This is the best news that I've heard in a long time. Let's just hope this show doesn't become a victim like Evening Shade and Family Ties did when each one was picked up by seperate cable channels and then dropped after only a couple weeks.
Does anyone know, if ABC Family will air the Valerie episodes?

I guess ABCFAMILY is starting with The Hogan Family episodes because they are alittle more like the shows on abcfamily. They are alittle more "hip" and the kids got older and older, so it's more for "teens.".......They might just want ppl to start to like it now, and then they'll follow the show when "Valerie" actually begins........Does anyone know what episode they're starting with??? Is it the episode when he's in the attic and talking about Valerie after she died. I think it's the premiere of the first yr Valerie wasn't on it......That was sooo sad. I remember watching it a few years back on my Local FOX Channel. And then Val's sister moves in. The show was good, but the first and last seasons, I do have mixed feelings about.

On the blog Pav says they're starting at season three, so who knows if they have the Valerie episodes or not. I sure hope so. I'll have my DVD recorder ready.
I'm still holding out for DVD releases of both Valerie and The Hogan Family, though :)

It was not Valerie's sister, it was Mike's sister Sandy that moves in. That's awesome that The Hogan Family will be back on TV again. It hasn't been on TV since December 1999. I really hope that Valerie / Valerie's Family / The Hogan Family will get released on DVD in season sets.

I know they are suppose to start airing episodes from season 3 and so on when it starts airing on ABC Family. I'm just wondering do you think they will later on show seasons 1 and 2 with Valerie Harper?

This is great, I'm finally going to see this show again, I haven't seen this show since it was on NBC back in the 80s, me and my grandma used to watch is show all the time, and after all this years I'm finally going to see it again, that is excellent. :)

Wow, what timing. I just finished my Growing Pains season 1 set, my Mr. Belvedere's, Cheers will have finished season 11 on Nick at Nite, I'm on my 2nd go-round with Night Court on TV Land. I need new programming!
Time to clear the dvr so I can get my Hogan Family collection going. Hopefully it'll make a full rotation if they're airing 2 eps a day. That's about 40 a month, and they only made five years worth. So by June they should've cranked out the whole run up until 1991.
Sidebar to another comment: yes, the later years weren't as good, especially after the father joined the cast.

My DVD recorder is going to be so busy! At least I'll have episodes on DVD just in case we never get official releases. I'd rather have unedited episodes someday though.

Lol, Daniel-san and Miyagi are legends :). I just had to do it.
Yes, Warner's has so much on their plate I doubt the Hogies will make it to dvd. So hopefully ABCFam will keep it on until at least July. That'll give the three months it needs to do all 110 eps. Altho....Hallmark yanked family ties after only a few weeks :(...
Stupid ratings.

I doubt that will happen. If I recall ABC Family hasn't ever really done that. I bet The Hogan Family will have a pretty decent run.
I do agree though that a DVD release probably isn't in the very near future, but hopefully within the next few years :)

They are starting with the middle of the third season:
April 3 12 noon
"Poetic Injustice" Episode #42
Willie plagiarizes a poem to impress a teacher.
Guest Star: Sal Viscuso
#43 follows
Not to worry, the first 41 episodes will be shown after this first rotation ends. They just want to start off the show with the more "popular" episodes.

I've never seen "The Hogan Family (Valerie)" in such a long time. I remember watching that show when it was on WPIX-TV (channel 11) back in the early 90's. I also remember PAX (now "I") ran that show for a short time, but now great move for ABC Family. I would love to see it.
Alright I first saw this show on TV lands WB marathon, and thought I would like to see more episodes. Although why are they starting from season three? alright gigidy gigidy gigidy goo:dance: :ufo:  :yourock: :thanks: :bouncers :mango party:

The end credits were good, but why not just keep the original end credits?? Since ABC Family wasn't promoting anything on the right side.
Oh well, better than the end credits for most of their other shows, at least.

What about the opening credits? Intact or cut? Valerie's Family or The Hogan Family?
nocomments
04-03-2006, 08:02 PM
Opening credits has "The Hogan Family" title, and are cut short (54 seconds, compared to the usual 1:14).
Funny thing is that the end credits theme played only for the 12:00 PM (ET) episode, and not the 12:30 PM episode. The theme was also horribly looped at the end. They should've at least let the theme play all the way, but oh well. It also would've been best if they just played the normal end credits (they do with Boy Meets World, although most of their end credits is just an addition scene instead of credits with music).
I could've sworn that the 3rd season was in stereo. I had video captured both episodes to burn to DVD later so I can watch them again and again without commercials. The first thing I noticed though, was that both episodes were mono. Unless it really was mono, and I simply thought wrong (it wouldn't be the first time), I don't know.
Besides those small little nitpicks, I enjoyed every minute of The Hogan Family. Last time I saw it was on WB 11, so it's been a while. I look forward to watching it every weekday...

So I'm guessing that they're using the early '90s syndie prints, w/ the shortened openign credits and that the Lorimar Marble b/g logo being plastered over the L-T logo that was supposed to still run oh the 1987-88 eps. aren't they?
And btw, there were actually some eps. where the full credits are ran?

The full intro played at 12:30, though for whatever reason, it sounded time compressed. I clocked the intro at 1:06, which is 8 seconds shorter than the normal intro. The fact that it played in tact at least made me happy.

The only other time that I've seen The Hogan Family in syndication enough to remember it was on Pax. They showed an episode with a Valerie title... The episode was "Bad Timing."
It's supposedly the only Valerie Harper episode to use the title Valerie.

Yep, the full theme was shown the other day, but you could tell it was being run at a faster speed. Roberta Flack's voice sounded higher, and when Sandy kicks Willie in the rear when they're dancing, you could totally tell they were moving unnaturally. Plus when Willie sprays David and Marc with the hose, it runs longer with them chasing Willie down the street.
When John Hillerman joined the cast in the final year, they shot a new opening with them playing football in the park. But in seeing this theme again, it's got to be the CHEESIEST sitcom opening in history. Everyone smiling and laughing, esp. when Sandy catches the softball and does that head-bob with the HUGE grin, LOLOL. Or when David scores a goal, he's wearing a helmet. Yet when he skates up to wave, the helmet is gone.
friendsfan77
04-09-2006, 08:39 AM
The opening during the Valerie years looked less cheesy... like for instance the football in the air was real.

All the TV listings say the old lineup returns tomorrow, so it doesn't look good. Since today is a Sunday, I can't 100% confirm, but I will have a statement tomorrow if this is true. The ratings I think were bad. Tune in tomorrow at 12 noon, just in case, if I don't have a statement by then.

Leave it to ABC Family to do that. I find it funny that the whole time they had The Hogan Family, they instead promoted the "new time" for Full House. They could've at least promoted The Hogan Family so that people who don't use the internet regularly would know that they were airing it.
They did the same thing with The Wonder Years a while back. They played 2 episodes on Sundays at Midnight. They managed to air the entire 1st season, and then stopped. That covered 3 weeks of airing (6 episodes, of course), never to be seen again.
It's funny, because the channel guide had The Hogan Family for the next two weeks (going in order, with the last 2 episodes from season 3 on Monday, and going into season 4 from there), and now, it changed to Full House at 12 and 12:30 PM, so chances are, the change is legit.
Hopefully, you do get an update from ABC Family, Pavan, but chances are, they'll use the ol' ratings excuse.
I guess it was fun while it lasted...

Maybe someday it will end up on American Life, where they don't care so much about ratings and (I think) airs stuff unedited.

A weekend marathon (usually on Saturdays from 12 PM to 10 PM) would probably help a bit. Some advertisements would help a lot.
The casual viewer is not psychic; they won't magically figure out that the show is on, unless ABC Family notifies their viewers ahead of time. For internet users, they wouldn't know by going to abcfamily.com, because there was no mention of it. They would know only by going to a site like this one (hell, that was how I found out ;)).
If they think it's best to air it twice, how about taking out Gilmore Girls at 10:30 (keeping it at 5 PM, though), moving Step By Step to 10:30, and airing The Hogan Family at 11 and 11:30 AM? Perhaps a weekend only airing if that isn't successful? Maybe once a day (10:30 AM seems good, like Pavan suggested)? There's many possibilities, before removing it for good.
You can't just replace a high-rated show with another show, not promote it, and expect it to do good. Let's say the casual viewers tune in to see Full House at 12 PM, but instead, they find out that The Hogan Family is on? Although both shows have their similarities, to those casual viewers, it's just not the same, and thus, they won't tune in. That's lost viewership. However, if ABC Family mentioned, on their network, that The Hogan Family was to be added to their schedule? If they get a lot of viewers, good, their promotion worked. If the show still gets bad ratings, then ABC Family cannot be blamed this time. They did all they could, and still, not many people watched. It can be considered unsuccessful, and they can do what they want from there.
Of course, somewhere inbetween, there's the channel surfers, who'll flip through channels, notice the show, and say "I remember this", and continue watching it from there. We've all done it before; some of us still do.
ABC Family should really consider these things. Perhaps CMT and Hallmark should do the same, with Evening Shade and Family Ties respectively...

Well that sucks it was taken off. At least ABC Family said it will be brought back.
I totally agree with nocomments. Promotion is key. I noticed ABC Family happily promoted Full House's move to another timeslot but where the hell was promotion advertising The Hogan Family? If it was there I must have missed it.
And Pav is right 10:30am is probably the best slot for it.

Its so frustrating that most of us have to wait 10-15 years or even longer to see a lot of the classic sitcoms we grew up with. And even if a network does decide to give one a chance, we are totally at their mercy. The show could get pulled any time (as we just saw with THF). And the chopping up of these shows is often a nightmare. I can't believe that shows as popular as Mr. Belvedere and The Hogan Family will probably never make it to DVD. That's depressing because think of shows like Its Your Move and Double Trouble. Those shows are even more obscure and have almost zero shot of ever getting shown on TV again or released to DVD. Its frustrating because the people who own the rights to these shows have great quality copies of them out there somewhere. But they just sit in storage and their is no way for the people who really want the stuff (like us) to get it. Its such a waste, if you ask me. If they thought an Its Your Move DVD release, for example, would only sell 500, why can't they make 500 copies?? No extras, no fancy artwork, etc. Just a cheapy DVD package -- sort of like those $1 DVDs you see at Walmart, but of course they could sell these ones at $24.99 or whatever. Damn its frustrating. Hell, I'm scared they won't even continue to release Diff'rent Stokes on DVD, which of course was a VERY popular sitcom. I'm afraid they will stop at Season 2 and everyone knows the best episodes were seasons 4-6.

Is there a way you can tell them that viewers weren't happy with the lack of promotion they gave it, and that alot of people didn't know they were airing the show because of that? Maybe if they realize this they'll get it right next time around.

I actually remember quite a few ads promoting Step by Step when it joined the line-up around 2001. I remember the first time I saw a commercial my jaw dropped because the show hadn't aired in syndication where I lived in years. They no longer show previews for it, but it's very important to LET the viewers know that a new show is joining the line-up.
It was impossible for anybody to even know that Hogan Family was joining the network.. I mean the show was never even listed on their website for crying out loud!

I was just reading some of the messages about The Hogan Family being taken off ABC Family. When did they take it off ABC Family? Why did they take it off ABC Family? The Hogan Family just started on April 3rd and they already took it off? That's a bunch of bull. My guess is maybe not enough people could watch it at 12:00pm and 12:30pm. Instead of them taking it off their schedule, they should of moved it to like 3:00pm and 3:30pm or 4:00pm and 4:30pm when more people are home to watch it. It sounds like ABC Family did not give the show a chance. I hope ABC Family will put The Hogan Family back on their schedule soon and also put it on at either 3:00pm and 3:30pm or 4:00pm and 4:30pm when more people are home to watch it. Everyone should just write to Warner Brothers and tell them that we want seasons sets of Valerie / Valerie's Family / The Hogan Family to get released on DVD. Who knows how long The Hogan Family will last on ABC Family if it comes back at all. It would be nice if Warner Brothers would just release it on DVD then we don't have to worry about trying to watch it on TV.

Hey pavanbadal!
I agree with you for most of the stuff your saying about The Hogan Family. I don't agree with a 10:30am timeslot though. For one thing kids are in school at that time and adults are working most of the day. I think a better timeslot would be 4:00pm and 4:30pm, 5:00pm and 5:30pm, or 6:00pm and 6:30pm because most more people are home at those times to watch it and I think the ratings would get better. I think late afternoon or early evening would be perfect to air it. I hope ABC Family will put it on during one of those timeslots when they put it back on their schedule.

I don't think the show would get the ratings as Full House and Grounded for Life. It certainly didn't get Full House's ratings in the noon hour.
TVJunkie101
04-13-2006, 10:21 AM
From the sound of things it seems the ratings were anemic! Noon was NOT a good time for Hogan Family at all.
Promotion helps, too, I really believe that. It may of never gotten the ratings Full House did, but If they at least promoted it... Step by Step and Family Matters are more established shows and more recent, so I would assume they probably don't need much promoting.

I do not think that they have given this show a chance. You cannot expect a show to get off the ground in only a week! The ratings would be higher in the summer when there is no school. Noon was not the best time slot either because that is when the local news comes on. It would help if they would promote the show every once in a while too. I did not even know that the show was on until I saw it in the Digital Video Recorder list. I told the DVR to record all episodes with the name of "Valerie" or "The Hogan Family" and sure enough it recorded "The Hogan Family". If it would not have been for that then I would have never known that it was on.

I don't know when The Hogan Family will be coming back on ABC Family. I heard that its suppose to come back though. I hope it will come on at either 4:00pm and 4:30pm, 5:00pm and 5:30pm, or 6:00pm and 6:30pm. That way more people are home during those times to watch it.
Any idea when its coming back?

Now I thought The Hogan Family was suppose to be coming back on ABC Family this summer after it was taken off the second week of April? I couldn't believe it only lasted one week. How come there hasn't been any more news about The Hogan Family returning this summer? I hope ABC Family is still planning on putting The Hogan Family back on their schedule and at a decent time. If anyone knows any news if or when The Hogan Family will be returning, please let me know.

The i network should get the rights back to "The Hogan Family" from ABCfamily (considering they are getting sister sitcom "Perfect Strangers", also a Miller-Boyett/Lorimar/Warner Bros. sitcom)...in fact, I almost wonder if that's why ABCFamily has never returned the show to air. "The Hogan Family" ran previously on PAX from 1998-2000, and again on TVLand for a weekend last year celebrating Warner Bros. TV anniversary.
tvlover85
07-06-2006, 01:27 AM
Miller-Boyett were executive producers of both shows (and also produced "Full House," "Family Matters," and "Step By Step")...they were both produced in association with Lorimar Television and distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. "The Hogan Family" was one of two Miller-Boyett shows of the late 1980's/early 1990's not to air on ABC (it aired on NBC for most of its run and on CBS in its final season). "The Family Man" was the other (which aired on CBS in 1990-1991 before "The Hogan Family" on Saturday nights). Miller-Boyett also produced "Happy Days," "Laverne & Shirley," "Mork & Mindy," and "Bosom Buddies" with Edward R. Milkis for Paramount Television.
Since Warner Bros. has "The Hogan Family" in their library and Pax aired them when they started, I think the i network is where it should air (and the i network would probably treat the show with more respect than ABCFamily).

Yes they should...I have a feeling ABC Family is not going to really bring back The Hogan Family...I also wonder if they are going to get Head of the Class and It's a Living (both currently in the WB library) in this deal; plus some short-lived sitcoms for weekends like My Sister Sam, Just the Ten of Us, She's the Sheriff, It's a Living, shorter-lived Miller-Boyett shows ("Going Places," "The Family Man," "Getting By," "Kirk," "Meego," "On Our Own," "Two of a Kind"), other short-lived Diane English sitcoms (the producer of "My Sister Sam" and "Murphy Brown"). Other sitcoms that should come here when their contracts with their current networks end:
From ABCFamily:
Full House, Family Matters, Step By Step, Gilmore Girls (more likely to go to Noggin or teen-oriented network though), and Smallville (see Gilmore Girls)
From Nick at Nite:
Full House, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Murphy Brown
From FX:
Dharma & Greg (but will probably hit Nick @ Nite first)
From TBS:
The Drew Carey Show (see Dharma & Greg)

TV is going to be so great again! I can't wait to see what i network will roll out with in September/October. With Family Matters moving to 7-8 AM and The Hogan Family returning from 8-9 AM, I wonder what is in the works for ABCFamily? Perhaps another classic 80's/90's sitcom or two, or maybe they are picking up 8 Simple Rules from The WB.

Yes. They're skipping it for some reason. That's episode #24. They're showing episode #23 (Wooly Bully) and jumping over to #25 (A Night To Remember).

Man, don't tell me they are going to pull the same crap that Nick @ Nite did with Diff'rent Strokes! That is, skip over any and every episode that might be considered remotely "controversial." This is so ridiculous. I hate when they do this stuff.
friendsfan77
10-05-2006, 04:20 PM
If they're skipping it for the reason I think they're skipping it, I find it funny that the same network that's supposedly called "family" aired the R-rated movie Cruel Intentions a while back, but now they're skipping THF episode "Bad Timing." To me that makes no sense. Especially considering how tame the latter is compared to CI. And this was the Valerie Harper episode I was looking forward to the most. Now I really wish I knew about this episode airing on TVLand a couple years back.

I think they are skipping it not for content, but because that episode in syndication is the only episode with the Valerie credits.

Wow. I'm usually one who says that an opening and/or closing theme is one of several things that make a show significant, but in this case and if that's the case, is it really necessary? If it was that big a deal, I'm surprised that they wouldnt just tack on the alternate HF opening like the original syndicators did with the other Valerie and Valerie's Family episodes. They didnt seem to have a problem shortening the opening theme for most of the season 2 episodes. When they aired on Pax, they showed the full version for most of that season. Makes me wish that the Pax channel I had in Indianapolis came in clearer. I mean, I wanted to see the Valerie title as much as anyone else wanted to, but I wouldnt want the entire episode to be skipped. This is a case where I'd say the show is way more important than the theme. Especially considering that "Bad Timing" was a significant episode in prime-time history. It's really nice seeing THF again, but this particular move I'm not particuarly appreciative of.

it just seems strange - i've even noticed a couple of episodes where they have cut the end scene out and added the EP credits back in just on a black screen, so why couldn't they just use the standard credits from the other episodes?

Those advance schedules don't mean a thing, unfortunately. They can change those things at the last minute. They do it _all the time_. So, what's the bad news? I assume they are pulling the show -- AGAIN. Man, that really ticks me off. There is nothing more frustrating than when a show that is unavailable on DVD and hasn't been seen on TV for years gets replaced by a show that is ALREADY on DVD. What ar they going to go -- replace the Hogan's with yet more blocks of Boy Meets World and Full House?!

UPN aka My9 had Charles In Charge for a year, before taking it off. I guess they only had a 1 year deal with Local stations. I was upset that they took that off too! As far as 8 months go, that's how long N@N had it a few years ago. From August 2003- April 2004, I believe.
