Freaks and Geeks and Firefly are two I've been planning on checking out for a long time, and I will eventually check them out for a relatively cheap price, but I have a feeling I will end up hating myself for investing time into two shows which just abruptly ended after less than 20 episodes (even tho Joss is turning Firefly into a film franchise)
what are other shows you guys would recommend for me that I might not be familiar with?

My first recommendation would be Lost. That is of course if you haven't already seen it (or own it). I blind bought it, and just finished it. It was great!!! Also you might enjoy Veronica Mars if you haven't watched it yet. Also you can never go wrong with Scrubs.
I hope I have been some kind of help to you. If not then sorry for wasting your time.

There's always Hunter. *cough cough* ;)
I haven't seen Lost, either. I've been thinking of giving it a blind buy.
But anyway, I think you should get Freaks And Geeks next, John. It's time. You've waited long enough.
And Tim should get Undeclared when he gets the chance, though he's probably still mad at me for taking almost two years to get into Arrested Development. ;)

the thing that keeps holding me back from F&G is the whole knowing it didn't even last an entire season and that there isn't a snowball chance in hell there's going to be a Family Guy type situation with it, same thing has kept me from getting into the world of Firefly, but at least with that a movie (Serenity) is coming very soon.

I know, but F&G has a huge rewatchability factor. Not only that, but there are tons of commentaries and deleted scenes to keep you company.
I guarantee you'll be rewatching the show within a year.

ok guys, I'll pick F&G up on Tuesday when I pick up DH. But it's going to come at a price: if I don't like the show, Brad's going to have to buy "Britney And Kevin: Chaotic" and watch it, LOL!!!! (or you can buy a season of Nick And Jessica: Newlyweds instead)

Yikes! Those are pretty high stakes!

Well, I'm late, you've already made your decision. So I guess I can forget about ranting that you've heard nothing but positives concerning Freaks and Geeks, why the :censored: would you let the fact that it was 18 episodes stop you from getting it. I can spare you the rant that those episodes are 18 of the truly greatest episodes of a series ever produced for television, too good in fact for television. I won't rant about the brevity of the series not being indicative of the quality, which was extremely high. You've already made your decision. A smart one.

I already got DH (I couldn't wait), but I know FYE is having a 20% off TV-DVD sale going on, so I'm going to use that time to get both F&G and Firefly tomorrow.
I won't watch either until I finish up DH and Curb Your Enthusiasm (I got seasons 1-4 from that sale a few days ago) but when I do, I will let you know.
It's kinda funny that I've been on Stacy to check out Popular for a year, and he's been telling me to check out F&G, and then we both decide to check the shows out at the same week (since BB has the Popular sets for almost 50% off). I also picked up Footballers Wives season 1 on that sale but I am going to put that on the backburner of shows to watch because I just had a curiousity about it, and I probably will stop after series 2 since that's when the two guys I like leave.

well, I just checked out the first F&G episode, I had finished a disc of DH and decided to stick it in since I had wanted to see it for a long time.
Some observations:
-Linda Cardellini seems like a really good leading actress, a lot more character development than she had in the other roles I've seen her in.
-it's funny seeing James Franco playing a James Dean rebellious type character considering how conservative and black-tie he is in the Spiderman movies.
-Seth Rogan is very much playing a younger version of the same character he played in 40 Year Old Virgin (which was also by the same writer), hard to believe he was only 17 at the time
-Millie also played on Buffy's last season as one of the potential slayers. I immediately IMDB'd her the second she came onscreen because she has the type of long face that is instantly recognizable.
-Alan looked exactly like this burnout from my high school who got expelled for smoking weed with his buddies in the cafeteria at lunch, when I saw him, immediately the memory of "we're just smoking a joint, man" (what he said when the principal came up to them) sprung up and I started laughing.
-Kim is a superbitch, I'm hoping to see her and Lindsay catfight it out
-it was cool to see Ron Lester ("Sugar Daddy" from Popular) on here too, since those two shows premiered the same season and very similar to each other, he was the big guy (well, he's not big anymore since he had gastric) who knocked Haverchuck in the head and Schweiber in the crotch during dodgeball, except on Popular he was a "good guy", lol.
-I immediately recognized Jason Segal as Alyson Hannigan's fiance in that new sitcom they're in.
-I've never seen the guy who was Biff in Back To The Future in another role until now.
-I am surprised Eli is the guy Claire dated who turned out to be bisexual on "Six Feet Under", he looks so totally different on this. He looks like Cody Kasch on this.
-I like Sam the least of the "Geeks", yet he's the central character
-"Come Sail Away" is the only Styx song I like (Mr. Roboto is alright in a "this is so terrible it's kinda good" way but that's not the same, lol)
-way too much of the geeks and not enough of the freaks
So far I think Schweiber is my favorite character. I can see the Haverchuck popularity but maybe I will really join the cult of the character after seeing subsequent episodes.

nobody has even bothered to reply to my post, I was expecting to hear at least imput from Vash and AKA.
I'm even more surprised that nobody bothered to go "that cute guy from 40 Year Old Virgin is in this" to me when trying to sell me on getting F&G considering Seth is definately my type, lol.
Sorry, John. I didn't see the post until just now.
I'm glad you seem to like it. Keep watching; it gets even better.
Seth Rogen's Ken is actually my favorite character in the series. He's a funny guy (and he's now a writer for Da Ali G Show). He's also in Undeclared, and wrote a few episodes of that show.

Only reason I didn't reply was because the post seemed to focus more on the casting than the show itself. I figured I'd wait until you've seen a few more episodes.

I was also curious about Undeclared as well. I remember all the buzz surrounding the release last month. Would that be recommended as well? I'm gonna watch episode 2 tomorrow night, I just finished CYE-S1 (I was actually pretty oblivious to the show until a friend made me watch a few season 3 episodes a few months ago, now I think it's gold) and will also start on S2 tomorrow night. Kinda easier to mix things up between CYE and F&G because while Curb is a great show, it's not something you can watch 3-4 episodes in one sitting like I was able to with DH.
That depends on your opinion of Freaks And Geeks. I think if you like Freaks, you'll like Undeclared. It's the same style, only more comedy and less drama.
Besides Seth Rogen, there are cameo appearances by F&G alumni throughout the series (Jason Segel, Martin Starr, Samm Levine, Busy Philipps and Sarah Hagan).

oh ok. I was kinda hoping to see maybe a "yea, it is weird to see James Franco playing such a slacker considering the neo-yuppie he is in the Spiderman movies" or "wow, I didn't know Millie was one of the slayers-in-training", lol.
I actually did say a few things related to the show towards the bottom of the post, such as that I like Schweiber the best of the characters at least from the pilot.

I had absolutely no idea the shows were from the same creator until the DVD for Undeclared came out and heard all the buzz about it here. I remember when the show came on the air but back in those days I was working nights and the only shows I watched (save HBO shows that repeated 10 times during the week ala Sex and Six Feet) were Friends, Buffy and Ally McBeal and 9 out of 10 weeks I'd have to record them and watch them when I got home.

I heartily recommend Firefly; it may have been short-lived, but the writing and acting rivals BtVS at its best. Haven't seen Freaks and Geeks yet. <hanging head in shame.> :)
Lost is a decent option, too...
Don't let the fact that a series was short-lived keep you from watching a show - I picked up The Job and Sportsnight within the last few months and loved them both (parts of The Job made me laugh out loud in a way that few so-called sitcoms do).
If you haven't seen it and like police/crime dramas, The Wire is excellent, perhaps the best show on TV right now...well, right when HBO runs the 4th season :)

well, Sports Night did run two seasons, which is definately not long-running, but yet it isn't blink-and-miss either (even though I bet Peter Krause is hating Felicity Huffman right now, lol. If it wasn't for a little show she's on he could've gotten the cast back together now that Six Feet Under's over). If a show has over 30 episodes, it's got enough to not be considered short-lived.

I've heard good things about it, but a lot of today's cable shows are more intense than I'm willing to handle. I quit OZ cold turkey after the one guy had Beechers son (who was like 8) killed, that type of **** is more than I could take. Hell, even every single episode of Nip Tuck has scenes where I must turn away from the television until the scene is over.

The Wire can be intense, but it is nowhere near what Oz was like. It *is* cable though, so it might be too much (some violence, some nudity, lots of profanity) for you.

The Wire is definitely one of the best, most underrated shows on television. Nothing like OZ.
cpmaz, have you seen the HBO miniseries The Corner, starring Khandi Alexander? It's very much along the lines of The Wire and you'll see a lot of the same cast members in both. You should check that out if you haven't already.

Not yet...It's one I have thought about getting, but haven't done so yet. I did hear it is really good though.

well, i watched the second episode. I must say, the first episode, I had a "well, I see the appeal but I don't think I'd really like this", but the second episode (Beers And Weirs) definately made me a fan. I loved the pacing, as well as that EVERYONE got their fair screen time this season, not just Lindsay and the geeks. I found Haverchuck annoying at first, but then he won me over first with the Dallas thing and then getting drunk.
I originally was thinking the idea of the geeks switching the kegs was going to be stupid and that they would get caught, but it was executed perfectly. Mr. Rosso is great as well because of how tragically unhip he is yet he thinks he is so cool. While I definately dislike Kim, she seems a little less "Ice Queen" than she was in the pilot.
well, I didn't say one thing about the casting this time, so that excuse can't be used
