View Full Version : When have you wasted money?

Ten years ago, my husband's son was getting married. I got the idea in my head that my husband and I should take dance lessons, so we'd look great dancing at the wedding. I signed us up for a course at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. It cost $800. The lessons were fun, but we learned dances we've never had any use for like the tango, waltz, foxtrot...ballroom dancing basically. I should have just signed on for a basic lesson for an elegant slow dance with that cool dip, lol.

Not quite a total waste of money. Although we don't remember a thing from our lessons, we had fun learning. It was in this trendy part of Boston (Newbury Street), and we would go for nice dinners afterwards.

On a much smaller scale, I ordered Chinese food from a flyer that I got in the mail. They delivered, so I figured we'd try it. It was so greasy and horrible, we had to throw the entire order out.

I've got a lot of wasted money hanging in my closet in the form of clothes I've bought and have never worn.

Years ago, I bought my husband one of those exercise rowers. I paid over $400 for it. He used it maybe twice, and I ended up giving it away years later.

I bought a sofa many years ago that was so uncomfortable that I ended up giving it away. I think I paid about 8 or 9 hundred for it.

-Ice Princess soundtrack (bought it for one song)
-Magazines because some celebrity I liked was featured. I've since thrown all of those out.
-Beanie Babies. I wish I could do something with them. They're just sitting under my bed.

I'm a huge shopping addict, so I waste money constantly on stuff I don't need or use.

When I bought my car. I didn't realize insurance on it would be a killer.

Any time I've ever eaten fast food.

Going to see "Jurassic Park 3"

I don't play my electric guitar nearly as often as I should for how much I spent on it.

Come on Fleet. Everybody has buyer's remorse at least once in their lifetime...a book they hated, a new kind of chocolate, something. ;)

Nope, I'm telling you, Virgos don't have those flaws. We are kind of like Mr. Spock! :)

Okay... maybe once or twice I bought a new kind of chocolate I didn't like (I can't remember when that happened, though).

But I look through books before I buy them. ;)

and then theres the whole "free" magazine I had to pay 2 dollars for (for shipping). I had plenty of reason to think I could just send this guy two dollars in the mail and not have to worry about it. He was the leader of the Diana DeGarmo fan club thingy so I trusted him. Regardless, I certainly never got a magazine in the mail and to this very day I keep thinking about the two dollars I wasted. :grr: pissed:

 Its true b's, he still bitches about it to me! -.-

I also waste money on clothes and food and other stupid things. See, my problem is I feel guilty on things like I DO need [clothes], but when it comes to tickets, theres really no price on it. I dont impulse buy as much as I used to, so I am getting better. I just HATE saving. If I have money, I have to spend it. I hate it, but it just digs into me and then I go off and buy something. Ill buy a pack of gum just to satisfy the need to buy.

I am very careful about how I spend my money and have been since I started earning my own money when I was 12. But I have wasted money on clothes in the past so to make up for it I haven't bought any new clothes so far this year. I was also suckered into spending 800 bucks on a Fitness USA membership about 10 years ago which I never use anymore. It is a lifetime membership though so it wasn't a total waste. I will go back one of these days, perhaps after I have the baby.

-Paying $600 for a cell phone. :o
-Taking chances on some movies by purchasing them.
-Applying to some schools I didn't even want to go to. (each app- $55-$65)

Oh, every time I buy something...

I'll see something at the grocery store that I think looks good, so I'll buy it, it tastes like ****, and I end up just throwing it away. I recently bought some Nestle Strawberry-flavored water like that. NASTY.

Restaurant food. The portions are always too big, so I take half home, and then never eat it.

I've wasted a lot of money on gas by aimlessly driving places for no reason.

Or money spent while wasted?!
 Good play on words. Money I wasted while wasted. I think there's a country song in there somewhere.

During the summer of 1995 I had a major crush on this girl named Jenny that I worked with at Target. She worked at the jewelry counter. Every night after the store closed I would quickly find something to buy so that I would have an reason to go up to the jewelry counter and have Jenny ring me up. One time I even bought a cow shaped crockpot on clearance just so I would have something for Jenny to ring up for me. The very next day I found out she had a boyfriend. :(

- Buying a million copies of one magazine because of the person featured on it (I have so many now, I don't know what to do with them)
- Applying to ELEVEN colleges last year, when I only liked 5 of them
- My Prom Dress (I ended up buying it at the very last minute, a week before the dance, and since I'm so short, I needed it altered- we ended up having to pay a rush fee and everything. But, I have worn the dress more than once, so I guess it was worth it)
- Gas...it's always such fun putting $40 worth of gas into the car, only to see a quarter of it is gone in less than two hours.

I always used to blindly buy CDs and end up hating the band or only liking one of their songs. Now I REALLY want CDs, but I'm completely broke besides my $50 in change which I am saving to buy a TVDVD that is coming out next month. I need a job or something. And I really need new clothes for school.

I went to the mall today to buy TWO things and it ended up being $35!! It was appalling, especially since I could have easily waited for one of the things - or just borrowed it from a friend.

-Countless CDs that I never listen to anymore
-A book that I got like a year ago and have yet to read

They suckered you, didn't they? Yup. That's their job.

Fast food is a huge waste of money. "Don't feel like cooking. Lets eat out! Yeah! Good idea!...." Three hours later: "That was probably a bad idea!"

Yeah. Well. We'll likely do it again.

Books I've brought in the last two years. I keep thinking, "Oh, I'll get around to that eventually!"

Not.

I have an assload of books I've brought in the last 2 years I haven't even started or finished. I even have a book I brought when I was in the UK almost 1.5 years ago (March 2004) that I haven't even reached page 30 of yet. :grr:

Going out to dinner always seems to be more expensive than you thought, and a lot of the time not worth it.

$35 - $50 here and there adds up.

And dropping $60 - $100 (a couple) for a few hours out is really not worth it.

Yet I continue to do it.

paying for concert tickets and not staying for the whole show.

Buying stuff on ebay I don't use or need.

Paying for a Health club membership I did not go like I should have.

I am more of a saver then a spender but I would say

-Sims vacation expansion pack, Sims 2 had just came out and I clearly wasn't going to use an expansion pack for Sims 1

-Buying a lot of stuffed animals and then just stuffing them in a box

I don't waste money anymore today, but here are exceptions:

1. Computer games that blew Atari away: In the late 1980s I bought a bunch of games on 5.25-inch disks (remember those?) for the family PC (personal computer). Many of them were in the $35 neighborhood. I never play them anymore. That wasn't the only software I got, I also got Print Shop and Print Shop Companion by Broderbund (remember that?). Then around 1990 came the Print Shop Graphics Library Sampler Edition, School and Business Edition, and Party Edition, none of which I ever recall using. Look at what games you can find online today (think games.msn.com!).

2. Cassette tapes: I never got into CDs, but for a while I was collecting cassette tapes of my favorite bands. Only once in a blue moon will I listen to them nowadays. Today I depend on the luck of the radio, so full of surprises.
