I'm reading East of Eden by John Steinbeck and have been since August and am only 100 pages through it. But I keep it at home and don't read a lot during the school year because I am so burnt out on homework. Hopefully this summer I'll be able to read for pleasure more.

I am reading the book, "Miracle in the Andes."
Written by one of 16 survivors and by one of the two who walked down the mountain (the Andes in South America) to find help for themselves and the other survivors still stranded on the mountain at the 11,500- foot level.

It tells of the same basic story as the book "Alive" which was written not long after the disaster.

I've read so much about this plane crash/disaster, seen the movie and watched interviews that I almost seem to know Nando without ever meeting him.

Islam And Terrorism by Dr. Mark Gabriel. This is a fascinating read. Gabriel is a former Muslim who openly questioned aspects of the faith he was born into and as a result, was nearly killed by his govt and even members of his own family.

He eventually was shown the Bible and renounced his muslim faith, converting to Christianity, where he chose the Christian name Mark Gabriel. This is ironic considering he was once a professor of muslim studies.

This book is a real eye-opener, as Gabriel explains the quran in an easy-to-read text and given his unique perspective on muslim matters, it's compelling reading.

It also inspires some fear in me as the muslim faith is not to be taken lightly and many of them do believe in the most fanatical aspects of the religion. It's heartening to see that Gabriel saw the errors in the morality of the muslim religion and is living life as a good Christian.

Gush all you like, Kristen. :)

I'm thinking of starting a thread for this book. I'd like to spread the word, so to speak, about Owen Meany.

Some of my favourite parts of the book are when Owen is Jesus in the Christmas pageant (and he gets up and screams at his parents in the middle of the play) and then when he's the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come in A Christmas Carol and he sees his own name and date of death on the gravestone.

I have read this book, although it was quite some time ago, and I haven't looked at it for a while. I should probably read it again soon.

I bought two new books, I Know This Much is True, by Wally Lamb, and The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I haven't started reading either book properly yet, but both look promising.

I Know This Much Is True is about a guy called Dominick Birdsey, who has an identical twin brother, Thomas, who is a paranoid schizophrenic. With my interest in schizophrenia, I had to read it.

The Historian seems to incorporate the plot of Dracula by Bram Stoker.

I've already finished that book! (I read really fast)

Now I am onto Ryan White: My Own Story (http://cgi.ebay.com/Ryan-White-My-Own-Story-How-He-Got-AIDS-1991-HB_W0QQitemZ330015105732QQihZ014QQcategoryZ378QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem), by Ryan White and Ann Marie Cunningham. I have an original first-edition copy of this book from 1991, like the one in the picture in the link. I've read that book maybe 10 times, and it makes me cry every time I read the ending, because it's really sad. Ryan White truly was an inspirational guy.
Already finished that book (I cried at the end, like always).

I'm going to start on A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060736267/sr=8-1/qid=1155089316/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-0330426-2072072?ie=UTF8), by Betty Smith. Karly (Kay Scarpetta) actually recommended this book about two years ago and I kept trying to get around to reading it, but never did. Now I'm going to start over again and THIS TIME, I will finish it. I actually liked what little I read of it. :)

After finishing The Expected One, I’m now digging into a fascinating debut novel by Kentucky native Kim Edwards, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. The novel explores the life of Norah Henry, who gave birth to boy/girl twins, one healthy, one with Down’s Syndrome, during a raging snowstorm in Kentucky in 1964. Unbeknownst to Norah, her surgeon husband dispatches their handicapped daughter to an orphanage and tells her that their daughter was stillborn. Needless to say, secrets and lies can never remain dormant forever, and further tragedies befall the family… okay, I won’t reveal anymore, but you can check out the book, already a major bestseller here in the United States and set to become a motion picture, over at Amazon:

I started that book on the 9th and finished it last night (the 13th). It was pretty slow-going at first, but started to pick up about 50-75 pages into the book. It's a great book. :D

I started on A Yellow Raft in Blue Water (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312421850/sr=8-1/qid=1155597876/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-0330426-2072072?ie=UTF8), by Michael Dorris, this morning. It's a pretty decent book so far...It's kind of depressing, because the people in it are poor Native Americans, and it reminds me of when I used to live five minutes north of a Native American reservation. Just... I don't know. But I'm going to finish it, regardless. It's actually not so bad. :)

The first one is 102 Minutes (http://www.amazon.com/102-Minutes-Untold-Survive-Towers/dp/0805076824/sr=1-3/qid=1162424525/ref=pd_bbs_3/102-1961019-9783353?ie=UTF8&s=books), by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn. It's interesting as hell.

It's a book on how the people working in 1 WTC and 2 WTC reacted when the towers got hit on 9/11. I haven't gotten too far into it yet, but wow. Some of the stories in there are creepy, like how there were a bunch of people having breakfast at Windows on the World at the top of 1 WTC, and how a few of them decided to go down to the lobby. They were the last people to be in the elevator, and they departed Windows on the World at 8:44AM (two and a half minutes before 1 WTC was struck). Man... Creepy.

The second book I am reading is The Way the Crow Flies (http://www.amazon.com/Way-Crow-Flies-Novel-P-S/dp/0060586370/sr=1-1/qid=1162425839/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-1961019-9783353?ie=UTF8&s=books), by Ann-Marie MacDonald. Again, haven't gotten very far into it yet, but it's a pretty good read. :)

Trying to read the book Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace. It's a monster of a book at 1079 pages. I don't know that I'll finish it; the first chapter was pretty confusing.

Maybe I'll go back to The Tenth Circle, by Jodi Picoult. I never did start that books, even though I posted here that I was reading that book. Whoops.

Did you ever see the movie? If so, what did you think?

I have not seen the movie.

Grania by Morgan Llywelyn
It's the novel that the musical The Pirate Queen is based on. Not that anyone cares.

I sometimes find myself re-reading certain chapters to get a full understanding. The book is really weird but Huxley is dead on in some of his predictions. :)

That he is. It's quite disturbing.

I just finished Crossfire: The Plot to Kill Kennedy by Jim Manns (I think...could be wrong on the author). It was really, really good! I literally couldn't put it down yesterday...read about 250 pages!

Now I just need to figure out what to start/finish next (Great Expectations, Winter's Tale, or Atlas Shrugged I'm guessing)

I've started reading Journeys Out of the Body by Robert Monroe and have ordered another astral projection book, Astral Dynamics, by Robert Bruce.

I also plan to start reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower (by Stephen Chbosky) soon.

I liked that book.

It was a good book, my favorite story of the nine was Teddy.

Right now I am reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck :)

Television Without Pity by Tara Ariano and Sarah D. Bunting, the people behind the popular Television Without Pity website. In my opinion, it's not very good.

Another book I've read that I would recommend instead is called JPod by Canadian author Douglas Coupland. It reminds me of "The Office", except that it's actually funny.
