I never really watched this show. It wasn't a case of liking or disliking it, I just never really took the time to watch it, though I am aware of its history with Valerie Harper.

Anyway, if this series were to be issued on DVD would the first two seasons be under the title of The Hogan Family or would they be issued under their original titles as Valerie and Valerie's Family?

I'm guessing that if the shows went into syndication as The Hogan Family, the DVDs might follow suit. But as I never really watched this show first-run or in syndication, so I'm at a loss.

If anyone can shed any light on this, it would be appreciated.

I think someday if Valerie / Valerie's Family / The Hogan Family is released on DVD I think seasons 1 & 2 would be under the title Valerie or Valerie's Family. For seasons 3 - 5 most likely it would be under the title The Hogan Family.

If anyone wants this show released on DVD, go to www.tvshowsondvd.com and register (if you haven't already done so) and vote for both Valerie and The Hogan Family (in case the studios count the shows as 2 separate shows) to be released. It costs nothing to register and there's no risk.

I agree. The point with DVD releases, at least most of them anyway, is to release episodes in their entirety without any EDITS. Tacking on the title The Hogan Family during the Valerie years (which, incidentally, were Seasons 1 & 2; Season 1 had only 10 episodes since the show debuted as a mid-season replacement) would be an edit of sorts. Besides, I think it should retain its original opening credits.

Also of note, Season 3 went by the title of Valerie's Family. This was Sandy's first season on the show and the show's producers (along with NBC) wanted its audience to make sure they knew what show it was that fans were tuning in to. Since all of the general public knew the show as Valerie, they thought it wise to retain her name so fans would be able to identify it. Valerie Harper agreed to let the show use her name for that one year when the show agreed to settle the court case (that both parties had against each other) one year later. Valerie wanted it to be dealt with as soon as possible since she reasoned that the longer it took to settle the thing, the more the public would be used to looking at her as the villain in the whole mess. She figured settle the court case early so she could win and get her reputation back.

For Season 4, the show figured that the public knew enough about the behind-the-scenes debacle with Valerie Harper that a name change was safe to do at this point. Also, legally, they were obligated to change it. This time, the word Valerie was left out altogether and the word Family was retained. Since The Hogans had appeared as a sub-title during its Season 3 Valerie's Family run, the show simply melded both Family and the sub-title to form... what else?... The Hogan Family.

Sorry for the long explanation, but I thought it might be of use to some of the people here...
