropped when the syndication loop started are just silly, not very well written and didn't have much time in the limelight or time to grow, and obviously the producers must have thought the same...I kinda take that back about Naomi & Vint though, and I actually just meant that I disliked those characters during the NBC years. When syndication started and they turned into rum-dummies, they were a scream!

To me though, the only really worthwhile moments during the NBC years were when Carol Burnett guested as Eunice - you could always be sure of a laugh!

TALLguyinKY
09-24-2003, 03:59 AM
Well, Rue had a hard time on MF because she "didn't know how to play her [Fran]" once they'd changed the character on her, not because the character was "stupid".

I honestly don't see how anyone can not roll at some of her one-liners, and how anyone can prefer the dumbed-down Vint & Naomi to the NBC ones with backbones (lol), but I guess there are "Mama" fans of all types! lol :p

bb25
10-01-2003, 03:36 PM
Well, stupid IMO, I wasn't making a generalization...

Can you give an example of one of her one-liners? I honestly don't remember any truly funny Fran moments, except maybe...

"Well I followed the directions...45 degrees for 350 minutes!"

That was kinda cute, but I don't remember many more...like I said IMO the best moments in the NBC years came from Eunice & Ellen...

TALLguyinKY
10-01-2003, 09:12 PM
Well, first of all, there's her whole scene in the courtroom at the bench!, which culminates in the climactic line, "Two years ago.........I remooooved it!" :rotflmao:

Here are some other fav'rites o' mine:

"Vint & Naomi's Honeymoon"---(in reference to Aunt Effie fallin') "I guess that's what happens when ya get old...and drunk."

--------------------

"Obscene Phone Call"---Vint: "Do you know that last night was the first night that we didn't...th--that we haven't..."

Fran (readin' the paper): "There goes the Guiness book o' records."

--------------------

"The Wedding Part II"---"Well don't look at me, I have been squatting longer than anyone!!"

--------------------

The pilot episode, Frannie's dramatic "Goodbyyye!" to Mama in the living room cracks me up---as does 2) her scream when Mama scares her in "Mama Learns to Drive" as she tries to sneak out!, and 3) her awkward "running away" from Naomi right before Vint & Naomi tell Mama they're movin' out.

--------------------

"The Wedding Part I"---"You know Auntie Fran loves you, Ellen...Auntie Fran loooves youuuuuu!"

--------------------

"A Grave Mistake"---Mama says that Carl's gonna have to bring her a gift........Fran: "Oh Thelma, can he bring it when I'm not home??"

--------------------

"Amateur Night"---"Thelma...what was it really like in there?..."

Welp, those are most o' my fav'rite Frannie moments. :)

I Love Carol Burnett!

Aunt Effie, on after the fall episode, the family was putting together a puzzle of 2 ships. There was a peice missing, but before that Effie stabs Iola with knitting needles. When she was trying to get Effie to knit, and Iola stands up and says excuse me, and hobbles outside and screams, then everyone starts arguing and effie goes to the puzzle and they scream aunt Effie no, and she puts the last peice in and says all done bozo . Then momma says what you like for dinner and she says oatmeal and momma says she is still alittle confused she probabbly means meatloaf.

Aunt Effie All done bozo
Mamma what would you like for dinner?
Aunt Effie oatmeal
Momma She is still alittle confused, she probably means meatloaf.

Rest in Peace Dorthy(Aunt Effie)
