View Full Version : How did your parents meet?

My mother was 16. She had a sister who was 10 years older than her.

Her sister's husband had a friend who just happened to stop by for a visit too. That friend was my father. He was 28.

They were married a year later, when my mother was 17 and my father was 29.

They were married for 50 years, had four children and died two months apart.

It was fate.

In a bar. My dad was the bartender at a bowling alley and my mom was too drunk to drive home, so he did. They're still happily married, so I guess you can find decent people in a bar. lol

In a grocery store... my dad was working there and he was 23 and my mom 17 and still in high school. They married 8 months later and I was born 13 months later. They will be married 19 years in June. :D

They met on a blind date their friend set up for them. My father proposed on the 2nd date and were married I think a year later in 1986. However, they divorced in 1997. I'm not too fond of blind dates:lol:

in high school. my mom was working on an art project in the hall and she was right next to where the gym was, and a basketball rolled out. so, of course my dad came out and got it. i don't know when they saw eachother after that, but my mom says to this day she wishes she chose the art project that was smaller and didn't require doing on such a big space, because then she never would have met my dad. but she says it is her fault for being stupid for marrying him.

My parents are high school sweethearts :D They knew each other through classes in junior high, but didn't start dating until they ran in to each other at a party in high school. They got married in 1982 when my Mom was 18 and Dad was 19 (she was pregnant with me at that time).

My parents met when they were sophomores in high school and started dating when they were juniors. They were the typical "high school" couple, football player and a cheerleader. After high school they took a break for about 2 years then go back together and married in 1981.

Jail.

Just kidding.

They met through mutual friends, a double date.

Jail came later that night.

My dad was a cop and was 25, and my mom was 19 and working at a gas station. My mom went out to her car and some drugged out guy was in the backseat of her car, and threatened to kill her with a knife. Somehow she was able to talk him out of doing anything crazy. She ended up calling the cops, and my dad was the one that got the call. Funny thing was that he was dating one of my mom's coworkers. The woman my mom worked with said, "Mark's too nice and I don't deserve him. Can you break it off for me?" So my mom basically did it for her. LOL she said she wanted him for herself anyway. The day he asked her out, 6 other guys had asked her out! She said nothing like that ever happened to her before, and most of the guys that asked her out she knew were losers. My dad asked her out. She was like, "Well um I don't know." He said, "Well I'm just asking you out, I didn't ask you to marry me." They've been married now for 24 years. A tale of the farmer's daughter marrying a city boy.

This story is amazing. To think that your parents met due to a criminal act against your mother. Talk about the hand of fate.

All these stories are great. These are the stories of why we're alive, I guess.

My mom was friends with my dad's cousin and they hooked up. Good Lord, biggest mistake ever. I mean, I wouldn't be alive had it not happened...but they could not be two more different people. Also, considering my dad is probably slightly insane.

They grew up in the same town so they knew each other as children. I never understand why my mom picked my dad. Pretty much everyone in his family had drinking problems, himself included. I don't even think he ever really loved my mother by the way he treated her. My mom was quite popular in school and even had boys fighting over her. Sometimes I wished that she picked one of those other guys instead of my dad.

No, then you wouldn't be here, and we can't have that. :)

Spencer wouldn't be here either.

I know what you mean though. You're talking in the abstract. If you're mother had picked someone who made her happier...things would be different and better.

Fun topic!

My mom (from Toronto) was celebrating her divorce from her first husband in the Bahamas.

My dad (from Illinois) had just inherited money from an uncle so was vacationing in the Bahamas.

There was a hurricane, and they got locked in the hotel bar together.

They wrote and called each other....and eventually my dad proposed to my mom at the airport in front of the St. Louis Blues hockey team.

Now that's an impressive story! :) Almost sounds like the plot to a movie. (I mean that in a good way).

What's famous abot my parents' wedding was it led to another. My mom's best friend caught the bouquet and my dad's best friend caught the garder. They married each other and their daughter has been my best friend for 20 years.

My parents met on a blind date while they were both in college. My mom went to school with Marti who was dating Mickey who knew and went to school with my dad. Marti and Mickey knew my parents would go good together so they set them up on a blind date.

The first date didn't go so well. As my mom was driving to the A&M campus, some jerk ran across the road in front of her and she had to slam on the brakes to keep from hitting the idiot. My dad, who was running a bit late, was almost hit by a crazy woman driver who doesn't yield for pedestrians!

Yup you guessed it, my dad ran out in front of my mom. THAT was a huge surprise as each is telling their story to their respective friends only to find outh the idiot and the crazy driver was their blind date.

The date ended on a bang.....my dad fell asleep! Somehow they worked through it all and ended up getting married and had 4 kids. Almost 40 years later, they now have 2 grandkids to add to that total.

Hmm, I never posted in this thread? Damn.

My parents knew each other growing up. My mom babysat for a few of my dad's nephews/nieces in the 1960s, long before my mom knew my dad, although they knew of each other back then. My mom started her freshman year of high school in 1971, the same year my dad started his senior year of high school (he graduated in 1972). They FINALLY properly met up through mutual friends of theirs, AND started dating around the time my mom started her senior year of HS in 1974. They got married in 1977. My parents are divorced now, though... Separated in 1994, divorce was finalized in early 1995.

My dad met my stepmom sometime before my parents' divorce was finalized. He was at a bar here in town one night after work, and there was a woman there who he started talking to, and they hit it off really quickly. One thing led to another, and they started dating pretty much immediately. They got engaged in the summer of 1995, had all of us move in together in September of that year and they got married in March of 1996. In fact, their 11-year anniversary is tomorrow (2 March 1996). :)

Beautiful story, although I know the ending is not a beautiful one, it was painful and sad for you. Think of all the good times and how much they loved each other.

My parents met when my father was 22 and my mother was 20. He saw her walking past his family home and chatted with her. They dated for a year before they got married.

They adopted my sister, then my brother and then me.

My mother died when I was six years old in 1971, two weeks after my sixth birthday. My father passed in 2004. My brother passed in 2002.

My mom was 29 and single. She was mulling over the possibility of studying in Hawaii when she went with a friend to a Lutheran singles party. That party would forever change her life. A young man spotted her across the room...and the rest is history. Yes, the young man is my dad. That was in 1972, they married in 1974, had three kids, and welcomed their first grandchild last summer.

cute thread!

So my dad's uncle passed away and left him some money, so he decided to go to the Bahama's. He's from Illinois.

My mom had just got a divorce from her first husband, so to "celebrate," she went to the Bahama's. She's from Toronto.

Then, a hurricane broke out, and they happened to be staying in the same hotel. They were stuck in the "safety center" for hours, and the rests is history.

Dad proposed after about a year of long-distance dating....at the St. Louis airport in front of the St. Louis Blues hockey team as they were preparing to fly to Canada for a game :)

I think so, in a quirky Independent film kind of way, lol. In the movie, Shopgirl, a couple meets that way (Claire Danes and Jason Schwartzman). It also stars Steve Martin. It's in my top five of favorite movies from last year.

My mom's first marriage was ****ty, and she had moved into my dad's brothers neighborhood. Well, my dad's brother taught some of her kids at church etc. and they were great friends. Well he suggested to her that she meet his brother who was coming into town. Well she heard him say a talk in church and according to her "she knew that he was the man for her". But he lived in California at the time and she lived in Utah. Well next time he was in the area, they went on a date. With my uncle chaufering, and my grandman chaperoning. Well it was "love love love" I guess you could put it. And 2 years later they were married. And have been happily miserable ever since lol.

I told this same story in this thread a year ago, but I know more of the key details now. Oddly, my mom and I talked about this last week so I'm going to retell the story while it is fresh in my mind.

My mom and dad went to high school together, in New Jersey. My mom was a junior and my dad was a sophomore when they met. My mom was working on a self-portrait art project, and the teacher said that the students who chose that project could choose any location to work on it. Plus, the paper it's on is huge. My mom decided to work on it outside of the gym, because her best friend was in that class and she felt more comfortable there. That day, the gym class was playing basketball, and a basketball rolled out of the gym and smudged my mom's drawing, which was oil pastel. My dad was the one that ran out of the gym and got the basketball, but he didn't notice my mom. That's when she first saw him, but she saw him around school other times. She thought he was different than the other guys she knew, who were all low-class and trashy. My dad had class, and my grandfather made sure his children wore only the best clothes and used the best hair gel. My dad and his friends had their own band, and my mom went with her friend to one of his practices, and thats where they met. My mom went off to college 2 years later, and my aunt and grandmother on my mom's side hoped she would find a better guy in college..but she didn't. She wishes she either a)chose the art project that had to be worked on in the art room, because if it wasn't for that, she may not have seen my dad at all or b)met a better guy in college. but still, she made a stupid choice and the result? i'm here. :D

I know this is an old thread, but i'm bored:) .

It was 1975 when my parents met. My mother lived in New York at the time and my dad was visiting there. My mom was eighteen and was studying(at the time) to be an opera singer(she was really good!) and was planning on getting married to rookie boxer while my dad was twenty-five and was married to some lady that his parents set him up with.

They met at some nightclub downtown. My father was standing there with his friends watching my mother dance. He was amazed about the way she moved so he had his friend call her friend over to introduced him. My mother was impressed by his looks and....his money:rolleyes:. They fell in love and a year later my late brother was born, another year later my father divorced his wife and my mother broke it off with her future husband. They got married in 1980 and a year later, me and my late twin sister was born.

']in high school. my mom was working on an art project in the hall and she was right next to where the gym was, and a basketball rolled out. so, of course my dad came out and got it. i don't know when they saw eachother after that, but my mom says to this day she wishes she chose the art project that was smaller and didn't require doing on such a big space, because then she never would have met my dad. but she says it is her fault for being stupid for marrying him.

^ Seeing as that post is me, that is how my parents met.

I know, I answered this before, but, oh well..LOL

My aprents met at a party. My mom did not like my dad at first, because he was younger than she was, but, he was persisted, and they ended up getting married a year later. Today, actually this month, will mark their 41st wedding anniversary.:)

They met during WW II. He was a soldier. They met in South Carolina (I
think). Otherwise, they never would have met; she was from Tennessee, and
he was born in New York.

My parents met in high school but they didn't start dating until two years after my mom finished high school.

Well, let's see...my mom was 16 and my dad was 21 - he had just gotten out of the Navy (this was right after WW2)...they met at a roller rink called White City and started dating. Then my dad left and went back to NY for six months, came back and married my mom 4 months after she graduated high school.

There were 3 of us kids and they were married 50 years until my dad passed away in January of 1999. My mom is still around.

My dad was at a bar with a female friend. While they were there, she said she wanted to introduce someone to my dad, which he was cool with. That someone was my mom. This was June 1984. They got engaged in August 1985 and married in September 1986.

Thanks! I noticed from the picture you posted that on your parents wedding day your Dad had a pretty full head of hair!! Seriously though I like how your parents are gazing into each others eyes in the picture. Very romantic!

My parents met at a disco in the seventies.
My dad came over to the table where my mom was sitting with her two friends.... and very flirtaciously asked her friend to dance!

Her friend said no, luckily enough for me.:D and he later asked my mom to dance... and the rest is history.;)
