Quite a few Generals made thier way through the 4077th in the early years, each one of them bringing thier own unique spin as the "regularArmy" autority figure for Hawkeye and crew to goof on.

Who is your favorite? Is it...

General Hammond (G. Wood) A holdover from the original movie, Hammond appeared in the pilot episode as well as "To Market,To Market" and "Henry Please Come Home."

General Barker (Sorrell Booke) The diminutive but blustery Barker challenged the 4077th to a boxing match in "Requiem For a Lightweight" and butted heads with Hawkeye in "Chief Surgeon Who?" in back to back eps in season one. In case you get these guys mixed up, Mr. Booke was the one who later played Boss Hogg.

General Clayton (Herb Voland) With seven episodes under his belt (Yankee Doodle Doctor, For the Good Of The Outfit, 5 O'clock Charlie, Divided We Stand, Tuttle, Cease Fire, Dr. Pierce And Mr. Hyde) Clayton had the longest run as the show's visiting General, and at times was the most laid back of our choices.

General Mitchell (Robert F. Simon) Now here's a character I couldn't figure out. In each of the 3 episodes he appeared in (Trial Of Henry Blake, The Incubator, Officer's Only) it's as if he was meeting everyone for the first time. If anyone has any insight to this, please feel free to share it with me.

So, there you have it. Make your choice, and offer any commentary you like.

Dismissed!

I like General Clayton . I am not sure what episode it was but I remember a funny scene when they were filming him for something. I saw it a while ago I don't remember more than that about the episode.

The episode you are thinking of is "Yankee Doodle Doctor" from season one.

A film director comes to the 4077th to make a movie about the Doctors. Dissatisfied with what the film is depicting about army life in wartime, Hawkeye and Trapper hijack the film and do some "shooting" of thier own.

General Steele! That's with three E's, and not all together.

And didn't it ever occur to anyone at the 4077th that Colonel Potter bore a striking resemblence to the crazy old coot?

I was going to include General Steele and Gen. "Iron Guts" Kelly in the poll, but I thought we would stick with the ones we saw more than once.

Don't open that can of worms!!!

There were some people who couldn't distinguish between the two and felt that the Gen. Steele episode should be changed and written off as a dream sequence.

Apparently the notion that an actor can play more than one role on a series is foreign to some...

I liked General Barker ("The man's NAKED!") He was so funny!

I believe all the Generals in the list had affairs with Hot Lips, correct?

Barker, Hammond and Clayton had some sort of thing going with Margaret. Gen. Mitchell may have joined the list in "Officer's Only," but we're not really sure.

Okay, he probably scored.

Course, one can't forget when MacArthur came to visit! That was one of Klinger's best outfits!

I voted for General Barker because I'm a fan of Sorrell Booke. I loved his work as Boss Hogg on Dukes.

I was watching "The General Flipped At Dawn" again last night and I didn't think of Colonel Potter...despite the fact Harry Morgan was playing Steele. He really locked into the insanity of the character and it's a fun episode.

Very true. It was a nice comedic turn for Harry Morgan.

My favorite was General Clayton. He was so laid-back and he got along great with Hawkeye and Trapper.

The producers admitted that the character of Potter was germinating in their minds ever since the General Steele ep aired.

Yep, they didn't have to audition anyone for Potter. I'll bet Harry Morgan was glad he took the guest role of General Steele, that's for damn sure!!
