The last episode wasn't written to wrap up any storylines. Instead, it focused on Carmine going to New York to try his luck on Broadway, and looked like a pilot for a potential spinoff for Eddie Mekka. Penny Marshall only made a brief appearance and, of course, Cindy Williams wasn't there.

I liked the last eppie...some of of it! My favorite part was when Laverne got off the phone in the middle of the night with C Carmine and and she turns over in her homemade waterbed! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/rotflmao.gif (with she made from a air matress and a kiddy pool!) It would have been nice if Cindy had stuck around for Season 8, but the entire cast was pretty ready to move on at that time. Unfortunately, the fans suffered since we never got any closure and the last seasons episodes had to be re-written and reworked to be only-Laverne stories or stories revolving around the supporting cast. From a show that started out so strong, it was a shame to see it fizzle away into nothingness at the end. I almost wished they had ended it a year earlier so they could have ended it with a purpose.

Laverne needed someone like Shirley to play off of, they should have replaced Shirley.

Yes, if Laverne had another partner it would have been a more graceful end for the show. I dread when the openers come on for the Laverne-only episodes, the title still shows "& Shirley" but you only see Laverne in the shots.
