"Mod" was asking about the first Carol and why the actress who played her was not retained for the series. I've wondered about that myself, though I still like Adrienne Barbeau. But I have another question. John Amos appeared in a handful of "Maude" episodes playing Florida's husband, Henry Evans. When Florida was spun off to her own show, "Good Times," John Amos continued to play her husband, but all of a sudden his name was James, not Henry. Does anyone know why they changed his character's name?

Last night, I watched the first and only season 1 episode he was in. I was curious myself. I guess the producers just wanted to change his name......? I'm not sure if there's a real reason behind this. Anyone know anything about this?

I never found out why his name was changed, but that was always one of the reseasons that it was hhard for me to connect Good Times to Maude because of the inconsistency of John amos character name

A simple name change does not completely disconnect everything. GT still maintained the Henry name.

Well until I found out why his name was changed, it will always be a disconnect for me

Somehow, I don't think it'll matter to you why they changed his name. lol

I don't know why they changed his name. But they not only changed his name, they changed his profession and where they lived.
I think Good Times was not the typical spinoff. It took just a character from Maude and built a sitcom around her instead of having any connection back to Maude.
Another example was The Jeffersons. We never really heard anything about Archie and Edith during The Jeffersons. However, we did here about Archie and Edith on Maude.

You are correct, Bullet.
To say that "Good Times" was a spin-off of "Maude" isn't really acurate. Aside from the examples you listed above, not only was there never any mention of Florida ever being Maude's maid, but it seemed as if James (Henry) and Florida had never lived in NY. Apparently, the Evans family had lived in Chicago all along.

The name "Henry" ended up being the name for James Evans father on Good Times.

Not that weird to me because James father still had nothing to do with the ti-in between Good Times and Maude-lol

I realize that BUT of all the names to give James' father, they give him the name HENRY, the name of John Amos' character on Maude.

the father could have been Henry John Evans, The son, James Henry Evans, the grandson James Henry Evans, Jr.

I was thinking the same exact thing. :p James Henry Evans is the name that I was thinking of. But I guess that we will never know. However, I have enough proof from what I have seen to know that this show is a spinoff. Some tend to think that a spinoff has a set if rules that must be followed. Not always the case. "Empty Nest", the "Golden Girls" Spinoff is a prime example. It has been about five years since this Debate started on this board. Here are some of the top Sitcoms On Line moments:
April 2000: Sitcoms On Line got its first message board harrasser/imposter named Melvin Turner who tried to mess with our beloved administrator TJ through phony posts.
October 2000: The Facts of Life Message Board became the hottest board on this site. Many tensions rose if one did not agree with another about the show. Many heated arguments arose if you said something inconsistent.
March 2001: TJ, ThomasE, Pavandal and many other S.O.L. members get together on a live chat to celebrate and discuss Nick At Nite's "Revenge of the 80's" week that consisted of a lineup programs from the 80's throughout the entire week.
May 2001: Another imposter using the online name "Cute N Country" joined the boards claiming to be Lisa Welchel (Blair Warner) from "The Facts of Life" and started a commotion about the soon to be reunion movie.
November 2001: An online ruckus is started by some poster that was obsessed with Dixie Carter while provoking anger out of other members. ThomasE is given the "moderator" title on the "Different Strokes" board to help bring order back.
May 2003: The whole Good Times spinoff argument was started by Solomon D.
December 2004: The Moderator's Lounge board is added for moderators to discuss important issue on the foreber expanding Sitcoms on Line board.
October 2005: Producer/Writer Marc Sotkin(Golden Girls/Palace, Empty Nest, Charles In Charge, etc.) becomes a sitcoms on line member.
May 2006: Video Proof is given from an interview with Norman Lear from year 2000 in which he states that "Good Times" is a spinoff from "Maude" although he claimed hating to use that word.
July 2007: The well known online member Solomon D. is given his own column entitled "Solomon's weekly rant".
April 2008: Solomon D. decides to discontinue his weekly rant stating that he wants to "finish out on top".
There you have it folks!

note, my dear, I said--"could have been" :)
There are a lot of people who end up using their middle name as the name they choose to go by.

Sounds like me. ;) I went by my middle name ever since I was in Kindergarten. I had been in private school up until 8th grade. I changed it to my first name when I went to public high school. I was rebelling and needed a make-over.
I was just making conversation abt the coincidence regarding the name Henry. I admit, I am one of the few who believes GT is not a spin-off. I go by the fact that the producer who created the original GT says GT was not really a spin-off. It became a spin-off after Lear became involved. I also have a book authored by someone who was a member here and he interviewed Lear who states, GT is not a spin-off. So, whether Lear was drinking or something, he might just say whatever suits the situation at the time.
