Mad Dog from Good Times as the Son, of course not being a member of a Gang, and Esther Rolle has the Mother, it would have been so so much better. It was nothing wrong with the storyline of the show, a son who took over a barber shop and living with his mother in D.C, it was just that the two lead characters were not entertaining. The difference is Theresa Meritt played a mother like she was on TV, Esther Rolle played a mother like she was not in front of a camera.

she just played a TV Mom like she was really home. Not on a stage in front of a camera

So you mean she seemed more natural and the mother on That's My Mama was more of a sitcom-y mother?

I don't know why you guys kill Clifton Davis as the lead.

I find him entertaining and quite comfortable in his character.

That's good for me, I suppose, since he is the main guy.

And did you know (from his IMDB page) he wrote "Never Can Say Goodbye", recorded and made famous by The Jackson 5?

I've only made it through the first disc of season 1 so far, but based on those episodes it's just not so easy to warm up to his character. Maybe I've got his "Amen" character in the back of mind and would rather see him that way. On TMM, at least so far, Clifton isn't that appealing.

But yeah, I knew he wrote Never Can Say Goodbye.

She was the only natural TV MOM in sitcom History.
