Moderate Quake Shakes Southern California
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A moderate-strength earthquake struck Southern California on Thursday, shaking a wide area from Los Angeles to San Diego and counties to the east. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The 1:53 p.m. quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 and was centered near Yucaipa in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, according to the automated seismic network operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and other institutions.
It was the third significant quake to hit California since Sunday, when a magnitude-5.2 quake shook Riverside County. A magnitude-7.0 quake struck Tuesday night 90 miles off Northern California.
The Los Angeles Fire Department had received no reports of significant damage, spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

I did feel this one- just a little. I'm surprised that I felt it at all. Yucaipa is at least 100 miles away from where I live.

It's not long before California becomes an island.

Indeed. I was thinking that there seems to be an increased amount of seismic activity around California. Perhaps that's simply because more people are reporting it here.
In any case, one day, California as we know it will be gone. I hope the United States doesn't have to suffer such a calamity in this age of multi-threats.

They just said on the news that the reason it was felt so for such a large radius was because it was 8 miles below the surface.

Hmmm. I might need to invest in some land in Nevada. Could be prime oceanfront property soon. :D
(Just kidding)

Yeah, you're right... in about 5 or 6 million years.

That's a blink in the eye, considering the Earth's been around for 4 billion years.

Yes, considering that the earth is 4.5 billion years old, 4 or 5 million is very little time. But it doesn't really matter because you and I will be gone long before that portion of California becomes an island.

Yes. Very unfortunate. It would be some fun to watch that happen!

and you didn't feel Sunday's quake?
Interesting. It was only a few miles farther south and actually(based on the revised magnitude) was a little stronger(5.2 vs. 4.9 today).

Yes, I felt Sunday's. For some reason, I felt today's just a slight amount more.
The one on Sunday (Anza-Borrego) was a little farther away.
Luckily, by the time the shock waves of both quakes reached where I am, they were weak.
