We'll know for sure in about 36 hours...(not that I'm doubting the report).
When it's announced at upfronts, or via other official channels, or in a reputable publication, I'll believe. It's nothing personal - it really isn't. It's just most forum members have gotten burned in the past on reports from "a friend", and that breeds a certain caution about these things.

You should think about moving out of your parent's house and then think again about posting things you were "told". Oh man, was that mean?
I don't care.

What?! I never followed the show or have posted on this board, but am a fan of John Ritter's and this surprises me! I thought the show was doing well. Had there been cancellation rumors?

I guess we'll know for sure when either Pavan tells us, or we here it from an official publication, but no one can be surprised by this if it is true. I have suspected this for a long time. It is unbelievable that this network could not even give it a fourth year for syndication. Especially when it renewed Hope and Faith and the lower rated Jake in Progress of all shows. What a joke.

Yes, virtually every TV critic/writer had the show canceled for the past couple of weeks or month. A lot of people here thought they were wrong, but apparently not.

It's been "on the bubble" for a couple of months now. I went from "defintely coming back" to midseason to now I don't think so in just a few days. We'll know Tuesday.

Exactly, keywords are "for the fall." It is very possible we can see a mid-season birth.

Well this is the most unbelievable thing I have seen yet. Get this from the Hollywood Reporter :
May 16, 2005
ABC, WB, Fox finalize pickups
ABC appears poised to make some major scheduling moves next season now
that network brass have picked up a slew of new comedy and drama series. The
network also has renewed a handful of shows that were thought to be on the
fence, including comedies "Jake in Progress," "Less Than Perfect" and
"Rodney" and unscripted hours "Wife Swap" and "Supernanny," sources said.
The WB Network, which like ABC is set to reveal its 2005-06 season lineup to
advertisers Tuesday in New York, was said to have firmed up most of its
pickups during the weekend, as did Fox, which presents Thursday. For the WB,
however, sources said that negotiations between the network and 20th Century
Fox TV for the renewal of 20th-produced "Reba," the WB's top-rated comedy,
hit a rough patch late Friday that in turn complicated the WB's pickup
discussions for the high-profile, 20th-produced pilots "Pepper Dennis,"
starring Rebecca Romijn, and "Misconception," starring Jane Leeves. (Nellie
Andreeva and Cynthia Littleton)
You mean to tell me they are picking up Rodney and Less Than Perfect and no 8 Simple Rules. This has to be a joke. Could someone explain to me how this can possibly be true ?

I don't think that will happen, but with as stunned as I am now I guess anything is possible. I hate to keep using this word "stunned", but I just don't know what else to say.
It is almost like I am sitting here thinking I had a dream that Rodney, Jake, and LTP were renewed and 8SR was canceled. I just cannot believe that happend.

The Bachelor was just renewed for mid-season. Wife Swap and Supernanny will be back in some form. Less Than Perfect, Jake in Progress, Rodney, Hope & Faith, According to Jim, and George Lopez are the returning sitcoms. Complete Savages, My Wife & Kids, 8 Simple Rules, Eyes, Blind Justice seem to not be coming back.
Still no rough schedule, w/o that, it is tough to say still.

Thanks for the encouragement. Right now I think I am actually more upset over them renewing LTP and Rodney over 8SR than them canceling 8SR. I could have accepted it if they all got canceled. But two shows that I don't think any way should have gotten renewed over 8SR makes the cancelation much more difficult to take.

No, the show is not a midseason replacement it is just cancelled. This is the most shocking stunning thing I have seen on TV yet. To renew Less Than Perfect that can't even hold the meager ratings from Hope and Faith, and cancel 8 Simple Rules that has better ratings, especially considering the 8:00 vs. 9:30 time slot is appalling. Look here is the season's ratings, you tell me which show should have been renewed :
89 8 SIMPLE RULES 7110 2.6 19
90 PRIMETIME LIVE 6970 2.5 21
91 COMMITTED 6960 2.5 9
92 O.C. 6950 2.5 17
93 WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY 6890 2.5 6
94 MOST OUTRAG MOMTS LIVE TV 6830 2.5 3
95 DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES-SAT 6750 2.4 8
96 THAT ‘70S SHOW 6730 2.4 17

I guess you could call it unofficial until tommorrow. However, it is being reported in lots of reputable source places so I am sure it is true.
If you want to get it off your chest you can write these two clowns. They are the ones responsible for canceling 8SR, while renewing LTP. I know it will not bring 8SR, back it is therapeutic to get it off your chest. I know I sent them a nasty note :

Just a thought, but couldn't it be possible that there was a conflict within the cast/crew? What if Katey/Amy/Martin/Kaley wanted more money? David Spade and Jim could easily be written off, but you can't lose one of those 4 and expect to go on. Especially Kaley and Amy as I am sure there are some people who watch just for them.
They don't seem to be the moneygrubbing type though. However, maybe they just didn't want to do it any more? Heck, Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson were offered HUGE contracts to do another season of Home Improvement, but Tim just didn't want to do it anymore. Since clearly they couldn't replace the ToolMan, they ended the show.
IMO, that's the only way to explain why they'd cancel 8SR, but keep Rodney, Jake, and Less than Perfect.

Someone suggested that maybe Jim and Katey were getting paid too much money that could be a reason why. I could see Jim Garner making some seroius coin, and Katey as well
Raisingdad2004
05-16-2005, 04:17 PM
I don't think it could be cast problems, Garner and Spade would not be a problem if maybe they did not want to go on. Sagal and Cuoco have both talked about hoping the show is renewed and I don't think if Kaley had decided this season to pursue over things it wouldn't have been a big deal since allot of shows usually write the kids off to college and they hardly appear.
I know Pillot and Peaslee were only signed for 1 season with an option for a 4th, but if they had not wanted to continue I am sure they would just find new producers again.

ABC lineup heavy on comedies:
The network is set to reveal its 2005-06 season lineup to advertisers Tuesday in New York. Gone from the schedule are Damon Wayans' "My Wife & Kids," "8 Simple Rules," "Complete Savages" and two short-lived midseason dramas: "Blind Justice" and "Eyes."

My feeling is something had to happen that made ABC pass on 8SR, and turn to Less Than Perfect. What it was that changed their mind we will probably never know.
If you look at the past season 8SR always had a higher standing with the network than LTP. 8SR drew an average of 600,000 more viewers than LTP in a worse time slot. The network always ran much more promos for 8SR, and almost none for LTP. It also ordered two extra episodes of 8SR for a total of 24, while LTP only had 22. They also preempted LTP a few times when 8SR and Hope and Faith both aired on a given Friday. They also gave 8SR that extra half hour when Savages failed. I always felt like ABC liked 8SR, but I also always thought they would cut back on sitcoms for next season, and 8SR would get caught in the squeeze. With ABC renewing all these sitcoms and adding others this obviously was not the case.
In fact, LTP only has about 70 episodes through 3 seasons, while 8SR had 76. So LTP still needs more episodes than 8SR needed for syndication. If you look at all those things I really believe the network would have chose 8SR over LTP. That is why this whole thing is so shocking. I really believe something happend to change their thinking. Whether it was a cast member or a producer or something, I really believe something changed here that brought LTP back from the dead, and ultimately buried 8SR. What it was we will probably never know.

Hello everyone!
First, let me say that I love the board. Even though this is my first time posting, I have been visiting and reading your comments over the past couple of years. I like 8 Simple Rules, and I would love to see the show continue. For me personally, I think moving the show to Fridays really hurt it. Fridays everyone (including myself) are going out, and many people aren't home watching TV. I think the show would do better during the week, but that's just my opinion.
I really hope all this "speculation" isn't true about 8SR being canceled, because I like it a lot better than Less Than Perfect. I just find it hard to believe that all these orginaizations would be telling us it is canceled if it really isn't, you know? But I guess we will find out later this morning what the story is. I'm praying for a miracle that 8SR is not canceled, but it looks like it probably is.

Um, What about the fact that the ratings haven't been the same since John Ritter died. What does it take to figure that one out here people? This isn't rocket science you know. People stopped watching after his character died, plain and simple. Not because of money, not because the actors wanted more money,(someone else on this board stated that, which sounds ridiclous), it's because of the RATINGS. Ratings are what matters here.. I'm surprised that the show lasted this long without him. Most shows,(generally speaking), when they lose a star (through death), usually the show gets canceled right away. Same thing happene to 'Sanford And Son'. Red Fox died, and after a few episodes, they caneled the show.

UPFRONT WEEK CONTINUES...: If Jennifer Garner's rumored pregnancy doesn't derail the fifth season of Alias, this certainly will: ABC is shifting the spy thriller to Thursdays at 8 pm. The resurgent network is also moving Lost back an hour, to Wednesdays at 9 pm. It's all part of an aggressive new fall schedule that features six new dramas and five new comedies. The new shows include the alien conspiracy thriller Invasion, comedies starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Fred Savage and Heather Graham, and Commander in Chief, featuring Geena Davis as the first female president. Gone are My Wife & Kids, 8 Simple Rules, Complete Savages, Blind Justice and Eyes. And in a head-scratcher of a decision, the net has opted not to euthanize The Bachelor; the ailing franchise will return at midseason after Monday Night Football wraps. So, let me get this straight: Eyes is dead but The Bachelor is alive and kicking? OK, just checking.

It can still go into syndication, heck "Two Guys and Girl" has about 74 episodes and has been in syndication for awhile, same with other shows as well :)
So there's always the possiblity, I have a feeling some network might want to air it for the John Ritter episodes alone :)
